Draw It

Directions: For this activity the children will use letter stamps to stamp the uppercase and lowercase letter in the boxes (they can also write the letter or cut the letter out of a magazine). Next, they add pictures of objects that begin with the letter. They could draw, use

picture stamps, stickers or magazine pictures.

This activity has three versions: 2 pictures, 4 pictures or 6 pictures. You can use the

different versions for the level of your students (for example, a student that is just beginning to understand beginning sounds can use the page with 2 pictures. A

student that is advanced in their knowledge of beginning sounds can do the page with 6

pictures. You could also use the page with 2 pictures at the

beginning of the year, 4 pictures for mid year, and 6 pictures for

end of the year.

This activity can be used with any letter at any time of the year!

Helpful Tip: keep a supply of small objects that begin with the same letter in a container. If you have students that are having difficulty

thinking of objects to draw, they could reach in the container and find an object to draw. The craft and dollar stores have little objects that

are great to keep in these containers!

Hannah

B B B B

Directions: For this activity the children will use letter stamps to

stamp the letters in the boxes OR you can have them write the letters to practice handwriting. You will need to program a die in advance.

Print the die on cardstock. Cut out. Write the letters (or use letter stickers) that you want your students to practice on the die. You could

use the uppercase and lowercase form of a letter (such as B & b as shown below) or two different letters. Write three of each letter on the die. Now fold on the lines to make a cube. Place a little bit of glue

on the gray tabs and fold them to the inside of the cube. Put clear packing tape around the die to make it last longer.

To play this game the children will roll the die and write or stamp the letters in the spaces. The first letter to reach the flag is the winner!

This activity can be used with any letter at any time of the year!

Helpful Tip: You can use this activity to practice a letter of the week, letters in a child’s name, or letters that a child needs more practice with. Since you program it yourself you can use individualize it for each student!

Letter Surprise!

Directions: Print the letter surprise pages – there are 3 designs to choose from. Write a letter in each space using a white crayon (don’t tell the kids so they will be surprised!). Place the pages in your ABC

Center. The children will use water color paints to paint the inside of each space. The letters will magically appear because the crayon resists the paint! You can program these with any letter you are

working on or as a review of letters!

This is always a favorite!

t Directions: Each child will need

one “Letter Hunt” sheet on a clipboard and a pencil. The

children will search the classroom for any words beginning with the

letter you program it with. It can be a letter of the week, a letter

of their choice, or the letter their name begins with. To add some fun to this center the kids can wear the “Letter Hunt” badges

AND use a real magnifying glass. (sometimes the dollar stores have

these!). The name badges fit perfectly in Lakeshore’s Safety

Nametags - just print on cardstock and slip them in!

Roll and Draw

B F

Directions: Each child will need one “Roll and Draw” sheet and one die. (Print the die on cardstock, label with letters, and glue together). The children will roll the die, write the letter in the small box, and draw a picture that begins with that letter – or they could find a picture in a

magazine, or use stickers or stamps.

Two versions are provided. One with two pictures and one with four pictures. You can use the different

worksheets depending on the level of your students or the time of year.

Directions: Each child will need one “Alphabet Match Up” sheet. The children will search through magazines

to find each letter in a magazine. They will cut the letter out and glue it on the sheet.

You can also have the children cut out pictures that

begin with each letter - you can modify this by having them find 5, 10, or 12 pictures etc. OR do this over the

course of several days.

An uppercase and lowercase version are included. You could also laminate this sheet and have the children

match letter tiles to each letter.

Dot-It game Directions: Each child will need a “Dot-It Game” sheet

and Do-A-Dot Markers (aka bingo markers). You will also need letter cards, letter tiles OR letter magnets. Place the letters in a container. The children will choose one letter, identify it, and stamp the letter on the sheet

with a Do-A-Dot marker. Play until all of the letters are covered. There is an uppercase and lowercase version of

this game. You can have the children match upper to upper, lower to lower OR upper to lower.

You can also use this game to practice beginning sounds.

Instead of placing letter cards in the container you

can place objects or picture cards in the container. One

for each letter of the alphabet. The children will pick an object, identify the beginning sound and stamp the matching letter on the sheet. Blank sheets are

available to create your own.

Do-A-Dot Markers can be purchased at most craft stores and www.discountschoolsupply.com

Tic-tac-letter

© Pocketful of Centers www.pocketfulofcenters.blogspot.com

Directions: This game is Tic-Tac-Toe with a twist! Instead of writing X’s and O’s, the children will use letters that you are working on. This will encourage

letter identification and handwriting skills. Have each child choose a letter (or you assign the letter) and they

will write those letters on the board when playing.

Helpful Tip: Photocopy on card stock. Laminate. Have the

children use dry erase markers or crayons and play again and again!

© Pocketful of Centers www.pocketfulofcenters.blogspot.com

Directions: Print the spinners on card stock. Laminate. You can program the spinners with any letter you are

working on by placing letter stickers on the spinners or by writing them on with a dry erase marker.

