FEBRUARY 2014 Volume 1, No. 16 CAMARILLO BRANCH

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Dear AAUW Camarillo Members

Thank you for your support of our Branch and Inter-Branch activities in January.

Our January general meeting with Dr. Gayle Hutchinson was both interesting and

inspiring. And the IBC luncheon was well attended and enjoyed by the

attendees. I salute Diana Dingler for her outstanding work in making both of

those events so successful.

Our Saturday breakfast Meet & Greets continue to be well attended, and to include

several potential new members. Thanks for bringing your friends and other

interesting people to these gatherings!

Many of our members were among the hundreds of people at the memorial service for

dear Norma Maidel. Our Janet Lindgren spoke on behalf of AAUW of the many

friendships she had here and the dedicated support Norma gave our organization and

its goals of education and equality. Others spoke of her contributions to CSUCI,

the Foreign Affairs Council, and Somis School. Her family members all testified

to her sterling qualities and the love they had for her. It was a lovely sendoff

for an amazing lady who led an exemplary life. We will miss her very much.

Our Branch has established a scholarship fund in the name of Norma Maidel. If you

wish to contribute to the award for this year, please send a check soon to our

Treasurer. We have also selected Norma to be the Named Grant Honoree for this

year.

In February we are looking forward to an interesting program about Writing your

Own History. There are also a couple of openings for the theatre trip on February

22nd. We need your support for the upcoming Knowledge Bowl, and are still seeking

someone to manage the costume collection. See inside for more information on all

of these.

The Executive Board meeting in February will be on Feb 10th at the home of Sarah

Thierriault. Branch members are welcome to attend, if interested.

Yours truly,

Vanessa

50th ANNIVERSARY PLANNING MEETING

The Planning Committee for the 50th Anniversary event will be meeting on Monday Feb 3 at

7p at home of Jan Ackerman. All interested persons welcome.

BYLAWS AMENDMENT

Our Branch has been contacted by the Headquarters AAUW organization and instructed to change our

bylaws to bring certain legalistic portions into conformance with the standard verbiage. They

deal with the definitions of the different classes of Members (individual, partner, affiliate).

The Branch committee has approved these changes, and as they are "required" we do not actually

have to take a vote of the members to adopt them. I'm also reluctant to take two whole pages of

the Beacon to write out something of such limited interest.

Therefore, I will email the proposed changes to members on February 1st, and all interested

parties should print and read them. The material will also be presented at the FEBRUARY 19th

meeting, and a vote of concurrence will be taken, provided we have a quorum of at least 18 members

attending.

CAMARILLO BRANCH GENERAL MEETING

DANA TIBBITS

Writer and Personal Historian

7:00 p.m.

At the home of

As a graduate of UCLA, Dana became involved in public relations and corporate communications for

30 years. Later, she turned her professional focus to the art, craft, and preservation of life legacies

and personal history. She is a firm believer in the power of the true story to shape the way we see

our lives and speak to our culture. Our stories connect us to one another, creating vital links

between individuals and generations. With that in mind, please join us for a presentation by Dana

where she will teach us how to organize and write our personal histories for family use or whatever

use you have in mind. Remember, your journey is your legacy. It is important to note that many

school children are now being asked to write a brief family history as part of their school

assignment.

Volunteers are needed to help with the annual Knowledge Bowl competition in March.

We need about 12 people to be question readers, judges & timers. No experience is necessary. This competition

features high school students from all over Ventura County competing in a round-robin quiz bowl tournament

similar to Jeopardy. AAUW Camarillo has been sponsoring this competition since 1964 and it is always a fun

and lively event.

Please let me know if you are available for any of the dates. You do not have to commit to all three dates.

