Henry Ford Community College offers a program for those with an interest in combining art and design into a career in the exciting field of interior design. HFCC offers a two-year, 67-71 credit-hour associate degree program in Interior Design. Interior design draws upon many disciplines to enhance and support the function, safety, and aesthetics of interior spaces. Interior designers blend and balance colors, textures, furniture, lighting, and space into an aesthetically pleasing harmony to meet the needs of residential and commercial clients. Professional interior designers plan interior spaces of almost every type of building, including offices, airport terminals, theaters, shopping malls, restaurants, hotels, schools, hospitals, and private residences. Today, more and more interior designers are involved in building projects from the very beginning, collaborating with architects, electricians and building contractors to ensure that designs are safe and meet construction requirements. An increasing number of designers are involved in architectural detailing, such as crown molding and built-in bookshelves, and in planning layouts of buildings undergoing renovation, including helping to determine the location of windows, stairways, escalators, and walkways. Interior designers must be able to analyze blueprints, understand building and fire codes, and have the knowledge to make space accessible to people with disabilities. Interior DesignASSOCIATE IN ARTS DEGREE PROGRAMHenry Ford Community College’s associate degree program in Interior Design is for individuals interested in combining the creativity of art and the practicality of design into exciting, rewarding careers in residential or commercial design, retail home furnishing business or facility management.

HFCC’s Interior Design program incorporates fine arts and architectural courses into the curriculum. This enables students to develop the analytical, systematic, artistic and business expertise necessary for creating aesthetically pleasing, yet practical spaces for living and working. Upon graduation, students are able to transfer their HFCC credits to CIDA-accredited four-year universities to pursue bachelor degree programs, or seek entry-level employment related to interior design.

Exclusive to HFCC Interior Design students is a new, state-of-the-art design studio located on the second floor of the MacKenzie Fine Arts Center. The studio contains workstations with the latest computer equipment and software used by interior design professionals, as well as a design resource library.

"When I first transferred to Eastern Michigan University, I was afraid they would have me retake classes I took at HFCC. In fact, EMU accepted the majority of my classes. Everyone in my class is amazed at my work, including the faculty. I could not have gotten this far without the design program at HFCC. Thank you HFCC!"

Belques Alemad 2010 Graduate

"My education at HFCC gave me the confidence to open my own interior design studio, Lee Custom Interiors. The program's comprehensive and practical knowledge, particularly in the professional practice class and design studios, prepared me to handle any situation that may arise in my business."

Michelle Phillips-Baker 2011 Graduate

"“HFCC prepared me for a real-world interior design career in an upscale, full-service retail furniture store. Upon graduation, I had developed the ability to determine a client’s needs and wants, especially space planning and conceptual design. The interior design program at HFCC gave me the confidence and skill level required to be a professional interior designer."

Tina Rossi 2010 Graduate

“When I decided to return to school, I had been a space planner for 11 years. My particular job only dealt with the 2-D aspect of design. The transition to the HFCC interior design program was painless and my studies quickly had me thinking in 3-D. I also started thinking how the space would look aesthetically – some-thing I avoided but now look forward to after going to HFCC.”

Jo-Anne Donfried 2011 Graduate
