Message Stick: Full Circle

Sunday, 13 June 2010

Senior QLD public servant, Denise Hagan went to Lockhart River for six months and ended up staying for five years. She arrived as just another untrustworthy white bureaucrat who was going to tell the local community what to do. But this program was different. Denise Hagan listened to the locals’ dreams and helped put them in place. In the process, Denise fell in love with Lockhart River and the Aboriginal community cried when this ‘sister’ finally had to leave.

With State and Federal Governments often failing to help Indigenous Australians by taking a ‘we know what’s best’ approach to communities in need, Full Circle documents a success story about how this community successfully trialled a unique partnership between government, business and community.

The strategy, based on a home grown community plan has shown encouraging results for Lockhart River, so much so, that they have won business awards, set up profitable companies, and adopted it as a permanent approach to addressing community needs.

Those involved in the development of the Lockhart River Community Plan, say it would not have succeeded without the trust and respect of the Executive Director of Community Development, Denise Hagan, who listened to the community and supported their ideas.

“When we use those traditional approaches with the ‘cooked up’ outside solutions, it actually limits the creativity of people, so it’s much more important to work with their ideas and support them,” Ms Hagan said.

Dr. Jim Varghese who was appointed the first QLD Government Champion to Lockhart River says, “The result is one of the best strategic plans I have seen in Indigenous Australia, one which speaks from the heart, one to which the government is able to respond.”

He argues that the Lockhart River experiment has been so successful it should be extended to impoverished Aboriginal communities around the country.

Agatha Christie's Poirot: Three Act Tragedy

Sunday, 13 June 2010

Poirot (David Suchet) visits Cornwall to attend a dinner hosted by his friend, the retired actor Sir Charles Cartwright (Martin Shaw). When an amiable local Reverend (Nigel Pegram) chokes to death on his cocktail Poirot cannot see how murder can have been committed. With the exception of Sir Charles’s doctor friend Sir Bartholomew Strange (Art Malik) and the enigmatic Miss Egg Lytton Gore (Kimberley Nixon) any one of the eclectic mix of guests might have taken the glass - the inquisitive playwright, vulnerable ex-jockey, celebrated dressmaker, faithful housekeeper or the young suitor of Miss Lytton Gore. There seems to be no motive for murder and as Poirot predicts, no trace of poison is found in the Reverend’s glass.

But weeks later Sir Bartholomew Strange chokes to death at a dinner party he is hosting with many of the same guests. Poirot and Charles travel from Monte Carlo to Strange’s home in Yorkshire where Charles is determined to solve his friend’s death and to impress Egg. Again, no trace of poison is found in his glass but a mortuary report confirms that Strange was poisoned and this time motives seem plentiful. Could the missing butler a mysterious telephone message or a secret tunnel be key to solving the case?

It is only after the death of another innocent victim that the seeming impossibility of the first murder begins to make sense.

Compass: The Mission: Part 3

Sunday, 13 June 2010

The Mission, is a four-part documentary series by the team who produced the extremely popular series The Abbey for Compass. The Mission is the story of missionaries in reverse, as three young Nigerian Catholic priests, who haven’t volunteered, who have never left Africa before, are sent to save Tasmania’s struggling Church. But can they fulfil The Mission?

The series follows the young missionary priests as they travel from Equatorial Africa, Nigeria to Australia’s island State, Tasmania.

In part three, it’s six months into The Mission and the three Nigerian missionaries are finding themselves part of a Tasmanian Catholic community looking for solutions to churches closing down, congregations dying out and no priestly vocations.

On the isolated northwest coast Fr Felix has been spending many hours alone in his room, until he finds a young mate who introduces him to the world of Tasmanian wood chopping, BBQs and ferret racing.