WE REMEMBER NORMA

October 13, 1938 - December 25, 2013 We celebrate the life, love and friendship of

Norma Jo Maidel. Born on October 13, 1938, Norma was the only child of local artist,

Minalee White, and successful businessman, Charles W. White. She graduated from

Pomona College where she met and married Mark Maidel, her soul mate of 53 years. She

was a teacher in WA, Santa Monica, Malibu and Somis. She was an education consultant

and dedicated her life to philanthropy and education well into her retirement. Norma was

involved with numerous organizations including: World Affairs Council, American

Association of University Women, Political Caucus, and Cal State University Channel

Islands. Norma and Mark traveled the world and shared their knowledge. Norma is

survived by her loving husband and best-friend, Mark, "son" Terry Walby; sister-in-law

Joan Neuhaus; nieces: Suzanne Neuhaus, Catherine Hansen, Caroline Neuhaus Wesley;

"grandsons" and great nieces and nephews. Norma will be missed greatly by her family,

friends and community. A Celebration of Life will be held at the Serra Center, adjacent to

Padre Serra Church, at 5205 Upland Road, Camarillo, 93012 on January 7, 2014 at 1 PM.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Norma Maidel Scholarship Fund for

CSUCI, in care of AAUW Camarillo, P.O. Box 862, Camarillo, 93010 or to a charity of

your choice . In the words of Kahlil Gibran, "You give but little when you give of your

STORE SAFE SUPPORTS AAUW WIH

We are delighted to report that we have a new friend of

the Branch. Store Safe, which is located at 241

Camarillo Ranch Road, has donated a storage space to

the Branch to be a place to store the costumes for the

Women in History program. This makes the

management of this project much easier (we have a

separate storage space for the props used). Still looking

for a PERSON to work in this area....

Great Decisions

The Great Decisions group will meet on Wednesday, February 26, from 6-7:30 pm at Linda Cohenour's

home, XXXXXXX The February topic will be "Israel and the US": Modern Israel’s struggles with the Palestinians have turned what was meant as a safe haven for Jews into the

center of a decades-long conflict. The U.S. has stepped in as Israel’s ally due to the two countries’ shared values, providing years of unparalleled military and diplomatic support. But now those ties are being

tested. The Arab Spring, Iran’s nuclear ambitions, failed peace talks, and Israel’s own decision to give Washington the cold shoulder have put new strains on the 65-year-old “special relationship.” Join us - no

experience necessary - for a related video and discussion.

From: Jeanne Adams

Subject: Our Theatre Party and Catered Dinner, Saturday, February 22nd

Just an enthusiastic reminder that our tickets for Noises Off are for the 2:00

pm matinee at the Rubicon Theatre, 1006 E. Main St., , Ventura.

Fifty-five of us have purchased tickets for this afternoon of hilarious,

professional theatre, sumptuous food, wine, and very convivial company. I’ve given the

Box Office a master list of our group’s theatre goers and they will issue tickets –with

your names on them - to you at Will-Call as you enter the Main Street doors.

The Rubicon doesn’t have a parking lot – not even for staff and cast –so please do

allow some time to find your spot to park on the streets surrounding the Rubicon.

Carpooling is eagerly encouraged!

A few folks have asked about our dinner menu so here it is so that you can

prepare your taste buds:

Caesar Salad

Tortellini Alfredo with Broccoli

Macadamia Crusted Chicken

Rosemary Garlic Focaccia

Noises Off Cake

Answer to puzzles (Located on page 6)

#1 88 keys on piano

a picture is worth a 1000 words

13 stripes on the American flag

2 wheels on a bicycle

an octagon has 8 sides

1 hit wonder.

#2 1/3. (Surprised?!)

You might initially think that the answer is 1/2, however, it isn't.

Before I tell you anything, all you know is I've flipped two coins, and the possible outcomes are:

HH, HT, TH, TT

I now tell you that there was at least one head, which eliminates TT, leaving three possibilities. Of these three

possibilities, only 1 allows the second head: HH. So the probability is 1/3. QED.

The AAUW Santa Clarita Valley Branch needs help! They are having their first Authors Lunch called the Book Lovers Luncheon and are having trouble selling the tickets. They would love to see members from other branches attend if at all possible. Rebecca Corona-Nickerson 661 310 2311

HELP WITH BRIGHTER HORIZONS

The Thousand Oaks Branch has asked for some assistance with their Brighter

Horizons project, which will be Saturday March 8 at Cal Lutheran

University. Brighter Horizons is a career-day event encouraging math, science and

technology for 5th to 9th grade students. T.O. Branch needs help as

receptionists/guides on the day, and also for "hostesses" who will guide and

assist various speakers. If you can help with this worthwhile AAUW project,

contact Linda Pochter or [email protected]
