Clinical Research From the UW

Dr. Huang will describe some of the recent research projects that have been conducted at the UW. They include studies on scanning, aligners, vibration devices, anterior openbite, white spot lesions, and condylar position after orthodontic treatment. Find out how our Department is adding to the body of orthodontic evidence, and how this evidence impacts your daily practice.

Dr. David L. Turpin is editor emeritus of the American Journal of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics (AJO-DO). He served as the editor-in-chief of the AJO-DO from 1999 to 2010 and as the interim editor-in-chief from 2013 to 2014. With designation as an orthodontic specialist, we have inherited the need to know how to acquire, evaluate and disseminate scientific facts. In this presentation, I will describe a few of the newest clinical procedures and how we can begin to evaluate their effectiveness. Do you have access to the evidence needed to assure your next patient they are really benefiting from the latest technological finding? Or is it more mythical than scientific? While much of the information mentioned will be familiar to our recently trained orthodontists, those of us graduating more than 15 years ago have witnessed a real revolution in producing, accessing, and utilizing orthodontic literature. Evidence-based methods are an enormous improvement in allowing us to obtain information in a quick and efficient manner.

Dr. Chris Riolo received his Doctorate of Dental Surgery from the University of Michigan. He received his Specialty Certificate and Masters in Orthodontics at the University of Detroit Mercy and subsequently completed a PhD in Epidemiology from the School of Public Health at the university of Michigan. Dr. Riolo is a diplomate of the American Board of Orthodontics, maintains a private practice in Seattle, WA specializing in adult esthetic orthodontics and is an affiliate assistant professor at the University of Washington.

Lingual Orthodontics: An Essential Tool for the Orthodontic Specialist

Understanding the unique challenges of lingual orthodontic mechanics as well as

the strengths and weaknesses of the particular lingual orthodontic appliance system

employed is critical to achieving an excellent orthodontic result. The first, second

and third order biomechanical difficulties are described, the evolution of lingual

appliance systems to deal with these problems are also presented so that the

orthodontic practitioner has an understanding of the strengths and weaknesses

of various lingual systems. An understanding of these issues allows the orthodontist

to produce excellent orthodontic treatment outcomes that are in many cases superior

to those achieved with conventional buccal orthodontic appliances.
