AACHEN, GERMANYAachen has been around for millennia. The Romans nursed their war wounds and stiff joints in the steaming waters of Aachen’s mineral springs, but it was Charlemagne who put the city firmly on the European map. The emperor, too, enjoyed a dip now and then, but it was more for strategic reasons that he made Aachen the geographical and political capital of his vast Frankish Empire in 974 – arguably the first empire with European dimensions.Today, Aachen should be on any visitor’s itinerary. It is still a quintessentially international city, and has a unique appeal thanks to its location in the border triangle with the Netherlands and Belgium. And Charlemagne’s legacy lives on in the stunning Dom, which in 1978 became Germany’s first Unesco World Heritage Site as well as the new Centre Charlemagne. The town is a real pleasure for the pedestrian. The streets invitingly beckon the casual stroller, the lounger. The health cures and the conferences are never far apart, and there is always a worthwhile diversion.Aachen turns apparent contradictions into a sparkling entity. A metropolis nestling in natural surroundings, with a southern germanic atmosphere, an historic tradition and all the allure of modern living. Is this promising too much? Come and see for yourself!

AACHEN UASThe FH Aachen University of Applied Sciences was founded in 1971 after the merger of several technical colleges and vocational training centres. Thereby, it looks back on a more than 100-year-old practice-oriented educational tradition.Theory and practice are closely linked up during the entire course of study. The close connection with professional practice that the more than 230 professors and approximately 700 employees maintain in teaching and research guarantees a professionally qualifying and scientifically sound course of study.More than 12,000 students benefit from this. The FH Aachen University of Applied Sciences offers them a first-rate education in modern and trendsetting professions. Close cooperations with regional and international business enterprises as well as renowned research establishments such as the research centre Jülich (FZJ) are reflected in the quality of the courses offered: At the FH Aachen new job requirements are seen as a chance to constantly adjust and expand the curriculum in terms of content. At present, prospective students can choose from 53 Bachelor’s and 22 Master’s degree programmes in engineering sciences, business studies and design. Additionally, some degree programmes are offered as dual and extra occupational degree programmes.

More on Cost of Living in Aachen

The largest provider of student hostels in Aachen is the Studentenwerk. Here you can live reasonably cheap and also get to know new people easily.Private accommodation is also available, this is organised by the student themselves however Extraraum is an initiative of the city of Aachen and its universities. As you are in the most western corner of Germany, you may also consider living in Belgium or in the Netherlands. The rent there is to an extent cheaper than in Aachen, even though for foreign students there are some additional formal hurdles to overcome.
