ARAKAWA, KAZUO, made store prosper. Kazuo Arakawa was born into a classic American

success story. Son of an immigrant laborer from Okinawa who founded Arakawa’s store in

Waipahu, Kazuo Arakawa saw to it in his life that the store prospered and the family success

story continued to grow. Arakawa died Sunday at Kuakini Medical Center. He was 73. When he

and his twin brother Takemi were 14-year –olds, they were part of a team of Isleathletes who

traveled to Atlantic City prior to World War II to compete in a Junior Olympics competition.

Kazuo finished third in the national event. He wrote on his return that, inspired by a letter from

his sister. “I tried my best not only for my honor, but also for Hawaii’s and especially for

Waipahu’s honor.” After attending Mid-Pacific Institute, Arakawa went to work in the family

enterprise, eventually rising to the position of president/general manager of the famous Waipahu

store. He and his family members oversaw expansion of the facility into a major department

store that still retained its original “country store” identity. In 1959, he was honored as a Hawaii

Father of the Year. He is survived by his wife, Rena S.; his daughter, Mrs. Curtis (Dawn IZUMI)

Wade; his brothers. Takemi, Shigemi and Goro Arakawa; his sisters, Mrs. Teishi (Okiyo)

Tengan and Mrs. Horace (Joan T.) Taba; and grandchildren, Ian and Miki. A memorial service
