A week in the life of
Issue 9 - 10th November 2017
What a busy week we have had this
week. We were delighted to be joined by members of Worlaby Parish Council,
who kindly donated paint and spent the afternoon on Tuesday working with
every child in school to paint stones to create a giant poppy to be placed at the
memorial for Armistice. The children enjoyed this project and we saw some
wonderful creations. Thank you to Pam, Steve and Mel and Worlaby Rocks!
Anti-Bullying I was incredibly proud this week to accompany 3 of our Year 6 pupils and 5 former Worlaby Pupils to receive an award for anti-
bullying. The children were successful in achieving the Diana
Award for anti-bullying work they did in the academy over the last year. We had a great day at the awards ceremony which was held at Leeds College of music. The children were presented with their awards by Danny Jones from McFly and they also got to meet gold medal winning Paralympian Hannah Cockroft. They then spent the afternoon in workshops with the Diana Award charity volunteers. Finally, they thought about
their next project and created a social action plan. They are all a credit to Worlaby Academy and I was honoured to accompany them. Well done to Elliot, Daniel, George, Casey, Isabel C, Izzy, Macey and Bethany. Take a look at the following link to read the Diana Award roll of honour (page 89). http://diana-award.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/2017/07/2016-2017-Roll-of-Honour.pdf

CLASS 1
This week in Foundation we have had great fun learning to add, counting the total from both
groups to do this. The children have had fun doing this in their independent learning time too. We have also used the Numicon and Unifix to
match quantities, consolidating that the children know what each Numicon shape is worth.
In phonics we have learnt the sounds "f" and "ss" and the tricky words "I" and "in". We have enjoyed playing with the mud kitchen in
the outdoor area making "conker soup" and "chocolate milkshakes" and there has been some
excellent opportunities for the children's communication and language within this play. Please may I remind you how important it is to
send your child to school with their reading book and flash cards every day, this is essential for us
to be able to support and teach the children. We look forward to another exciting week!
Class 2
'Soldiers are real heroes'. This week in class 2
we have focussed on the significant annual British
event of Remembrance and how it is also
commemorated across the world. We have
discussed when it began and learned that it is
almost 100 years ago. We looked at some pictures
and watched some cartoon based clips on life in
the trenches in World War 1. We discussed how it
might have felt to be a soldier in World War 1 and
all the children produced some fantastic writing
about the time. Remembrance Day was the
subject of art as all the children created a poppy
by sewing parts together and made their own
medal. This must have prompted discussion from
the children at home as Oliver proudly shared his
daddy's medal from the army. We were all very
excited to see them, thank you for sharing them.
The children painted a stone with members of the
village and they will be put together near the
cenotaph in Worlaby as a special poppy for
Remembrance Sunday. In maths this week the
children have been completing addition and
subtraction and been learning it doesn't matter
which way you add numbers, the total is the same.
Year 2 have started to realise numbers in addition
and subtraction equations are linked and 3
numbers can be used to make 4 related equations.
The children's ball handling skills are improving
and we have started to play a simple version of
bench ball. The children in Year 2 have brought a
letter home to see if there is any interest in
attending a bench ball event at the Vale Academy.
Please could you send any empty cereal boxes for a future DT project in class 2.

Class 3
Another busy week in Class 3 – we have crammed a
lot in, despite only having a four-day week! We have
spent most of our English lessons looking at different
grammatical features to help us improve our
descriptive writing; we have had a go at using similes
and expanded noun phrases, which will hopefully
help improve the quality of our hot writes next week.
Maths has seen us continuing with our multiplication
and division unit; this week we have had a go at
multiplying and dividing multiples of 10, using our
knowledge of times tables to help us find the
answers. It has taken a bit of getting their heads
round at times, but all the children have had a really
good go at it. Next week we will start looking at
different methods of multiplication.
We have started a new topic in Science; moving on
from sound to light. Our first lesson concentrated on
sharing our existing knowledge of the topic and also
discussing sources of light – some of the children
were surprised to learn that some objects they
thought were sources of light, such as the moon,
actually aren’t and only reflect light. I was amazed to
hear how knowledgeable some of the children
already are on this topic and think they will really
enjoy it when we get a bit further into it.
Class 4
This week we have been working hard on our
times table knowledge and making the link
between multiples and factors in preparation for
fraction work next week. In English, we have
looked at how to use a semi-colon to separate two
main clauses and we have hot-seated Edmund
(thanks Jasmine) to find out how he felt after the
death of Aslan in The Lion, the Witch and the
Wardrobe. We also wrote in character to explore
his feelings further. We have also tied together
our WWII topic, looking at the Battle of Britain
and how that was a turning point in the war. We
have looked at how the local town of Grimsby was
affected by the Blitz and tried to describe the
scene of bombed streets using personification.
Today, we started to make our own Spitfire
models out of card and we'll explore that further
as the topic comes to an end. I think we've really
enjoyed this topic and our camouflage collage
display is coming along nicely to celebrate our
work from earlier in the term. Can you spot who is camouflaged onto the newspaper page?
