Addvantage
Member scheme 2018-2019
Our heritage. The British Council is the UK’s international organisation for cultural relations and
educational opportunities. We create friendly knowledge and understanding between
the people of the UK and other countries. We do this by making a positive contribution
to the UK and the countries we work with – changing lives by creating opportunities,
building connections and engendering trust.
We work with over 100 countries across the world in the fields of arts and culture,
English language, education and civil society. Last year we reached over 65 million
people directly and 731 million people overall including online, broadcasts and
publications. Founded in 1934, we are a UK charity governed by Royal Charter and a
UK public body.
Our work in English aims to bring high-quality language materials to every learner and
teacher who wants them. In developing and post-conflict countries, we teach English
and train teachers through radio, web and TV broadcasts. We offer more than three
million UK examinations worldwide, helping people gain access to trusted qualifications
to support their career and study prospects.
We have been in the Netherlands since 1946. The largest part of our work in the
Netherlands is the provision of UK examinations and qualifications.

Our work in cultural relations
In addition to examinations, we work with partners across the Netherlands to create innovative and high-performing joint
programmes. Our work in the area of cultural relations is aimed at building long lasting relationships with individuals and
organisations. We collaborate closely with partners to identify, design and implement specific activities in the field of arts,
education and society where the relationship with the UK can add significant value.
We share news and information about our cultural relations work with our Addvantage members on a regular basis. We run
the following programmes in the Netherlands:
Apeldoorn: British-Dutch Dialogue Conference
The annual conference is a forum where the most influential commentators, policymakers, politicians, academics, business
leaders and civil society representatives from both sides of the North Sea come together to pool ideas, share best practice
and create lasting relationships, alliances and networks. The conference is jointly organised by the British Council in the
Netherlands, the British Foreign and Commonwealth Office and the Netherlands Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
FameLab
FameLab is the international science communication competition for young scientists from Cheltenham Festivals and the
British Council. It has been running since 2014 in the Netherlands. FameLab helps young scientists acquire valuable skills to
communicate their work to non-scientific audiences.
Hoboken Lecture
The Hoboken Lecture is a partnership between the British Council, the Natural History Museum in Rotterdam and the Royal
