Last Chance To See: Blue Whale

Sunday, 14 November 2010 Final

In the final episode Stephen Fry and naturalist Mark Carwardine go to the Sea of Cortez (Mexico) in search of Blue whales.

In San Ignacio they encounter Grey whales– the “friendliest whales in the world”. They see rock art on the mountains as they cross to the Sea of Cortez to look for whales.

In the Sea of Cortez Mark and Stephen get involved in a project to collect sea lion poo from an island, so that scientists can see how the changing eco-system is affecting the wildlife. Mark has a scary trip to the island to collect, and both end the day by snorkelling with the animals.

The travellers join a shark-monitoring trip aiming to measure and collect DNA on Whale Sharks and Mark swims with the shark.

They then spend a week on board Horizon, the ship that will take them to Blue whales. On Horizon they encounter Humboldt squid, the giant squid that is taking over the ocean and attacking divers and fishermen. They also see luminous algae and visit an island where fossilised whalebones prove whales have been around for a very long time.

Mark takes a small plane to find Blue whales and is successful. Mark then guides the boat and Stephen finally sees a Blue whale for himself.

Sisters Of War

Sunday, 14 November 2010

Sisters of War is a tale of strength, survival and forgiveness. It is inspired by the remarkable true story of two extraordinary Australian women, Lorna Whyte (Sarah Snook), an army nurse and Sister Berenice Twohill (Claire van der Boom), a Catholic nun from New South Wales. Although they were two very different women, their friendship would survive the incredible events of World War II.

In January 1942, the Japanese war machine thundered across South East Asia. In its path lay a tiny Catholic mission station Vunapope, on the island of New Britain. Here a handful of Australian nurses, led by Matron Kay Parker (Susie Porter) took refuge along with a number of wounded Australian soldiers. Abandoned by their commanding officers, they were left to face the Japanese alone.

When the Japanese arrived at Vunapope, the nurses and their patients were saved from massacre by the mission’s leader, Polish-born Bishop Leo Scharmach (Gerald Lepkowski). This astonishing man bluffed the Japanese into believing that he was a personal friend of Hitler and that the mission was Hitler’s property.

In the dark days that followed, Sister Berenice and Lorna found themselves facing starvation, beatings and torture. Their beliefs were constantly tested, as was their friendship. Sister Berenice idolised Bishop Scharmach: Lorna was convinced he was a collaborator. The tiny mission became a setting for betrayal, heroism and death. And all the normal rules of war were broken.

After six months, Lorna and Sister Berenice were separated. The Australian nurses were sent to Yokohama as part of a prisoner exchange. But the exchange program collapsed and the nurses found themselves trapped in war-time Japan, freezing and ravaged by disease. At the same time Sister Berenice, Bishop Scharmach and the nuns were taken to a dark, uninhabited jungle valley where they would be safe from air raids.

Sisters of War is adapted from the wartime diaries and interviews with Lorna Johnston (nee Whyte), Sister Berenice and others who survived. The story of their captivity, their friendship, their will to survive and their extraordinary courage has never been told.

Following Sisters of War, a short documentary featuring interviews with Sister Berenice and Lorna Johnston will screen on ABC1.

Talking Heads: Kerry Armstrong

Monday, 15 November 2010

This week’s guest on Talking Heads is Kerry Armstrong. In this enlightening interview Armstrong reveals to Peter Thompson that after a career ranging from The Sullivans, Dynasty, films such as Lantana, two AFI awards and a Logie, she is rethinking the future of her acting career.

“It feels like I'm almost all done!”

Armstrong started out as a Channel 9 weather girl while still in Year 11. She cut her acting teeth at the famous Hagen-Berghoff Studio in New York and was heavily influenced by its philosophy.

“There are actors who are really good liars and what they can do is...they can pretend to be someone else and then there are actors who...literally do a biography of the person, which is what I do.”

Heather Jelly in Seachange, still one of Armstrong’s best known roles, is a case in point. Armstrong’s view of the character’s psychology was different than that of the director and scriptwriter. She won. She admits that finding the ‘truth’ in her roles has led to a reputation for being difficult.

Although she’s happy to plug her current project, the third series of Bed of Roses, it’s clear that celebrity in itself holds no appeal.

“Whoever invented the word should be shot. It's a bit like the casinos, you put the money into those machines and how much across the board do people get back?”

Family Confidential

Monday, 15 November 2010 New Series

A powerful series on some of Australia’s most famous and influential families opens with the hidden face of Frank Lowy, at an extraordinary turning point in his family’s history.

This year marks the 50th anniversary of the global multi-million dollar retail brand Westfield which Frank Lowy created from a small suburban shopping centre.

But behind the meteoric success is a family that is still struggling to reconcile its past and its future. As Lowy comes full circle with his past, he returns to eastern Europe to finally lay the ghosts that have shaped him and his family for over 70 years.

