System OverviewYour navigation system is a highlysophisticated location system with vocontrol that uses satellites and a mapdatabase to show you where you are ato help guide you to a desireddestination.

The navigation system receives signafrom the global positioning system(GPS), a network of 24 satellites in oraround the earth. By receiving signalfrom several of these satellites, thenavigation system can determine thelatitude, longitude, and elevation of

your vehicle. In addition, a gyroscopiyaw sensor and a vehicle speed sensoin your vehicle keep track of thedirection and speed of travel at all tim

    Navigation System 5

IntroductionThe navigation system applies location, direction, and speed information to the

maps and calculates a route to thedestination you enter. As you drive tothat destination, the system providesmap and voice guidance.

The navigation system is easy to use.The locations of many places of business and entertainment are alreadyentered in the system. You can selectany of them as a destination by using theInterface Dial or voice control.

There are several ways to enter adestination, such as by point of interest(POI), by address, by phone number, and by selecting it from the map. Thelast 50 destinations are saved for reuseat a later date. The system also allowsyou to store a home address to simplifyreturning home from your destination.

Accessories PrecautionsIf you have rear window tintinginstalled, be aware that if the tint hasmetallic properties, it can seriouslydegrade or prevent GPS reception. Thisis because the GPS antenna is located onthe passenger's side of the rear shelf.

If you plan to install electroniccomponents, such as radar detectors, vehicle tracking devices, remotestarters, additional amplifiers, or otheraudio components, ensure that they arenot located near the navigation controlunit in the trunk, near the navigation

display in the dash, or near the GPSantenna on the passenger's side of therear shelf. Signal noise emanating fromthese devices can cause intermittentdisruption of the navigation system.

Important Safety InformationThe navigation system can distract yoattention from the road if you focus othe screen or operate the systemscontrols while driving.

Enter as much information as possiblinto the system before you begindriving, or when the vehicle is stoppeThen, as you drive, listen to the audioinstructions and use voice commandswhen possible.

    6 Navigation System

While driving, do not look at the screenor operate the system controls for morethan a second or so at a time, and onlyafter deciding you can do so safely. Pullto the side of the road if you need moretime to look at the screen or operate thecontrols.

The navigation system is designed toprovide route information to help you

reach your destination. However, thisroute guidance may sometimes conflictwith current road conditions such asstreet closures, road construction, detours, and out-of-date map data.

Additionally, the system itself hascertain limitations (see page105).Therefore, you must verify the audioand visual route information providedby the system by carefully observing theroadway, signs and signals, etc. If youare unsure, proceed with caution.Always use your own good judgment, and obey traffic laws while driving.

    Map Overview

Curren t Street The current street on which your vehiis located appears at the bottom of themap screen (see page19). A messagesaying Not on a digitized road mayappear instead when you drive half amile away from a mapped road. Formore details, seeOff-road Tracking onpage62.

Verif ied/Unv erif ied Street Your navigation system has two kindof streets: verified (dark colored) and

unverified (light colored). Thedifferences between the two types of streets are contrasted in the chart onpage 7.

Using the navigation systemwhile driving can take yourattention away from the road, causing a crash in which youcould be seriously injured orkilled.

Only operate system controlswhen the conditions permit youto safely do so.

    Introduction

Verified streets (dark colored) Unverified streets (light colored)

Whendisplayed These roads are found within metropolitan areas, andinclude interstate freeways and major roads connectingcities. These roads are found in rural areas, and typically includeresidential streets away from the center of a town.

Street color Shown on daytimemap screen as black or red, such asinterstate freeways.Shown on the daytimemap screen as light brown.

    Map quality

The database vendor has verified these streets.

Information like turn restrictions, average speed, andwhether it is a one-way street have been gathered andused when creating your route to a destination.

These streets have not been verified by the database vendor

The system does not contain information on one-way streetturn restrictions, or the roads average speed. They are showon the map for reference and may have errors in map locatinaming, and address range.

    Routingdifferences

While driving to your destination, the displayed routeline is solid blue. The system provides voice and mapguidance to your destination.

Your route line is either a blue dotted vector line, or a daspink/blue line. For information on selecting this option, androuting differences, seeUnverified Area Routing on page87.

CautionsThere are no pop-up boxes urging extra caution duringa route. However, because roads constantly change, you are urged to use common sense, and always obeyposted traffic restrictions.

Regardless of whether the user chooses route guidance, theare cautionary screens before and during the route urging thuser to be extra cautious, and obey all traffic restrictions. SeUnverified Area Routing on page87.

    Guidance

For example: In a half-mile, make a right turn, if possible.Time anddistanceto go

The time and distance to go, displayed while en routeto a destination, is based on the average speed anddistance for the roads used for your route.

Because the average speed of these roads is not known, the and distance to go is based on a fixed average speed of 25 mph for these roads.

    Give a voice command.

Once the microphone picks up yourcommand, the system changes thedisplay in response to the command andprompts you for the next command.Using theNAVI TALKbutton, answerthe prompts as required.

If the system does not understand acommand or you wait too long to give a

Anytime you are unsure of what voicecommands are available on a screen, you can always say Help. The systemwill then read the list of availablecommands to you.

When you give a command, the systemgenerally either repeats the command asa confirmation or asks you for furtherinformation. If you do not wish to hearthis feedback, you can turn it off. However, hearing the feedback willfamiliarize you with the way the systemexpects commands to be phrased. SeetheVoice Recognition Feedback setting in SETUP.