There are two versions: a four letter race and a two letter race. The spinner for the four letter race will

need to have four letters written on it. You could do all different letters or the uppercase and lowercase version of two letters. The two letter race spinner could have

two letters and two blanks OR each letter written twice. Program the sheet by writing the letters in the shaded spaces. The children will spin the spinner, identify the

letter, and write it on the space on the sheet. The first letter to reach the end is the winning letter.

Little Letter Book

© Pocketful of Centers www.pocketfulofcenters.blogspot.com

Directions: This little letter book can be used for any letter of the alphabet! Simply print out the book and fold it on the lines to create a “little book”. You can program the front cover by having the children put a decorative

letter sticker in the space on the front cover. Next, they will think of two objects that begin with the letter and draw them in the spaces. On the back page they will

practice writing the letter in uppercase and lowercase. The children could also use magazine pictures or picture

stamps to complete this activity.

Directions: There are a variety of mazes that can be used to enhance letter recognition skills. You can program them for any letter your students are working on. To program

the maze, begin writing the letter in the gray space at the top of the page. Next, make a trail of the letter until it

reaches the gray space at the bottom. Fill in the remaining spaces with any other letter. I try to add

letters that have similar curves and lines.

The children can color each letter space on the maze or use Do-A-Dot Markers and stamp each one.

Four-In-A-Row Directions: There are several ways to play this game:

1. Program this game with any letters. You could use 6

letters and then program a die with the same letters. Have the children roll the die, identify the letter and cover one

space with that letter. When they have four spaces in a row (horizontally, vertically, or diagonally – they are the winner.

2. Program this game with the entire alphabet. Laminate.

Place letter magnets in a drawstring bag. Pull one letter at a time out of the bag. Identify the letter and cover it on the

board.

Use uppercase only, lowercase only or a mix of both.

This game is great for letter recognition and game strategy!

Clip It! Directions: Prepare this activity by printing the Clip-It mats on card stock and laminating. Also, use a Sharpie

Marker to write the letters on wooden clothespins. Place the clothespins in a basket. The children will pick a

clothespin and clip it to the matching letter on the mat. Your kids can match uppercase to uppercase, lowercase to

lowercase or uppercase to lowercase.

Opening clothespins is a great way to strengthen fine motor muscles!

Helpful Tip: I like to store a Clip It mat and complete set of letter clips in a large Ziploc bag. This way the child

has exactly the right amount of letters.

Directions: Playing Bingo is a fun way to practice letter recognition! You can program theses Bingo boards with any letter you are working on. Laminate. You could also

have the children write their own letters (with dry erase crayons or markers) on the board to play. Also, print the letter cards and laminate. Call one letter at a time. The children will cover the letters with a small game marker as

they are called.

This game can be played in a small or large group. It is a great activity to

have a parent helper assist with.

I like using seasonal mini erasers from www.OrientalTrading.com for

my bingo markers.

Search & Count Directions: This activity can be used for any letter of the alphabet. Print out the page. Program the worksheet (at the bottom of the page) with a letter that you have been

working on. Have the children use a crayon or colored pencil to circle the letter on the page. Next, they will count the amount of times the letter is on the page and

write it on the line at the bottom.

Helpful Tips: Photocopy the

uppercase version on one side of a worksheet

and lowercase on the other. Have the

children search for uppercase A and

lowercase a.

Add some fun to this center by using Smencils (scented pencils). You can find them at most

craft stores.

The Dot Game Directions: This is a worksheet for everyone’s favorite

“Dot Game”! Print the game on card stock and laminate OR photocopy. This game is played with a partner. To play this game, each child will choose a letter. On each turn,

the children will draw a line to connect one dot to another. When a child completes a square, they will write their

letter in the square and draw another line. At the end of the game, count up the letters to see who made the most

squares! This is a great way to practice letter writing AND to create a strategy for winning! There are two

versions of this game.

Peek-Thru Books Directions: The Peek-Thru Books are available for 6 letters, 5 letters, 4 letters and 3 letters. Have the

children fold the page in half on the long line. Next, they will carefully cut on the dashed lines, stopping at the fold, creating a flap. Now, they will write one letter on each

flap – this can be letters that you tell them to write, random letters, or letters from their name. Next, the children will lift up the flap and draw a picture of an

object that begins with the letter.

These two flaps are lifted. The letter D is written on the top of

the first flap and a dog is drawn. The letter A is written on the second flap. An apple is

revealed when it is lifted.

These three flaps have not been lifted yet.

Directions: This is a fun activity to practice letter recognition and handwriting. Print a die and program it with two different letters you are working on OR the

uppercase and lowercase form of a letter. The children will roll the die, identify the letter and write it in the

space (starting at the bottom). The first letter to reach the star is the winning letter!
