The World Health Organization (WHO) and World Bank Group has launched a new mechanism, Global

Preparedness Monitoring Board , to strengthen global health security through monitoring and regular reporting of

preparedness to tackle outbreaks, pandemics, and other emergencies with health consequences.

The board will have headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland and co-chaired by Gro Harlem Brundtland, former

Prime Minister of Norway and former WHO Director-General, and Elhadj As Sy, Secretary General of the

International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies.

The Union Cabinet has given its approval for extending the investment limit from Rs 7.5 lakhs to Rs 15 lakhs under

the Pradhan Mantri Vaya Vandan Yojana (PMVVY). The time limit for subscription under PMVVY has also been

extended from 4th May 2018 to 31st March, 2020. It will enable upto Rs.10000 Pension per month for Senior

Citizens.

The government has approved the continuation of the Umbrella Scheme, Green Revolution – Krishonnati Yojana

in agriculture sector beyond 12th Five Year Plan for the period from 2017-18 to 2019-20 with an expenditure of

Rs.33,269.976 crore from central government for three financial years ending March 2020.

The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs has approved the proposal for renaming and restructuring of Multi-

sectoral Development Programme (MsDP) as Pradhan Mantri Jan Vikas Karyakram (PMJVK) during the remaining

period of the 14th Finance Commission.

The Cabinet has given its nod to continuation of Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana beyond 12th Five Year

Plan for a period 2017-18 to 2019-20. The financial outlay for this purpose is Rs 14,832 crore. Under this 20 new

AIIMS and upgradation of 73 medical colleges will be undertaken.

The President of India, Shri Ram Nath Kovind, chaired the first meeting of the National Committee for the

Commemoration of the 150th Birth Anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, at Rashtrapati Bhavan on May 2, 2018. The

Committee has a total of 125 members, including 116 from India and 9 international members.

14 Indian cities have been figured in a list of 20 most polluted cities in the world in terms of PM2.5 levels in 2016,

according to the data released by the WHO (May 2, 2018). The Indian cities that registered very high levels of

PM2.5 pollutants were Delhi, Varanasi, Kanpur, Faridabad, Gaya, Patna, Agra, Muzaffarpur, Srinagar, Gurgaon,

Jaipur, Patiala and Jodhpur.

For the first time in the country, the renewable energy sector( solar, wind and bio-fuel) has added more capacity

(11,788 MW) than the conventional power (thermal, gas and nuclear) which stood at 9,505 MW in 2017-18

according to the data provided by Union Ministry of New and Renewable Energy.

The Union Government has announced to develop the country s biggest airport, after only to Mumbai, in Mopa

district of Goa which will benefit four coastal states in the western part of the country, Maharashtra, Karnataka,

Kerala and Goa.

The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has released draft of the National Telecom Policy (NTP) 2018,

named the National Digital Communications Policy, 2018. The policy would create 40 lakh new jobs by 2022; attract







$100 billion in investments into the sector in the next four years and ensure broadband speeds of 50 mbps for

every citizen by 2022.

The Minister of State for Development of North Eastern Region (I/C), Dr. Jitendra Singh announced that a North

Eastern Cultural and Information Centre will come up in Delhi soon.

Ministry of Water Resources, River Development and Ganga Rejuvenation has recently set up National Water

Informatics Centre (NWIC) in New Delhi as a repository of nation-wide water resources data and would be headed

by a Joint Secretary level officer.

The GST Council under the Chairmanship of Finance Minister Arun Jaitley has approved a simpler tax return filing

system in the 27th GST (Goods and Services Tax) Council meeting that would require a taxpayer to file only one

return every month compared to three a month under the earlier process. The new monthly return filing system

government will sanction Rs 2,000 crore for inland waterway on Godavari River.

Projects

The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs has approved three major infrastructure projects – new terminal

buildings at Guwahati, Chennai and Lucknow airports.

In order to boost the public transport system in Noida, the Union Cabinet has approved the extension of Delhi

Metro corridor from Noida City Centre to Noida Sector 62, covering a distance of 6.675 km at a cost of Rs 1,967

crore.

The Union Cabinet has approved setting up of a new All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) up under the

Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana (PMSSY) in Deoghar, Jharkhand at a cost of Rs. 1103 crore.

The Government has given in-principle approval for establishing a Central University by the name of Central

University of Andhra Pradesh in Janthaluru Village of Ananthapur District, Andhra Pradesh at a total cost of Rs. 450

crore.

The National Institute of Mental Health Rehabilitation (NIMHR) has been approved to be established in Bhopal as a

society under the Societies Registration Act, 1860 under the aegis of the Department of Empowerment of Persons

with Disabilities at an estimated cumulative cost of Rs. 179.54 crore in first three years.

The Union Health ministry has approved two schemes of the Odisha government for the establishment of two new

Government Medical Colleges in Balasore and Balangir districts of the state with 100 seats each, for the academic

year 2018-19 under the Centrally Sponsored Scheme Establishment of new medical colleges attached with existing

District/Referral Hospitals.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone of India s longest road tunnel and Asia s longest bi-

directional tunne Zojila tunnel on the Srinagar-Leh National Highway. The 14.2 kilometer tunnel tunnel is

scheduled to be completed in 5 years at an investment of Rs 6,809 crore. The tunnel will cut down the time taken

to cross Zojila pass from the present three and a half hours to just fifteen minutes.