The Lowys are pillars of the Australian Jewish community, but Frank’s father, Hugo, struggled to make a living and provide for his wife and five children during the Nazi occupation of Hungary. When he disappeared suddenly, and without trace in 1944, the experience marked Frank indelibly.

Years later, despite the incredible business success he enjoys in his adopted country Australia, Frank Lowy and his three sons, who have joined him at the highest echelons of corporate power, still nurse a deep, private wound.

He speaks about it for the first time and the private side of the bold, tough businessman is shown to be poignantly vulnerable.

Making Australia Happy

Monday, 15 November 2010 New Series

What is the key to real, sustained happiness?

Why are some people perpetually happy while others seem doomed to a life of misery? Is it love, money, good looks or good genes? Or is happiness really all in the mind?

In recent years, science has made significant progress towards understanding the concept of happiness, answering questions that have plagued mankind throughout history.

Scientists have discovered that happiness is not just a fleeting emotion or an inborn quality that some people are blessed with. Rather, it is a skill that can be cultivated and the knock-on effects can be seen in our brains, bloodstreams and behaviour. What’s more, happiness is contagious.

For the first time ever, in Making Australia Happy, the latest and most fascinating research from the science of happiness has been compiled, consolidated and taken for a test drive on the suburban streets of Sydney.

In this three-part series, eight ordinary people from one of Australia’s most miserable areas embark on an extraordinary journey. Hoping to find greater fulfilment and meaning in their lives, they’ve signed up to an eight-week happiness program. They’ll work with an elite team of experts, and undergo a series of scientifically validated experiments and challenges based on positive psychology, mindfulness and mind-body interventions. What they experience will change their lives, and what they discover could enrich us all.

Chris is now a human rights lawyer with the United Nations.

He replicates Hilde’s generosity by starting his own scholarship fund to educate bright children in his village of Mukubu.

But he is stunned when Kenya’s public schools start failing. Simultaneously Kenya falls into ethnic-based electoral violence.

Chris knows that ignorance fuels ethnic hatred. Education has never been more important. He must decide what to do.

A panel of leading authors and expert celebrity guests join Jennifer for investigations into some of the most popular reading genres, they reveal the conventions, controversies, and titles that have helped shaped the literary landscape.

Jennifer presents a special on graphic novels or comics if you would prefer. These last two novels coming from the pens of panellists featured in this special – so let’s meet Jennifer’s four guests.

Writer and illustrator Nicki Greenberg – who has produced the graphic novel interpretations of The Great Gatsby and Hamlet.

Sleek Geeks: Big Mouth

Thursday, 18 November 2010

Fifteen years ago Karl’s daughter told him he had bum breath. This set Karl off on a journey to find out what causes halitosis and most importantly, how to cure it. Don’t get mad, get fact.

This week Karl and Adam reveal the gases and bacteria at play in your mouth. They talk to world leading academic on bad breath, Mel Rosenberg. A visit to a mouth and nose specialist leads to Karl discovering he has an additional cavity in his sinuses produced by the build up, and subsequent explosion, of pus. Luckily there is a camera up his nose to show exactly where it is and what it looks like.

We find out how you can test yourself for bad breath, cure it and also how to tell a stinky friend. Karl explains the best way of reducing bad breath, which is a combination of a breakfast with roughage and brushing your tongue.

Ruben creates Elephant’s Toothpaste, which has nothing to do with elephants or toothpaste, but the eruption created by hydrogen peroxide will convince you that it has a lot to do with both.

Its Karl’s turn to set up the Rank-o-meter, and he puts Adam through a blind taste test, of which ox tongue isn’t the most shocking. Electro-pop band Art v Science join the Geeks with an original anthem to Bad Breath.

Meanwhile, David Potter leaves hospital in a blaze of glory and asks Missy (Adrienne Pickering) to move in with him. She promises to stay at least until he’s well, still avoiding his questions about her past. New Tricks: Blood Is Thicker Than Water

Saturday, 20 November 2010

The UCOS team is having drinks on board DAC Strickland’s (Anthony Calf) sailing boat when they are rudely interrupted by a heated argument on a neighbouring boat. Wealthy property developer Lawrence Fisher (James Weber Brown) receives a drink in the face and some choice words from a young woman, before she is bundled away. Gallantly, but ill-advisedly, Halford (James Bolam) intervenes – only to get a bruised shin and torn jacket for his efforts.

After the woman calms down, Halford learns that she is Leanne Sweeting (Joanna Horton), the daughter of a waterman whom she believes was set up by Fisher. She tells Halford that her father, Neville Sweeting (Rob Spendlove), was made a scapegoat when there was a disastrous collision between his tug and a luxury cruiser owned by Grant Milburn, one of Fisher’s business rivals. Five people, including Milburn, died in the collision and it made the headlines.

Though he was cleared in the original investigation, crippling guilt, coupled with a successful civil action brought by Milburn’s widow, Carole (Barbara Flynn), have left Neville a broken man. But Leanne is determined to clear his name and claims that she has a new witness who can prove that Fisher sabotaged Milburn’s boat.

