What is an NVQ?AnNVQisaNationalVocationalQualificationagreedandaccreditedbytheQualificationsCurriculumAuthority(QCA).NVQshavebeendesignedtoaidindividualsworkinginindustrytoobtainaqualificationrelevanttotherolewhichtheycurrentlyundertake.AnNVQcanrunalongsideworkactivitiesenablingindividualstoimprovetheirskills,knowledgeandunderstandingwhilstprogressingtheircareerinfull-timeemployment.

AnNVQ,beingwork-based,isanidealroutetoshowthatanindividualcandeliverrealworkwithinarealworkenvironment.Itrequiresacandidatetoproduceaportfolioofevidenceofactivitiestheyhaveundertakenwithintheirworkplace.ThisevidenceistobereferencedagainsttheNationalOccupationalStandards(NOS)forthechosensubject.TheNOSaremadeupofessential,coreandoptionalunits.EachNVQspecifiestheminimumnumberofunitstobesuccessfullycompletedfortheawardtobeachieved.

EachUnitisbrokendownintoElementswhichconsistof:• PerformanceCriteria–Expectationsforacompetentperformance.• ScopeandRange–Circumstancesinwhichthejobisperformed.• KnowledgeandUnderstanding–Informationthatacandidateshouldknow.

Where to begin?InordertoapplyforanNVQyouwillneedtosubmittheapplicationformalongwithacopyofyourcurrentCVandaletterofsupportfromyouremployer.Ifselfemployed,apersonalstatementwithwitnesstestimonyshouldbeprovidedinplaceofaletterofsupport.Confirmationwillbesentinrespectofyourapplicationwithintenworkingdaysofitsreceipt.

How long will it take me?AnNVQLevel3couldbecompletedwithinapproximatelytenmonths,whereasanNVQLevel4couldbeachievedwithinapproximately12monthsfromtheinitialintroductoryday.Theactualtimescalewillbeareflectiononanindividual’scommitmenttotheprogramme.Yourpersonaldevelopmentplanwillsettimescaleswhichreflectyourcommitment,thesupportofyouremployer,andyoureffectiveparticipationintherangeofunderpinningactivitiesthattheAssociationoffers.AllNVQscanbecompletedonashortertimescale;however,thiswillbeanagreementbetweentheassessorandthecandidate.

How would an NVQ benefit me?Manyorganisationsandemployerslookforindividualswithbothqualificationsandworkexperience.AnNVQcanprovideyouwiththeseattributes.AnNVQ,beingwork-based,peer-supported,assessedandexternallyverifiedbyanAwardingBody,isanidealroutetoshowthatanindividualcandeliverrealworkwithinarealworkenvironment,andthattheirworkisofaprofessionallevel.

Furthersupportisprovidedbyarangeofone-dayCPDactivitiesspecificallytailoredtocurrentandfutureneeds.

How will my work be assessed?UponapplicationofyourchosenNVQyouwillberequestedtoselectyouroptionalunitsandrequiredtoattendaone-dayinduction.Eachunitcontainsanoutlineoftheevidencerequirementstobemet.Acandidatemustprovidethisevidencefromtheirday-to-dayactivitiesandreferencethistotherequirementsnecessary.Ateachfollowingfocusdaythecandidatewillprovideevidence,assetoutintheirpersonaldevelopmentplanforassessment,andwillalsoagreewiththeassessorthenextstageintheprocess.Thiswillincludeevidencerequiredforfutureunits.Arrangementswillbemadefortheon-siteobservationtowardstheendofthequalification.Candidateswillbesupportedinthegenerationofevidence,question-and-answersessionsandprofessionaldiscussionswillbeheldtofillanygapsandassistinthecompletionoftheunits.

Spatial Data ManagementLevel 4

Introduction to Spatial Data Management

Level 4ThisNVQLevel4isdesignedforpeoplewhocarryout,oraspireto,thefunctionofSpatialDataManagement.TheunitscomprisingthecompleteNVQprovideanoverviewofallaspectsofthejobrole.Therefore,theyalsogiveausefulspecificationforpeopleseekingguidanceonthecompetenceneededtoperformthefunction.

Candidatesforthequalificationareexpectedtodemonstratesubstantialexperience,knowledgeandunderstandingofSpatialDataManagementactivities.ThejobsandtitlesofpeopleprovidingSpatialDataManagementvarybetweenemployersandprojects.Thisawardisrelevanttoallthosepractitionersinthesectorwhoareworkinginatechnical,practitioner,supervisoryormanagementcapacity.

TheaimoftheNVQistostretchandenhancethecandidate’sperformanceintheworkplaceenablingthemtoprovideevidencetomeettherequirementsofeachunit.Thismakesthequalificationdiagnostic,developmental,demandingandqualifying.Somecandidatesmayneedtowidentheircurrentjobrolestoachievetheevidencerequired.

What is involved?ThepurposeoftheNVQisforcandidatestoundertakeandprovideevidenceeitheronnewworksormaintenancecontexts.Thisshouldprovidecandidateswithtechnicalknowledgeindatamanagementappliedthroughpracticalexperience.

Onsuccessfulcompletionofthequalification,thecandidatewillbeabletodemonstratetheycan:
