Alaska Peninsula – Dog Salmon River LodgeOn May 3rd, the crew arrived to open up the lodge for the spring season. The runway was in great shape and ready for Rick tostart hauling supplies.

The remaining guides and bear hunters arrived, only to find wind and fog. We had 15 people at the main lodge, waiting for the weather to clear. Finallyeveryone was out to the spike camps and ready to bear hunt the next morning.

Hunting was harder than on a normal year due to the early spring, 4 days of rain and warm weather. Grass was knee deep and the leaves came out, makingit hard to see bears below snowline.

Dennis Geoghegan took the first bear on May 15th, followed by Wayne Hott on the 16th. The largest bear was taken by Joe Randazzo on the 17th, followedby brother Anthony on the 18th. Hank Mazzola took his bear on the 21st, while waiting on the airplane to fly him back to base camp. Just never give up.

The second group of hunters came in and Rob Bradley took another 10' bear on the 25th, along with Richard Wesner. Robbie Danek took his 9'2" bearon the 26th and Glenn Sweeney took his bear on the 30th. At least 3 bears over 10' were seen, but were high on the mountains, out of range chasing sows.

We have continued to improve the Dog Salmon River Lodge, and it remains one of the only lodges in Alaska where you can walk from camp and shoot a 60" moose, or a 10' brown bear and sleep in cabins with heaters and electric lights. At the lodge we have a main cabin, 2 client cabins, a guide's bunkhouse, shower house, storage building and a meat and skinning shed/shop and 2 weatherports. We also have cell and satellite phone service at the lodge. Fishing is always great in the fall with Silver Salmon, Dolly Varden Trout and Arctic Char caught right at the lodge.

Our hunting area is approximately 550 square miles (over 352,000 acres) in size. With an area this large we utilize up to 12 spike camps, located throughoutthe entire area. With over 120 miles of coastline, and 24 salmon streams, there are many great areas to hunt in this concession.

This season was the 29th year that I have owned, operated the Dog Salmon River Lodge and hunted this area. Thanks again to all of you who arrived asstrangers and went away as friends, after sharing experiences that will never be forgotten.

Comments: I would like to recommend this hunt to a friend without hesitation. The remote location affected some "comfort aspects" but outfitter maximizes everypossibility to ensure a memorable experience. Originally booked as a 15-day hunt,I had luck on the seventh day. Guide Jerry Starkey was totally focused on every aspectof the hunt: a functional and safe camp, locating bears to evaluate, and ensuring I wascomfortable and well fed. Outfitter Brent Jones / AAA Alaskan Outfitters provides thecomplete experience and service. His emphasis on hunter preparation, travelcoordination, comfort and equipment in camps and quality staff are as good as I've seenin my hunting experience.