The team’s interest is aroused and all are surprised by Strickland’s keenness to investigate his sailing chums.

But Darshavin’s information comes at a price. Harry (Peter Firth) does not trust him, but with 3,000 people predicted to lose their lives and precious little time before the bomb goes off, he has no choice but to let Lucas meet Darshavin, as requested.

When Lucas goes off comms [incommunicado], the team fears Darshavin’s hold over him is still strong and Lucas will not be able to cope with the pressure. Lucas struggles to keep control of the situation and Darshavin is on the verge of revealing the target, when Sarah Caulfield (Genevieve O’Reilly) turns up and throws the entire operation into jeopardy. Darshavin takes Sarah hostage, threatening to kill her unless his demands are met. Lucas realises that Darshavin is behind the attack and it is up to him to persuade Darshavin to reveal the code to deactivate the bomb.

Meanwhile, sensing there may be traitors in their midst, Harry tips off Sarah’s boss, Samuel Walker (Brian Protheroe), about a covert meeting of intelligence officers in Basel. Art Nation

This week on Art Nation, Fenella Kernebone visits the NGA’s latest exhibition, Space Invaders. Featuring work by Australia’s most prolific street artists, it’s billed as playful, edgy, clever and satirical. Previously only seen gracing the walls of dingy alleyways, at last this work has claimed a spot on the pristine walls of one of the nation’s esteemed galleries.

Henry Wagons pays respect to The Art of Chess at Bendigo Art Gallery. This travelling exhibition from RS&A Gallery London is an ongoing project that features chess sets designed by leading contemporary artists including Tracey Emin, Damien Hirst, Maurizio Cattelan and Paul McCarthy.

Art Nation also profiles Ursula Yovich who recently brought her emotive one-woman cabaret show to The Melbourne Festival. Magpie Blues is Yorvich’s musical account of growing up in the Northern Territory as the offspring of a Serbian father and an Arnhem Land mother. Her musical story is soulfully sung with support from her four-piece band, and it is an inspirational tale.

Closing the show is a performance by Melbourne band, The Orbweavers.

Art Nation will be repeated on ABC2 – Sunday, November 14 at 7:00pm

Poh's Kitchen

Bill Granger is internationally renowned for his breakfasts. His scrambled eggs have been described by The Times as the ‘best in the world’. This week Bill visits Poh’s Kitchen to share two of his stylish yet simple breakfast dishes, while Poh cooks a breakfast dish from her childhood and another that’s a weekend favourite.

Poh’s not an early morning person – in fact when she’s painting she’s been known to do an all-nighter! But sometimes she forces herself to get to the market before the crowds and when she does, she likes to treat herself to breakfast. Her favourite is porridge with banana, cinnamon and honey.

When Poh heard breakfast guru, Bill Granger was coming to town, she had to invite him to her kitchen. And he arrives with a smoked trout to cook his own simplified version of the famous Anglo-Indian breakfast dish – Kedgeree. It’s gently spiced rice with sweet smoked trout, hard-boiled eggs and freshened up with lime and coriander. Poh cooks another rice dish – chicken congee – a favourite savoury rice porridge breakfast from her childhood and a staple in many Asian countries.

For their second dish, Poh and Bill cook remarkably similar recipes – each with their own twist. Poh cooks eggs poached in chorizo and bean salsa. It’s a bit Mexican, a bit Spanish and a bit Poh – super easy and super tasty – posh baked beans, eggs and sausage cooked in one pan. Bill cooks Shakshouka – an Israeli breakfast dish that originated in North Africa and was taken by Tunisian Jews to Israel - poached eggs in a fry-up of capsicums, tomatoes and onions with a dash of paprika and chilli and served with crisp paprika flatbread.

Poh’s Kitchen will be repeated on ABC2 – Thursday, November 18 at 6:00pm

Breaking Bad

Once a successful research chemist, but now relegated to teaching in a New Mexico high school, Walter White (Bryan Cranston) is diagnosed with cancer and given only two years to live.

Choosing to keep the bad news from his wife, Skyler (Anna Gunn), and their disabled teenage son, he vows to do whatever it takes to provide for his family’s future.

Opportunity knocks when his DEA (Drug Enforcement Administration) agent brother-in-law busts a local meth operation, inspiring Walt to start his own mobile drug lab and enlist a former student, Jesse (Aaron Paul), as his partner. When forced to kill a pair of vengeful drug dealers and then tell Skyler about his illness, he’s left with nothing to lose.

Desperate to stay one step ahead of the law and his drug-dealing rivals, Walt undergoes an exhilarating transformation from struggling husband and father to ruthless competitor in the drug trade’s criminal underworld.

Starring Bryan Cranston (Malcolm in the Middle), Aaron Paul (Mission: Impossible III) Anna Gunn (Deadwood), Betsy Brandt (Shelf Life) and Dean Norris (Little Miss Sunshine).