While Fr Felix gets a cultural dunking, down South Fr Christopher has his own Aussie experience. In contrast to the thousands he’s used to in Nigeria, he’s meeting with the three remaining members of Tasmania’s once well known religious society, the Legion of Mary. Further questions arise for the priests as they discover that the Aussie celebrations for the birth of Christ mean the mayhem of the ‘festive season’.

For Fr Christopher Christmas Eve is also crunch time with Fr Brian.

And even Fr Kene’s unshakeable faith seems rocked by the sudden numbers of ‘once a year Catholics’. Will the cultural divide prove too hard to cross as the priests go deeper into their mission in a distant land?

Voyage To The Planets

Thursday, 17 June 2010 Final

Blast-off with Voyage To The Planets: an Australian-made documentary series exploring the pleasures and pitfalls of travel to the alien planets of our own solar system.

Narrated by Richard Roxburgh, this series visits the planets from a very personal perspective: that of the people who have sent probes hurtling to strange worlds, and also from the viewpoint of any one of us who might dream of making a trip ourselves.

For more than 70 years Pluto was counted as the ninth planet, an isolated but sentimental favourite at the end of the solar system. But in recent years this little world has been at the centre of a neighbourhood dispute of cosmic proportions. Just what on Earth caused Pluto to be struck off as a planet? It now seems Pluto has company, and lots of it. And we have more in common with this distant realm than you may have ever imagined.

The American Future: A History By Simon Schama: What Is An American?

Thursday, 17 June 2010 Final

Historian Simon Schama looks at the bitter conflict over immigration in American history. Who should be allowed to enter America and call themselves an American has always been one of the nation’s most divisive issues. It continued to be so at the 2008 election. He traces the roots of this conflict to the founding of America.

The early settlers were themselves immigrants but they saw America as fundamentally a white and Protestant nation. Schama looks at the key events that challenged this view. The annexation of parts of Mexico in 1848 that made 100,000 non-whites American citizens; the immigration and subsequent expulsion of the Chinese in the late 19th century; and the massive immigration from Eastern Europe during the industrialisation of the 1920s.

Each time there have been those who have insisted America must stay white if it is to stay true to itself, and each time they have been defeated by the sheer force of history. John F Kennedy defined America as a Nation of Immigrants in 1964 and Schama argues that the candidacy of Barack Obama represents the final triumph of the vision of America as a multi-ethnic nation.

30 Seconds: Be The Tool

Friday, 18 June 2010

30 Seconds is an six-part satirical drama that lifts the lid on the advertising industry and the people who inhabit it.

Set in and around the fictional advertising agency BND Worldwide, we follow Martin Manning, (Joel Tobeck) BND’s egomaniacal Creative Director as he stokes the often ridiculous, true-to-life drama that arises from the conflicting interests of an advertising agency and its demanding clients.

In this second episode, automotive giant Daiyonda’s new Head of Marketing, Marion West, briefs BND on a campaign aimed at penetrating the female market with the new Urban Ranger. Unfortunately BND’s largely male creative department is having trouble penetrating anything as Martin and Sumo wrestle over a new female staff member. BND’s masculinity is further put to the test when Bob Poeffer from Poeffer Power Tools briefs them on a powerful new drill.

Art Nation

Fenella Kernebone will host a special episode from China to coincide with Victoria Week at the Shanghai World Expo, a major architectural and cultural showcase for Australia and the world.

A striking red-rust steel building rising 20 metres off the ground, the Australia Pavilion is a landmark building designed by Melbourne’s Randal Marsh and Roger Wood. Kernebone looks at the design of the pavilion and at Expo itself as an international showcase of architectural experimentation.

Reko Rennie is one of 400 Australian artists who have been invited to display work at the Expo. He has been commissioned to make a site-specific work for the Australia Pavilion. Guest presenter for Art Nation, Rennie is travelling the streets of Shanghai looking at Chinese street art. Amongst the street artists features is Sail whose work is uniquely Chinese. Sail’s work uses Chinese characters distinguishing it from much of the Western-inspired street art that dominates the Shanghai scene.

