About a year and a half ago, many of you took a survey at the beginning of the pastoral search process which was part of the congregation’s self-study and self-assessment. Five priorities emerged from that survey.

The first was “stronger worship services.” I’ve given that phrase a lot of thought and prayer. I’ve been asking: What does it mean to have “stronger worship services?” What steps can we take to strengthen our worship life? There are, no doubt, many things we can do to strengthen our worship life and we’ll be in conversation about those things in the coming year. I believe that one of the first, and most important, steps we can take is to celebrate Holy Communion at both services every week beginning this Memorial Day weekend. There are good reasons to make the change now and over the coming weeks and months I’ll be spelling out those reasons in a variety of forums. They will be opportunities to address the question: “Why weekly Communion?”

Another high priority that emerged from the survey was “greater financial generosity.” As you may know we entered 2016 with an anticipated deficit of$37,000. The budget that was adopted in January 2016 was for expenses of $455,117 with anticipated contributions of $418,050. So I am delighted to share the news—if you haven’t already heard—that we ended the year with a surplus of over $15,000. Our contributions came in at $454,965 and our expenses came in at $439,228. So thank you to everyone who contributed in this past year. Thank you for your generosity. And more than that, thanks be to God for inspiring us to grow in our generosity!

SUNDAYS, 9:30-10:30,

Room 102

Starting February 5, we will be

studying the book of Jonah.

WOMEN’S BIBLE STUDY

February 14, 10:00 am.

The Women's Bible Study

continues to study the topic of the

cross as the end of "sacred

violence." We will study the

gospels to see how Jesus

overturned and undermined the

idea that God is a violent God and

needs sacrificial scapegoats to be

satisfied. Instead, Jesus offers us

a vision of God as a peaceable God

who does not desire sacrifice but

becomes the sacrifice himself on

the cross. So come and join us as

we seek to walk in the way of

peace.

MARCH HOT TOPICS

CHILDREN, YOUTH & FAMILY NEWS

LOC Sunday School Family Service Project

On February 26th during Sunday School hour, bring the whole family to cut and tie fleece blankets. Monetary and fleece donations are needed. Look for the fleece blanket with donation tags in the Narthex. Blankets go to campers who attend Camp Noah, an organization that brings hope and healing to communities affected by disaster. Save the date for this fun event!

LOC goes to Camp! On February 12th, Mandy Severtson from Green Lake Lutheran Ministries will be here to talk about our summer camp opportunities for our youth! She will share about the different types of camp available for all ages, the registration process, the costs and camper scholarships, and answer any other questions you may have! There is a camp for everybody, including a special Confirmation camp for all 6th graders, and a Service/Adventure week for Confirmation kids.
