The Lincoln School community is pleased to welcome
you to the first AASCA Middle School Sportsmanship
Festival. This Festival is an opportunity for students
of the Central America region to come together and
share a weekend of friendly competition.
It is our hope that this inaugural festival serves to
motivate student athletes from each member institution
to participate in athletics and take part in the quality of
AASCA events as they progress throughout their high
school careers.
In addition to encouraging participation in four major
sports and in building friendships, we expect that the Festival will promote
sportsmanship and allow us to demonstrate and build character.
Competition teaches us how to win and lose and how to follow rules and play
fair. The famous UCLA basketball coach and winner of ten NCAA National
Championships, John Wooden, described proper athletic participation as “being
a good sport whether when you win or you lose. Not whining, complaining or
making excuses”.
This advice combined with treating each opponent with respect are lessons
that if learned at a young age will bring out the best in each of us and lead to
lifelong success. This weekend it is my hope that we all model and share Coach
Wooden´s wise words. Let´s take advantage of this wonderful event to help
instill these characteristics in our student athletes.
Finally, I want to thank Vic Caban, Lincoln School Athletic Director, and all of
the AASCA AD´s for their vision and commitment to all student athletes.
Have a great weekend!

Greetings from Lincoln School and Costa Rica!
It is a great pleasure to welcome you to the AASCA Middle School sportmanship festival, after much preparation to make this a memorable event, one that will provide you with the opportunity to develop team values, endurance, and friendships with fellow students from the region.
For us at Lincoln School, it is an honor to be hosts, and we wish to thank the people involved in organizing this festival for their commitment and enthusiasm.

Iris Prada-MoraSecondary School Principal
Dear AASCA Athletes, Coaches and Supporters:
It is my great pleasure to welcome everyone to the first ever
AASCA Middle School Sportsmanship Festival. Lincoln is honored to be able to host all of the visiting teams, their coaches and their supporters for this new AASCA event. The AASCA Middle School Sportsmanship Festival is an opportunity not only for students to compete in a high quality event against a variety of teams, but also an opportunity to get to meet fellow students from around the region. It is important to remember that this festival is about Sportsmanship; therefore I hope that all participants can appreciate this event for the opportunity it provides to develop grit, determination, team values, grace in defeat
and true friendship through sport. In this way, everyone can benefit and everyone wins.I wish all teams well and hope that participants, on and off the field, have an enjoyable and
successful time here in Costa Rica and at Lincoln School.

5 TIPS TO BOOST KIDS’ CONFIDENCE
IN S P O R T S
Don’t point out mistakes or losses. Stay away from the subject of avoiding mistakes from previous games. Say, “Have
fun! I know you’ll do your best!”
S T A Y P O S I T I V E !
T H E I R B E S T I S E N O U G H !Convey that you love and appreciate your athletes no matter how they perform. Sometimes, kids feel that in order to feel loved and appreciated, they need to
perform well all the time.
D O N ’ T O V E R - C O A C H !
Don’t over-coach your athlete or over-analyze your child’s state of mind or past performances. Less is better before a game. Keep your comments brief, supportive
and positive.
N O E X P E T A T I O N S !Be careful of saying things like, “I want you to score four goals today!” Or, “I know you can beat her to the finish line.” This puts negative pressure on young athletes.
K E E P I T F U N !
Focus on ensuring your children have fun. Keep it light. Remind them about the people or events that make sports fun for them.
Kids just want to have fun!
