Welcome to “Wit.” Thanks for coming. This play was originally written, and received the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, in 1999. I have wanted to mount a production of the play ever since I saw a cutting of the show at the national festival in 2001 and subsequently read the script. I found out then, this was Margaret Edson’s first play. Wow, a Pulitzer Prize winner with your first script. I liked what the piece said and how it

was presented, but thought, wow, there is a lot on the back of a single actress. Vivian is on stage the entire time, and much of the play, by herself. The subject matter and language are not easy, to say nothing of the physical requirements of a show about stage four metastatic ovarian cancer.

Well, despite the difficult subject, I’m glad we’re finally able to produce “Wit.” I have always appreciated every volunteer who has given their time to be involved in Aberdeen Community Theatre projects, but especially someone willing to take on the challenges of the lead character in this piece. I hope you enjoy the efforts of the entire cast of “Wit.” We are always on the lookout for new volunteers. Carleen Jaspers is making her debut with ACT, as well as Tony Kollman, although he was on stage for the NSU production of “A Flea in Her Ear,” which performed here while Johnson Fine Arts Center was being renovated a few years ago. Welcome to them both.

ACT’s next production will be the summer musical. Yes, summer will be here eventually. We were looking to get the rights to produce “Mama Mia,” however they would not release the rights to us until fall. – Maybe next year? Since we typically do our musical in the summer, we had to look elsewhere, and have decided to mount “Jesus Christ Superstar.”

Auditions will be April 29 and 30 at 7:00 PM, here at the Capitol Theatre. No experience is necessary, and we hope to see plenty of new faces at auditions.

Don’t forget to stop by between live productions and take in a movie. We have a film screening every night in Theatre B at 7:00 PM. Check out CapitolCinema.net or AberdeenCommunityTheatre.com for up-to-date information on what’s playing any night.

Once again, thank you for your support. Please use the coupon below to make a vital contribution to the programs here at ACT. You can designate your funds to the new LED lighting for the entire facility or simply for ongoing expenses in the historic Capitol Theatre. We can only do it with your help. Your support is much needed and even more appreciated.

Thanks again!

MARK ANDERSON (Dr. Kelekian/Mr. Bearing) Christian, husband, attorney-judge. It has been six years since Mark has been on stage. His performance is dedicated to his mom, Betty L. Anderson, who passed away from cancer in 2010. May she be smiling on his performance.

PAULETTE CALLEN (E.M. Ashford) Before retiring to her home state, Paulette spent 40 years in Manhattan, acting, writing, and supporting her artistic habits with a variety of jobs. Her acting history also includes summer stock, improv at Dudley Riggs, and community theaters in Fargo and the Minneapolis/St. Paul area.

NICOLE CHRISTIANSEN (Lab Tech /Student /Resident 1) Reappearing on stage for the first time since “Leaving Iowa” in 2012, Nicole is excited to get back into acting. She is the Circulation Manager of Beulah Williams Library on NSU’s campus. During her hiatus from stage, she married fellow cast member Eliot Lucas in 2016.

CARLEEN JASPERS (Vivian Bearing) Author Kobi Yamada suggests: “Every now and then bite off more than you can chew.” Carleen agrees. She dedicates her performance to dear friends who have died too young from cancer: Sally, Deanna, Pam, Donna, Jane, T.J., Katie and Mary Ann.

TONY KOLLMAN (Jason Posner, M.D.) was very active in theater at NSU in the late '90s and early 2000s, working both on and off stage. After a long hiatus, he is delighted to be performing again in his second appearance on the Capitol stage and his ACT debut.

LIZ LEWNO (Lab Tech /Student /Resident 3) This is Liz’s first straight show with ACT. She has been involved with YPT/ACT since she was in the 6th grade. She currently is an Insurance Producer for Chad Bent-State Farm and bartends at the Zoo. She hopes that you enjoy the results of all the hard work the cast and crew have put into this show.

CRE

WELIOT LUCAS (Lab Tech /Student /Resident 2) is a graphic designer at McQuillen Creative Group. He is also the designer of Aberdeen Magazine. He was last seen as Stephen in ACT’s “Girls Weekend” (2015).

JACI WICKS (Susie Monohan, RN) is continuing to pursue her personal life goals, which are to become more comfortable while being uncomfortable. Transforming into Susie has been emotionally daunting, yet relatable to life off stage. She belongs to a small army of fans: her husband, Wade, and two sons Wyatt (12) and Liam (9). She’s excited to bring her bedside manner to the stage!

JOHN SCHWAB (Light designer/operator) is so happy to “shine a light” on ACT’s production of “WIT” as the light designer. He has been involved in ACT/YPT since 2009 and his most recent role was stage manager for YPT’s “Little Mermaid Jr.” He’s been interested in lights since he was born and is excited to have designed his first show here at ACT.

CHARLOTTE GRANDPRE (Sound board operator) is the tech assistant at ACT. She received her bachelor’s in music education from NSU in 2014. She has always had a strong love for film and musical scores and is more than thrilled to be a helping hand behind the scenes here at ACT. She has a wonderful husband and daughter. In her free time, she loves studying video game sound design and scores.

JAMES L. WALKER (Director) is an Aberdeen native. He has acted, directed and adjudicated professionally for more than 35 years and has been ACT’s artistic/managing director for 31 years. He has earned numerous directing and scenic design awards. Jim was appointed by the governor to the South Dakota Arts Council in 2008 and currently serves as chair. Jim is also a member of the national board of directors of the American Association of Community Theatre and currently serves on the Executive Committee as Vice President for Festivals. In June 2015 he received the prestigious AACT Fellow Award.

MARILYN DAVIS (Costumes) made her ACT mainstage costuming debut for “Anything Goes,” after costuming many YPT shows. Since then, she has costumed more than 25 shows. Davis received Best Costumes at the 2009 AACT Region V festival for her work in ACT’s “How to Talk Minnesotan: The Musical.”

NELLA THOMPSON (Costumes) cannot remember a time when she did not have some type of needle in her hand. Sewing, knitting, crocheting, and cross-stitch are just a few of her needle interests. Nella has enjoyed stitching since receiving sewing cards for her third birthday. She has been sewing costumes with ACT for 22 years. Nella takes pleasure in contributing to the Aberdeen community which she terms “Little Town on the Prairie” with her sewing skills.

BRIAN T. SCHULTZ (Sound Design) resides in Aberdeen with his wife, Juli, and two daughters. His is also ACT’s associate artistic/managing director and SBLT’s director. Schultz received Best Supporting Actor in the AACT 2009 national festival for his role as Russ Renner in ACT’s “How to Talk Minnesotan: The Musical” and Comprehensive Creativity in the 2013 AACT Region V festival for his work on “The Top Job!” After winning first place in the 2015 South Dakota State Chili Cook-Off, he competed in the World Chili Cook-Off in Reno, NV in fall 2015.

BARRY JAKED (Technical Director) This is Barry’s second show as the Technical Director for ACT. Previous credit for ACT - Disney’s “The Little Mermaid Jr.”. Other credits include over 150 shows for Burning Coal Theatre - Raleigh, NC, Cary Players - Cary, NC, Halle Cultural Arts Center - Apex, NC, North Raleigh Arts and Community Theatre - Raleigh, NC, Bare Theatre - Raleigh, NC. Barry is looking forward to the Summer musical here at ACT and the remainder of the 2018 season.
