2017

Dear Friends,

As it happens, I’m writing this message on my fortieth wedding anniversary. Lori and I were married on July 17, 1977. That’s 14,610 days ago. (Yes, I even made sure to include the extra days from the leap years since then.)

We were young, she and I; twenty and twenty-two years old, respectively. Some probably thought, “too young.” Yet here we are, now, with five grown children, two grandchildren— and a still new Labrador Retriever puppy, as well.

We were married where we grew up: the San Francisco Bay Area (Marin County, none the less). From there, we went to Northeast Pennsylvania for three years for my seminary studies (the first set of them, that is.) Our first child was born there, in 1979. Graduation and ordination came in 1980. After some transitional assignments, I assumed my first pastorate in Pueblo, Colorado, where our daughter Rebecca was born. We came to Massachusetts (the first time) in 1984 to serve a parish in Maynard, where we stayed until 1991. During this time, I went to seminary again—and our three youngest children were born. It was all a busy time for the Lintons, that’s for sure.

I was an active duty Navy Chaplain from 1991 to 1994, serving at Naval Air Station, Memphis. (Yes, that’s Navy in Tennessee.) From 1994 untill 2000, we were in the greater Chicago orbit. It was during this period that Lori, I, and our children made the great transition to life and ministry in the Episcopal Church. I began ministry as an Episcopal priest in 1997. In 2000, we moved back West to serve in Ogden, Utah.

And in October 2009, we came to Church of the Holy Spirit, Orleans, to begin my service as your Rector. I did the math (with help!). As of today, our time here is 19% of our marriage’s -span: almost one fifth!

Yes, we’ve lived all over the place. So when we are asked, “What’s home, for you?” that’s a little hard to answer. Our children give very different answers to the question, “Where do you come from?”

I guess that one might say that our sense of home—of belonging—is a good deal more portable than that of many others. But we feel so very blessed to share life and fellowship with you here, in this lovely place, and with a very special congregation.

Forty years: a lot of living, growing up, learning, sharing. Many adventures—most of them good ones! So with our word of thanks to the CHS family, Lori and I pray God’s blessing for yet a new phase of life, growth, learning, and sharing—with each other, and with you.

Yours in Christ,

Adam +

LABYRINTH WALK - FRIDAY, AUGUST 11th - 10:00 a.m. in the Parish Hall Dr. Margaret Rappaport

Please join us in the Parish Hall to sit quietly, pray and meditate even when you don’t walk the labyrinth. All are welcome to participate in our parish labyrinth community.

Our monthly guided walks on the second Friday of each month continue in August with the theme, “Kindness”. The group will gather in the center of the labyrinth for opening reflections with Rev. Anne Koehler at 10:00 a.m.

Before the walk, a short commentary focusing on the nature of “kindness” and its importance for personal growth will be presented by Dr. Margaret Rappaport, a Veriditas-certified Labyrinth Facilitator. She will explore the lessons to be learned from the 41 synonyms and the 14 antonyms for “kindness” in English! “Kindness” (and lack thereof) will not be overlooked and cannot be undervalued.

Following those remarks, she will recognize Darlene T. Hagon who completed the Veriditas certification in June, 2017. Darlene will give a brief overview of her training by Rev. Lauren Artress, the founder of the Veriditas labyrinth movement in the United States and Europe. Our appreciation of Darlene’s achievement and her continuing commitment to being our Director of Music, Darlene T. Hagon will, as usual, offer selected meditative with music to accompany the walk.

Our medieval Chartres-style labyrinth will be candlelit and arrayed to strengthen the meditative experience.

Closing prayer and comments will conclude the walk.

Did you know the Month of August is HABITAT Cape Cod Month for The Church of the Holy Spirit?

*The Church of the Holy Spirit is committed to doing all it can to help provide affordable housing for those in need. *In August, we have offered to provide a Tuesday or Saturday lunch for the volunteers at the Chatham worksite. *Through the “Brewster Faith Build 2017-2018”, the churches in Brewster and surrounding towns are striving to provide $55,000 in support of one of six houses to be built on the Old Bassett Animal Farm off Tubman Road. *CHS has pledged $5,000 in support of the “Brewster Faith Build 2017”. Through our Outreach Mission, we have

made a generous $4,000 donation in support of this effort. It would be wonderful if we could close the gap and provide the remaining $1,000 from individual parishioner donations.

*On Sunday August 13th, there will be a brief Habitat Cape Cod update after the services. We recommend those planning to contribute to Habitat of Cape Cod this year to do so at this service. (Make your check payable to Habitat Cape Cod Brewster Build). We look forward to your participation in this effort.

FOOD 4 KIDS NEWS

Food 4 Kids has been operating at full capacity since the end of June serving eighteen different sites, or groups of children including large sites like Orleans or Wellfleet Recreation with as many as 100 kids each day in July, to small ones like Make Way for Kids, a summer preschool in Chatham with 10 children.

Every day, staff and volunteers arrive as early as 6:30 a.m. to start preparing the sandwiches in the church kitchen and organizing the snacks sent to each site. At 9:00, another group of energetic volunteers arrives downstairs to pack the food items into lunch bags and the bags into the red chilled coolers. A third group of brave volunteers then arrives to drive the coolers to each location from Provincetown to Dennis.

