In the summer of 2013, Xavier Harvey (“X”) first connected with ASP as he was transitioning out of a DYS residential facility. When we first met X, it was clear he was brimming with talent and dedi-cation. At the same time, he clearly enjoyed questioning authority and intentionally playing the antagonist in certain situations. We embraced all of that energy, and X quickly decided that ASP was a good match for him. Since that summer, he has participated in every youth project, giving powerful performances in roles such as Prospero (The Tempest), Benedick (Much Ado About Nothing), Othello (Othello), and Shylock (The Merchant of Venice). More importantly, X has developed into one of our most influential youth leaders – having stepped up as a youth representative at high visibility ASP events such as Arts Advocacy Day at the State House, writing and directing two youth-driven film/Shakespeare projects, performing alongside Yo-Yo Ma at our 10th anniversary gala, usher-ing at ASP professional productions, serving as assistant director in our 2014 and 2016 Summer Youth Intensives, and being a mentor that other young folks look up to.
In the future, X is hoping to start his own program that works with young people and the arts.