Art Nation also looks at the new breed of post Cultural Revolution contemporary visual artists, illustrators and photographers operating out of Shanghai. This younger crop of artists, whose focus is more personal than overtly political, are known as the ‘Gelatin Generation’.

The program will close with a performance from The Blue Grassy Knoll, an energetic 5 piece gypsy-bluegrass troupe who have developed a unique project of writing scores to accompany the silent films of Buster Keaton. The Blue Grassy Knoll will be playing a new score set to a famous Chinese film from 1923 at the Australia Pavilion later in 2010 and have agreed to give a special preview for Art Nation viewers.

Talking Heads

This week on Talking Heads Peter Thompson is joined by Andrew Fraser, the high-flying Melbourne lawyer who tripped up and found himself on the wrong side of the gates in maximum security.

At the top of his game, Fraser was defending some of Australia’s most notorious criminals including Alan Bond and Lewis Moran. He had a two million dollar home overlooking the water at St Kilda, a penthouse in the snowfields at Falls Creek and a Mercedes Benz coupe.

With money to burn, he developed a bad cocaine habit. He estimates that by the late nineties he’d put 100-grands’ worth up his nose. His life started to spiral out of control.

In 1999 he became embroiled in a drug importation deal and ended up losing everything – his career, his house, his wife and, for five years, his freedom. His cellmates were psychopaths, serial murderers, paedophiles and rapists.

Now a reformed character, Fraser has a new career as a writer with two books published and another due out this year.

Artscape: Artists At Work: Sisters Of Gelam

Sisters of Gelam is a musical theatre performance by pioneering Melbourne-based Indigenous Theatre Company, Ibijerri. Combining cabaret, puppetry, dance and spoken word, Sisters of Gelam is a deeply personal, autobiographical and poetic journey into the heart of a prominent Australian clan widely known in Indigenous arts circles – the Maza family.

Featuring renowned actor and artistic director of Ibijerri, Rachel Maza Long (My Year without Sex, Radiance, Seachange) and her sister Lisa Maza, Sisters of Gelam is a deeply personal exploration into the ties that bind two sisters and the social and political influences that have forged their mixed cultural identities.

Combining interviews, family history, archival material, song writing collaborations, not to mention the show’s rehearsal process through to the opening night performance - this Artists at Work program explores how Indigenous theatre emerged from the highly political activism of the Australian Black Power movement in the late 1960s to the much more varied and dynamic personal life story accounts that it celebrates today.

Artscape: Artists At Work: Sister Of Gelam will be repeated on ABC2 - Sunday, June 20 at 6:30pm

Poh's Kitchen

This week on Poh’s Kitchen your tastebuds won’t know what’s hit them - savoury sweets and sweet savouries - Poh is exploring sweet and savoury from two very different perspectives. She’s invited French chef Emmanuel Mollois to join her to add some twists to the soufflé.

Poh joked that this episode could be called ‘Taste First: Think Later’. The Asian love of sweet meats and salty desserts might seem a bit ‘wild’ at first but the absolutely delicious recipes in this episode will win over the faint-hearted.

Most children love chocolate but when Poh was little one of her favourite snacks was sugared cuttlefish, the balance of sweet and savoury being a hallmark of Asian cuisine. To demonstrate, Poh cooks the deliciously fragrant and sweet dry beef floss curry (Serunding Daging) with turmeric rice.

Emmanuel, true to his French heritage, cooks a soufflé. But not a traditional version, he’s also wants to create something savoury with a young, sweet taste and whips up an Asparagus Soufflé that is simple and elegant.

For dessert Poh uses sticky rice to create Kuiy Seri Muka – a traditional Malaysian bite-size snack with a sticky rice base and slightly salty coconut milk custard topping. Emmanuel makes a frozen lime and mango soufflé with the zing of lime and the smooth sweetness of mango.

