    About us

    The need to grow more food was felt during the 19th Century because of the

    increasing pressure of population. According to the recommendation of Famine

    Commission(1881) Agriculture !epartment was established in 188". #or$ started

    with the aim of helping the rural community to achie%e higher producti%ity in

    agriculture. Agriculture and &and 'ecords !epartments were functioning togethertill 19. After getting encouraging results in an e*ort made during 191+,1- to stop

    soil loss r /itting the then Agriculture !irector started soil conser%ation wor$ from

    1900.

    Agriculture !epartment too$ up %arious land de%elopment acti%ities with the

    enactment in 190 and subse2uent enforcement of &and !e%elopment Act in 19".

    For the 3rst time in 19" the then 4o%ernment prepared a comprehensi%e

    Agriculture 5olicy considering the problems in agriculture and allied sectors.

    According to this policy emphasis was gi%en on use of water as irrigation for

    agricultural crops.

    The post independence period from 19+ to 19-+ is recogni6ed as pre 4reen

    'e%olution period. !uring this period se%eral schemes were launched to boost

    growth of agriculture sector. 5roduction of 2uality seeds through Talu$a 7eed Farms

    started during 19+. mphasis was gi%en on increase in irrigated area along with

    culti%ated area during this period. A special campaign was launched in 19-1,-0 to

    encourage use of chemical fertili6ers.

    !e%elopment of hybrid %arieties of di*erent crops since 19-+,-- laid down the

    foundation of 4reen 'e%olution. Fi%e year plans following this period specially

    emphasi6ed de%elopment of agriculture. ala bunding wor$ was ta$en up along with

    land de%elopment wor$ by the department since 19 which led to increase in well

    and ground water le%el. :ntroduction of intensi%e agriculture comprising of large

    scale use of impro%ed seed fertili6ers pesticides and a%ailable water helped

    increase in agriculture production. &ateron considering the need for pro%iding

    guidance to the farmers for proper and ;udicious use of these inputs Training and

    e?cient and sustainable use of a%ailable resources is more important. To achie%e

    this commercial agriculture should be practiced. !i*erent schemes are

    implemented to increase agricultural production e=port promotion and to

    encourage the agro processing industry with a %iew to ta$e ad%antage of liberali6ed

    economy and 4lobal trade. Thus agriculture department is 3rmly stepping towards

    economic progress along with self su?ciency through agriculture and to achie%eimportant position in the global agriculture produce mar$et. The inno%ati%e

    horticulture plantation scheme under employment gurantee scheme implemented

    by the state is a part of this policy.

    Agriculture department considers farmer as the focal point and the whole

    department is organi6ed in such a fashion that a single mechanism is wor$ing to

    facilitate the farmer for adoption of ad%anced technology and sustainable use of

    a%ailable resources. %ery agriculture assistant wor$ing at %illage le%el has a

    ;urisdiction of three to four %illages with number of farmers limited to 8 to 9

    which facilitates more interaction for easier transfer of technology.

    Agriculture Assistant at %illage le%el underta$es soil conser%ation wor$ horticulture

    plantation and %arious e=tension schemes. @e is super%ised by Circle Agriculture

    ?cer at circle le%el. Administrati%e control laison with other departments

    monitoring and training programs etc. are facilitated by Talu$a Agriculture ?cer at

    talu$a le%el 7ub !i%isional Agriculture ?cer at sub di%ision le%el !istrict

    7uperintending Agriculture ?cer at district le%el and !i%isional Boint !irector at

    di%ision le%el. :n addition Agriculture ?cer at 5anchayat 7amiti le%el wor$ing

    under Agriculture !e%elopment ?cer illa 5arishad at district le%el also

    implement %arious agro,inputs related schemes.

    All the schemes implemented in the 3eld are super%ised technically and

    administrati%ely by respecti%e directorates of 7oil Conser%ation @orticulture

    =tension and Training :nputs and Duality Control 7tatistics onitoring and

    %aluation and 5lanning and Eudget at state le%el in the Commissionerate of

    Agriculture. Also separate sections are there for the stablishment and Accounts

    related matters.
