TREATING YOUR DIABETES
If you have type 2 diabetes, it may be changing over time and your medication may need to change with it. This doesn’t mean you have not been doing everything right. It’s just the way diabetes is. And while you can’t always control these changes, you can control the next step you take.
“INTENSIVE,” OR “BASAL-BOLUS,” INSULIN THERAPY
In people who do not have diabetes, the body makes low levels of insulin throughout the day. When blood sugar goes up, or “spikes,” such as after a meal, the body reacts by releasing more insulin.
To mimic the body’s natural insulin patterns, some people with diabetes use “intensive,” or “basal-bolus,” insulin therapy. This means taking:
• A long-acting, or “basal,” insulin once or twice daily to help control blood sugar between meals and when you sleep, and
• A “bolus,” or fast-acting, insulin to help control blood sugar spikes that happen at mealtime
If you have diabetes, you may be able to use an insulin pump, which you and your health care provider can program to deliver insulin doses throughout the day and at mealtime.

WHAT IS DIABETES?When you eat, some of your food is broken down into sugar (also called “glucose”). Sugar travels in your blood to all your body’s cells, where it is needed for energy. A hormone called insulin helps sugar move from your blood into your cells. When you have diabetes
• Your pancreas makes little or no insulin, or
• Your body prevents the insulin you do make from working right
As a result, sugar can’t get into your cells, so it stays in your blood. That’s why your blood sugar gets too high.
There are 2 main types of diabetes
Type 1 diabetes• Formerly known as
juvenile diabetes, it’s usually diagnosed in children and young adults
• Only 5% to 10% of people with diabetes have type 1
• The body produces very little to no insulin at all
Type 2 diabetes• Usually diagnosed
in adults• 90% to 95% of people
with diabetes have type 2• The body doesn’t make
enough insulin or can’t use its own insulin to control blood sugar

Did you know?After you eat, your blood sugar can be higher than normal for 4 hours (and up to 6 hours). Eating 3 meals a day means your blood sugar could be higher than normal for up to 12 hours, or 50% of your day. NovoLog® helps control blood sugar spikes when you eat.
NovoLog® can provide 50% to 70% of your required daily insulin when taken with long-acting insulin and 100% if you’re using an insulin pump.

Analog insulinInsulin is a hormone in your body that helps control blood sugar. People with type 2 diabetes don’t make enough insulin or can’t use their own insulin to control blood sugar. People with type 1 diabetes make little or no insulin. NovoLog® is an analog insulin, a type of insulin designed to closely mimic the body’s own insulin.
Low rate of low blood sugarIn a study of patients with type 1 diabetes, people taking NovoLog® had fewer nighttime low blood sugar episodes than people taking regular human insulin. It is important to note that low blood sugar is a common side effect of all insulins, including NovoLog®.
Adjustable dosingNovoLog® stays in step with your activities and mealtimes. You and your health care provider can adjust your NovoLog® dose to your eating, activity, and blood sugar reading. You can also adjust your NovoLog® dose for high or low blood sugar. If you need some help on how to dose, ask your health care provider if the NovoLog® Dosing Tool might be right for you.

Why do I need 2 types of insulin? Basal: You may take a long-acting, or “basal,” insulin at night or in the morning (sometimes both) to help control blood sugar between meals and when you sleep.
Bolus: NovoLog® is a fast-acting, or “bolus,” insulin. It helps control your blood sugar spikes when you eat.
Basal-Bolus: Combines basal insulin and NovoLog®. This therapy closely mimics the way your body’s natural insulin works throughout the day.
I’m already taking insulin once or twice a day to help manage my type 2 diabetes.Why add NovoLog®?See “Why do I need 2 types of insulin?” above and remember that type 2 diabetes changes over time, making it harder to control blood sugar spikes when you eat. When should I test my blood sugar when taking NovoLog®? You and your diabetes care team will decide when and how often to check your blood sugar. Here are some times when you may want to check:
• When you wake up (this is called “fasting plasma glucose” or “FPG”)
• Before meals or large snacks
• 1 to 2 hours after meals (this is called “postprandial plasma glucose” or “PPG”)
• Before and within minutes after physical activity
The American Diabetes Association (ADA) recommends certain blood sugar goals for adults with diabetes. You can see these listed on the chart on the left.

NovoLog® affects you.
• Do not drink alcohol or use medicines that contain alcohol.
What are the possible side effects of NovoLog®?Serious side effects can lead to death, including:Low blood sugar. Some signs and symptoms include:
• anxiety, irritability, mood changes, dizziness, sweating, confusion, and headache.

What is A1C and why is it important?A1C measures your estimated blood sugar over the past 2 to 3 months. It is made up of FPG and PPG. You must control both to reach your A1C goal. Taking NovoLog® at mealtime helps control PPG.
Use these guidelines from the American Diabetes Association (ADA) to help see if you’re on the right track. Your health care provider will set goals individualized to you.
Using a blood sugar diary will tell you:
• If your insulin or other diabetes medicine is working
• How physical activity and the foods you eat affect your blood sugar

NovoLog® FlexPen®
NovoLog® FlexPen® comes prefilled with 300 units of insulin and lasts up to 28 days without refrigeration after first use, so it can be taken almost anywhere. Once in use, NovoLog® FlexPen® must be kept at room temperature below 86°F for up to 28 days.
NovoLog® FlexPen® can be used with NovoFine® needlesNovoLog® FlexPen® uses NovoFine® Plus 32G Tip needles, which are the shortest and thinnest needles available from Novo Nordisk. NovoFine® Plus is designed to make injections more comfortable for you.

Insulin pumpsMany people with type 1 diabetes use an insulin pump. An insulin pump is a small, battery-operated device. Pumps can be programmed to deliver:
• Constant “basal” doses of NovoLog® throughout the day, and
• “Bolus” doses when you eat
NovoLog® has been shown to be safe and effective for use in insulin pumps in children age 2 and older with type 1 diabetes and adults with diabetes. If you use an insulin pump, it’s a good idea to have a backup source for insulin. Ask your health care provider about NovoLog® FlexPen®—or NovoPen Echo®—as an option.
If you are using a pump, here’s how often to change NovoLog®:
NovoLog® remains heat-stable in pumps at normal body temperature (up to 98.6°F).