Poh’s Kitchen will be repeated on ABC2 - Thursday, June 17 at 6:00pm

The New Inventors

Hosted by James O’Loghlin, The New Inventors tonight will prove that Aussie inventors love sport as much as the rest of us, with three brand new inventions designed to help us along the path to glory in some of Australia’s most popular sports. Inventions featured on the program:

SWEET V – by inventor Cameron Tradell from QLD

Cricket is a national obsession, but the game is changing. Shorter forms of the game such as One Day and 20/20 cricket are becoming increasingly popular. Young people are growing up with a different attitude to the game, with the focus increasingly on scoring as many runs as quickly as possible. In the meantime, vital batting skills are being lost. And if we can’t play cricket anymore, how will we prove to the English that we’re better than them?

There is a ‘sweet spot’ on every cricket bat. Sweet V encourages young cricketers to learn how to hit the spot every time. The invention is a cricket bat where the sweet spot has been removed, and replaced with tennis strings. This allows the batter to focus on hitting the right way every time, developing professional skills in the process.

STRIKERWALL – by inventor Peter Domjen from NSW

When it comes to the World Game, the stakes can be high. Every player wants to be faster and more accurate. But how do players acquire the skills great enough to inspire soccer riots the world over?

The Strikerwall is a fun training tool that can help young players roll like Ronaldo and bend it like Beckham. When you kick the ball onto the target it bounces back to you in a controlled way. By placing a special ramp in front of the device, you can also send the ball bouncing back at a heightened angle. The invention has a counter for measuring the number of times the ball hits the target, and another for measuring the time between hits.

CASTMASTER – by inventor Michael Newton from VIC

Australia is a country surrounded by water, so over the years fishing has become an extremely popular sport in Australia. But to fish from the beach can be really tricky. You generally need to be able to cast at least 70m to get past the breakers to where the fish are biting, which is often beyond the reach of newcomers and young people.

The Castmaster can improve even the most inexperienced angler’s casting distance by more than 40 metres. The invention is mounted onto a fishing rod, and is designed to release the line at the best possible moment. This leaves the caster free to keep both of their hands on the rod and use all of their strength and concentration to cast as far as possible. The invention could even save lives, allowing rock fishermen to cast further back from the edge of the rocks, where the risk of being swept out to sea is extremely real.

Catalyst

Aussie Amber

The semiprecious gem stone amber is of great interest to palaeontologists, because it can contain fossils of insects and other creatures, some up to 150 million years old.

The conventional wisdom has been that Australia doesn’t have any amber deposits, but a chance find by a couple in Queensland has changed that. Paul Willis travels to the beaches in far north Queensland and ventures into the rainforest where insects continue to be trapped in the sticky resin of living Kauris, the very source of amber. It isn’t until the opaque amber is examined under the light of a synchrotron that the biological specimens trapped within start to take their striking forms.

Ice Core Drought

Severe drought has gripped south-western Australia for several decades now. Climate scientists think the cause is a mix of natural cycles and human activity, but precisely what changes in the atmosphere are occurring to create this big dry are still a matter of debate. Mark Horstman uncovers new research that’s providing clues from a completely unexpected source - ice cores taken at the Australian Antarctic research facility at Law Dome. They indicate a thirty-year relationship between snowfall there and the decrease in rainfall in Western Australia.

Changing the Globe

The traditional incandescent bulb is being phased out – it’s inefficient, generating a lot of heat along with the light. But even the new fluorescent replacements for these old globes are only a transitional technology. Tanya Ha goes in search of a light source for the future.

Animal Action: Cleaning Station for Sharks and Rays

In the peaceful waters of the Great Barrier Reef, cleaner fish do a sterling job of removing microscopic parasites and diseased or dead tissue from larger fish. But cameras set up by researchers from James Cook University found something never seen before. At Osprey Reef large numbers of sharks and rays know just where to go for their regular beauty treatments.
