Our 2016-2017 season marks an extraordinary year of partnerships, new creations, cross collaboration, Canadian and Europe tours, four Artists in Residence and our first Entrepreneur in Residence!

This Season begins in partnership with artists in residence Allen and Karen Kaeja. Together we will choreograph real people working in real businesses and Mayor Council to animate the story of our City and engage our community in a re-imaging of the downtown core.

We are deeply honoured to collaborate with the Mi’kmaq-Wolastoqey Centre for a special presentation of Ghosts of Violence as part of The Red Shawl Campaign in Fredericton. We have worked collaboratively to weave Indigenous culture and symbolism within the ballet to bring attention to the issue of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, and to honour these women and their families.

We are also privileged to co-present the ballet The Red Crowned Crane in partnership with the Greater Moncton Chinese Cultural Association performed by the fifty member Wuxi Song and Dance Theatre of China with choreography by Canadian Peter Quantz. This production is part of a national tour celebrating the 46th Anniversary of relations between the People’s Republic of China and Canada.

Our much loved ballet Phantom of the Opera will tour Eastern and Western Canada and in January Piaf will be performed in Belgium and France. This year we create a new version of the provocative story of passion, seduction and revenge Carmen performed with Symphony New Brunswick. We look forward to our work with visual artist in residence Suzanne Hill animating her new exhibit SINGULAR at the New Brunswick Museum. Two more artist in residence join us this year- independent dancer/artist Lucy May, and Satellite Théâtre, who are launching their first Season in New Brunswick.

We are absolutely thrilled to venture in to a cross collaboration with our first Entrepreneur in Residence in 2016-2017- serial hi-tech entrepreneur, engineer and innovator Jake Arsenault!

We invite you to join us for a spectacular year of artistry and creativity!

CARMENMAY 19 & 30JUNE 1

PART OF THE MONCTON, FREDERICTON AND SAINT JOHN SEASONS CAPITOL THEATRE / THE PLAYHOUSE / IMPERIAL THEATRE

CHOREOGRAPHY: Igor Dobrovolskiy / MUSIC: Georges Bizet

Atlantic Ballet Theatre of Canada is thrilled to announce our second collaboration with Symphony New Brunswick to present Carmen the ballet. Igor Dobrovolskiy takes a contemporary slant on the famous tale of the Gypsy.

Don José falls in love with Carmen and sacrifices everything to be with her. When Carmen becomes infatuated with Escamillo, the toreador, she loses interest in Don José whose love quickly turns to violent jealousy. The story of Carmen is one of passion, drama, love, tragedy all combined in such a way that one’s heart feels as though it might stop at any moment from sheer anticipation.

CHOREOGRAPHY: Igor Dobrovolskiy / MUSIC: Alfred Schnittke, Sergei Rachmaninoff

Atlantic Ballet Theatre of Canada is honoured to collaborate with the Mi’kmaq-Wolastoqey Centre for a special presentation of Ghosts of Violence as part of The Red Shawl Campaign.

This ballet has been creatively adapted to honour the Indigenous women of the Wabanaki Territory – the Mi’kmaq, Wolastoqiyik, and the Passamaquoddy. In the spirit of authentic reconciliation, Igor Dobrovolskiy, Co-Founder and Artistic Director Atlantic Ballet Theatre of Canada, and Susan Chalmers-Gauvin have collaborated with faculty and

volunteers to infuse Indigenous knowledge, culture and symbolism within Ghosts of Violence to bring attention to the issue of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and to honour these women and their families.

By weaving dance with Indigenous culture, music and language, Ghosts of Violence has embarked on an emotional expression of the Indigenous women we have lost.