As the drivers and coolers depart, the staff at the church, Michelle, Anne Marie, Cian, and Carolyn, might have a few minutes to catch their breath when a fourth group of volunteers arrives to help prepare the food for the coming days. Drivers and coolers return in the early afternoon to be cleaned and made ready for the next day. PHEW!

Amazingly, F4K employs only two full-time employees, two part-time assistants, and a handful of paid site supervisors who deliver and serve the meals.

As you can see, our volunteers are absolutely invaluable to the program. They are hard-working, cheerful, and loyal. BIG thanks to all of you. We could not do this needed program without you!

Be sure to visit our new website, Food4KidsCapeCod.org for an up-to-date list of our sites, menus and pictures of volunteers, staff and the children we serve.

AN INTERVIEW WITH SARAH KIMBALL by Brooke Eaton-Skea

Sarah graduated from Sturgis Charter Public School in 2014, visited St. Thomas in the Virgin Islands with her family and entered Massachusetts Maritime Academy that Fall. The transition to college was difficult for Sarah, due in part to the loss of freedom she experienced in a military environment and also due to the effect it had on her fellow students, “…they were very angry… lots of negative energy around.”

She worked hard to overcome this and made it through a very difficult first semester. Another key factor in this was meeting her friend, Casey. “If I hadn’t met him, I wouldn’t be at Mass Maritime.” This relationship developed over time into a romantic one that she clearly treasures. She said, “I know that God brought us together.”

Her college career has included a great deal of travel. She completed her first “sea term” in Puerto Rico followed by an internship on the Panama Canal. “That was really hard. I didn’t speak the language but I learned how to communicate with the people and learned a lot about myself…nothing will be given to me…I have to make my own way.”

The following year, Sarah did an internship teaching computer skills at the Ol Pejeta Conservancy, a 90,000 acre wildlife conservancy in Central Kenya. “Everyone there spoke English in addition to Swahili, but communication was still difficult because I was never sure what they knew or what they still needed to learn.” After going home for two weeks, she travelled to Shanghai Maritime Academy where she studied international maritime business. While in China, she travelled into the mountains and to Beijing. She visited some sacred temples but “felt no God-energy there.” Spending time in China was eye-opening for Sarah: “ I learned that I am a very privileged white American girl...I took so much for granted before traveling abroad…living in the US is such a gift…so much freedom here—and clean air!”

Sarah is working at the Pump House Surf Shop in Orleans this summer. She will be back at Mass Maritime in September for her senior year and will graduate with a BS in International Maritime Business.

What are her future plans? “Casey just joined the Marines. He’s at Officer Candidates School in Quantico, VA now but will be home [at his grandmother’s home in Eastham] for a while this summer. I don’t know where he’ll go next ,but after I graduate, I will find a job that allows me to be near him. I know it!”

Enjoy this month’s article about Fr. Ken and Ruth Campbell - By Sue Sasso

Fr. Ken and Ruth Campbell will be married for 50 years on August 26, 2017. I visited them in their lovely home at the end of Peace Lane in South Orleans, a fitting spot for their life’s faith journey together.

Ken was born in Hyannis and is a true native Cape Codder. Childhood summers were spent in Wellfleet at his grandparents’ home on Gull Pond. One Sunday, Ken joined a visiting friend of his older brother who was attending Sunday service at CHS. That one service made quite the impression on young Ken. He always remembered the liturgy. Fast forward to his college days in Boston, he was still a bit of an agnostic… but then he met and fell in love with Ruth Williams, a Roman Catholic who lived and practiced her strong faith.

Ruth Williams Campbell grew up in Brookline outside of Boston and was raised Roman Catholic. Somewhere along the way, she learned she loved working with children and was a nanny many summers. This love rolled into getting an education degree and 5 years as a kindergarten teacher in South Boston. She later became involved in Head Start. A rabid Boston Red Sox fan, on their first date, Ruth told Ken she was named for Babe Ruth and Ted Williams… (not true!) She took Ken to a Red Sox game on one of their earlier dates (tickets were 75 cents each) and he was shocked when she started screaming at the players and making a lot of noise!

Then, in the 1960’s Ken had the opportunity to march with Dr. Martin Luther King. Meeting Ruth and Dr. King, two faith-filled people, were seminal events that led Ken to a life of faith. After five years dating and with the advice of a Paulist priest in Boston, Ruth and Ken were married at All Saints Episcopal Church in Boston in 1967 while Ken went to seminary in Cambridge.

When he graduated, and one could say by divine providence, Fr. David White selected him to be his curate at The Church of the Holy Spirit. Ken and Ruth moved to Orleans in 1968 and Ken was ordained priest on May 26, 1970 at CHS, the only ordination ever performed at here. After 3 years as our Assisting Priest, Ken was asked to be Rector at St. Anne’s Church in North Billerica, MA where he and Ruth spent 9 years. They then were called to Wilbraham Church of the Epiphany where they remained for 24 years until Ken retired in 2004 and the Campbells moved back to their South Orleans home (bought in 1998) and became active CHS members again.

