Sagayams father was a farmer and his mother ahousewife. He was the youngest of five brothersand he studied at a Tamil-medium panchayatschool.

The family home overlooked a 50-acre mangogrove. Playing with his friends one day under thetrees, hed found ripe fruits which had fallen from

the tree, which the children collected and tookhome to their mothers. Sagayams mother wasfurious, she made him throw the fruit even whenhe protested that nobody had seen him and thateveryone else had done the same thing . Justbecause all the others are doing a wrong thing itdoes not become right, she told him a lessonthat the adult Sagayam repeats like a mantra.

Sagayam is now considered one of the mosthonest IAS officers. In his 20 years of service hehas been transferred 19 times. He is the first IASofficer in the state to make his assets public - abank balance of Rs 7,172 and a house in Maduraiworth Rs 9 lakh.

P. Kalyanasundaram, is a gold medallist in library science,he is also an MA in literature and history. He worked for 35

years as a librarian in a College in Tuticorin district. He has also donated his body and eyes to the TirunelveliMedical College.

Ever since he got a job as a librarian in Tuticorin, he hascontributed all his salary, pension benefits and ancestralproperty to social welfare. He contributed his pension fundto the Collector's Fund.

He now heads an organization Paalam which serves as abridge between donors and beneficiaries: it collects money

and materials from those willing to donate and distributethem among the weaker sections. The International Biographical Centre, Cambridge, has

honoured him as `one of the noblest of the world', while theUnited Nations Organisation adjudged him as one of theOutstanding People of the 20th Century'. An Americanorganisation has also selected him as the `Man of theMillennium .

Since 2006, 15.3 million TV sets have been purchased to give away asfreebies, costing taxpayers more than $773 million.

A Farmer in Tamil Nadu returned his TV to his District collector and insisted hecould take care of his entertainment and let the money spent on Free TV spenton providing basic amenities to people of Tamil Nadu.Subramaniam Balaji, a Chennai-based lawyer felt that everything getssacrificed education, hospitals, social security, infrastructure for the sake ofFree TV and filed a petition to ban Free TV distribution with the electionCommission.Finally in 2011 the election commission banned distribution of free TV.Do not accept anything which you have not earned. You will end up paying forit in some other way.

Narayanan Krishnan ,an award-winning chef with a five-star hotel group, short-listed for an elite job in Switzerland.

Krishnan was visiting a temple in the south Indian city of Madurai in 2002 when hesaw the man under a bridge eating his own excreta. Haunted by the image,Krishnan quit his job within the week and founded his nonprofit Akshaya Trust in2003.

annual Pongal festival celebrated on the first Tuesdayof the Tamil month Thai.

Though community members are settled in differentparts of the world, they converge annually at thevillage to celebrate the festival.

Every year, we assemble in this temple as per ourcentury-old tradition. This year, 895 families scatteredacross the globe have arrived, said S.V. Ramasamy,a native of this village, now settled in Madurai.

Aravindhavalli, a resident of Triplicane was marriedwhen she was in class IX, and was part of a large,

joint family. For many years she was completelyimmersed in daily chores.

But with dedication she studied upto BA in Music. After death of her husband, whose wish was to make

her wife a doctrate , she decided to purse her PhD. Aravindhavallis research is on the music of

Thirumangai Alvar, the last of the 12 Alvar saints ofsouth India.

She completed her PhD at the age of 73 in 2013. Age is no bar for continuning education. Always keep

the PDS, they were detained under the provision toprevent black marketing.

Black marketing, hoarding of grains causesshortage of food grains and high price of foodgrains making it less accessible for poor peopleand makes them suffer.
