In his book Narrative and Genre: Key Concepts in Media Studies, (Palgrave, Macmillan), Nick Lacey defines genre elements as constituting the 5 key areas below:

setting character narrative iconography style

When analysing texts, use Lacey’s repertoire of genre elements as a guide. Fill in the boxes below, making notes on the genre conventions that you see

Genre elements ConventionsSetting- mise en scene/ location

New York – most good action movies are set in big cities.Washington, Bar, On the street, very cliché for this type of movie.

Characters – representations, stereotypes, behaviour, body language, specific actors/stars

Liam Neeson – detective.(protagonist), victim(The man’s wife), Victim 2 (the girl in the red coat)

Men in the van are the villians ( very similar to taken)

Narrative events –how is the narrative ordered and structured? Is it elliptical/enigmatic (elements left out to intrigue/entice the audience)

In the trailer there are certain elements that are left out. This intrigues the target audience as they want to know what happens. Some clips are also edited down to create a sense of excitement throughout the advert. However the way they pick the clips is very clever as they will need to bring across the genre of the film and tell a very brief story line.

Iconography –Well known or recognisable people/objects/buildingsmise en scene/ props, costume, setting, symbolic codes

Empire state building, The New York Skye Line, Bar, The colours show its going to be action because at the beginning there isn’t much colour but they are slowly getting brighter. It is very iconic that the main character (liam Neeson) is an ex-cop/ detective. This making it appeal to the type of audience that watch these types of films. The reason for this is that he always plays that part. Specifically from the taken films.

STYLE: Technical and audio codes – camera use, editing, diegetic/non diegetic sound, sfx. Mise en