During his years of being a parish Rector, Ken was President of the Diocesan Standing Committee which administers canon law with the Bishop, and Chair of the Diocesan Social Justice and Interfaith commissions. He was also a Deputy to the General Convention in Phoenix, Arizona.

For Ken, CHS holds powerful memories of his first time here as a young boy, his ordination and the baptisms of two sons and a grandson. However, what is unique about CHS to Ken is that it is the only church he knows of that is always open! Our door has no lock! If you need a quiet special place to pray, the sanctuary is always open! The ‘open door’ at Holy Spirit also symbolizes for Ken our seeking to be a community of Christians who welcome all AND who go out the door into the world to stand with Christ and the poor, marginalized and oppressed.

For Ruth, CHS helped her find a ministry with children. When asked by Fr. White to be a Sunday School teacher, she resisted because she did not feel she knew enough about the Bible to teach. Fr. White told her, “It’s not what you know, it’s what you believe!” She has since been the Director of Christian Education at multiple parishes and has been all over the USA leading workshops for the Episcopal Church on child advocacy for all children, learning so much and meeting Episcopalians who have enriched her life beyond anything she could have imagined.

Ruth started the Food 4 Kids program at CHS in 2013, having done a similar program in W. MA in 1993. Ruth realized she has learned so much about this program that she is now mentoring other parishes and communities, including St. Mary’s in Barnstable and the St. Andrew’s Church on Martha’s Vineyard, on how to build a successful F4K program. Going forward, she plans to continue to mentor more parishes.

Retirement means Ken and Ruth have time to spend with their three children and five grandchildren, all who love to visit Cape Cod. For both of them retirement is also a whole new life chapter doing ecumenical, interfaith and social justice activities and learning to work with others with shared values. Ken chaired the CHS Overnights of Hospitality and Justice and Peace committee plus brought Fair Trade products to our parish. He is a Supply Priest to more than a dozen Cape Cod parishes and has held adult education classes and is currently the Chair of the Nauset Interfaith Association, an organization that addresses key issues in our Cape Cod Community. Through these contacts, Ken has been able to discern how God’s sprit is driving positive change and finding common ground with other faith communities. Ruth keeps busy as a member of the CHS Church School Team and a Teacher including Veggie Tales plus evangelizing for food programs for all kids in all communities.

To sum it up, through Ken’s falling in love with Ruth and marching with Dr. King, the Campbells have seen the connection of the world through Christ that developed into their shared spiritual journey. This is both an inward and outward journey but on one road, going in different directions or different levels at times, but the same journey. It’s like the cross –the horizontal and vertical arms of the cross represent their relationships with people and God.

Peace++

THE CHURCH OF THE HOLY SPIRIT, ORLEANS July 20, 2017 Vestry Meeting Highlights

Steve Koehler, Treasurer, presented some talking points in preparation for the vestry meeting with The Rev. Canon Parnell to be held in August to discuss our ongoing concerns about Diocesan Assessment levels.

Melissa Keeffe-Jones gave the combined results of all the Re-imagining meetings, forums, and questionnaires and Fr. Adam presented the initial draft of the Reimagining 2017 Action Plan for preliminary discussion by the vestry. Once the Vestry reviews and approves the preliminary Action Plan, it will be presented to the parish later this year for further input and discussion before we commence implementing the plan .

Fr. Adam reported that the Worship Committee has been reactivated.

Matt Thompson announced that new stove is complete and, once it passes inspection, will finally be ready for use.

After very careful consideration, and upon the unanimous recommendation of the Finance Committee, the Vestry unanimously voted to loan approximately $15,000 to Adam+ and Lori Linton toward a down payment that will enable them to purchase a retirement home in Montana. Retirement is still some years off, but the ideal property is available now. This loan will be re-paid via payroll deduction over 24 months, at the same interest rate as the remainder of their mortgage. A lawyer will be engaged to issue a contract and promissory note setting out all terms and conditions. (Adam+ turned over the chair to Warden Cynthia Murray and excused himself from the meeting for the discussion and vote on the matter.)

The Wardens made this proposal to the Lintons; it was not their idea. Adam+ has turned down his TCC mandated salary increases three times during his tenure. The Finance Committee and Vestry agreed it was the right thing to do. If you have any questions, please speak to Rick Paris or Cynthia Murray.

Respectfully submitted, Victoria Hutchens, Clerk

COME ONE—COME ALL WHO LOVE TO SING! Open Organizational Choir Rehearsal Lori Linton, Choir Director

Would you like to have a wonderful time singing praise to God while making a valuable and beautiful contribution to the worship life of our church family? Our Summer Choir will be wrapping up at the end of August. We are looking forward to our Fall Organizational Rehearsal to be held on Wednesday September 6th from 7:00-8:30 p.m. This is the perfect opportunity for anyone who has wanted to be a part of our choir to “just come and check us out”. You will be glad if you do! We will be meeting in the church sanctuary…. Just follow the joyful (yet heavenly) noise!
