Daily Fellowship with God Andrew Murray

1. The first and chief need of our

Christian life is Fellowship with God.

The Divine life within us comes from

God, and is entirely dependent upon

Him. As I need every moment afresh

the air to breathe, as the sun sends

down every moment its light afresh, so

it is only in direct living

communication with God that my soul

can be strong.

The manna of one day was corrupt when the next day came. I must

every day have fresh grace from heaven, and I obtain it only in direct

waiting upon God Himself. Begin each day by tarrying before God, and

letting Him touch you. Take time to meet God.

2. To this end, let your first act in your devotion be a setting yourself

still before God. In prayer, or worship, everything depends upon God

taking the chief place. I must bow quietly before Him in humble faith and

adoration, speaking thus within my heart: "God is near. God is near. God

is love, longing to communicate Himself to me. God the Almighty One,

Who worketh all in all, is even now waiting to work in me, and make

Himself known." Take time, till you know God is very near.

3. When you have given God His place of honor, glory, and power,

take your place of deepest lowliness, and seek to be filled with the Spirit of

humility. As a creature it is your blessedness to be nothing, that God may

be all in you. As a sinner you are not worthy to look up to God; bow in self

abasement. As a saint, let God's love overwhelm you, and bow you still

lower down. Sink down before Him in humility, meekness, patience, and

surrender to His goodness and mercy. He will exalt you. Oh! take time, to

get very low before God.

4. Then accept and value your place in Christ Jesus. God delights in

nothing but His beloved Son, and can be satisfied with nothing else in

those who draw nigh to Him. Enter deep into God's holy presence in the

boldness which the blood gives, and in the assurance that in Christ you are

most well-pleasing. In Christ you are within the veil. You have access into

the very heart and love of the Father. This is the great object of fellowship

with God: that I may have more of God in my life, and that God may see

Christ formed in me. Be silent before God and let Him bless you.

5. This Christ is a living Person. He loves you with a personal love,

and He looks every day for the personal response of your love. Look into

His face with trust, till His love really shines into your heart. Make His

heart glad by telling Him that you do love Him. He offers Himself to you

as a personal Saviour and Keeper from the power of sin. Do not ask, can I

be kept from sinning, if I keep close to Him? but ask, can I be kept from

sinning, if He always keeps close to me? and you see at once how safe it is

to trust Him.

6. We have not only Christ's life in us as

a power, and His presence with us as a

person, but we have His likeness to be

wrought into us. He is to be formed in us,

so that His form or figure, His likeness,

can be seen in us. Bow before God until

you get some sense of the greatness and

blessedness of the work to be carried on

by God in you this day. Say to God,

"Father, here am I for Thee to give as

much in me of Christ's likeness as I can

receive." And wait to hear Him say, "My

child, I give thee as much of Christ as thy heart is open to receive." The

God who revealed Jesus in the flesh and perfected Him, will reveal Him in

thee and perfect thee in Him. The Father loves the Son, and delights to

work out His image and likeness in thee. Count upon it that this blessed

work will be done in thee as thou waitest on thy God, and holdest

fellowship with Him.

7. The likeness to Christ consists chiefly in two things--the likeness of

His death and resurrection, (Rom. 6:5). The death of Christ was the

consummation of His humility and obedience, the entire giving up of His

life to God. In Him we are dead to sin. As we sink down in humility and

dependence and entire

surrender to God, the

power of His death

works in us, and we are

made conformable to His

death. And so we know

Him in the power of His

resurrection, in the

victory over sin, and all

the joy and power of the

risen life. Therefore every morning, "present yourselves unto God as

those that are alive from the dead." He will maintain the life He gave, and

bestow the grace to live as risen ones.

8. All this can only be in the power of the Holy Spirit, who dwells in

you. Count upon Him to glorify Christ in you. Count upon Christ to

increase in you the inflowing of His Spirit. As you wait before God to

realize His presence, remember that the Spirit is in you to reveal the things

of God. Seek in God's presence to have the anointing of the Spirit of Christ

so truly that your whole life may every moment be spiritual.

9. As you meditate on this wondrous salvation and seek full fellowship

with the great and holy God, and wait on Him to reveal Christ in you, you

will feel how needful the giving up of all is to receive Him. Seek grace to

know what it means to live as wholly for God as Christ did. Only the Holy

Spirit Himself can teach you what an entire yielding of the whole life to

God can mean. Wait on God to show you in this what you do not know.

Let every approach to God, and every request for fellowship with Him be

accompanied by a new, very definite, and entire surrender to Him to work

in you.

10. "By faith" must here, as through all Scripture, and all the spiritual life,

be the keynote. As you tarry before God, let it be in a deep quiet faith in

Him, the Invisible One, who is so near, so holy, so mighty, so loving. In a

deep, restful faith too, that all the blessings and powers of the heavenly life

are around you, and in you. Just yield yourself in the faith of a perfect trust

to the Ever Blessed Holy Trinity to work out all God's purpose in you.

Begin each day thus in fellowship with God, and God will be all in all to

you.

A Woman After God’s Own Heart By Valerie Loh

Thank God for letting me chance upon this new book in the church

library drawer! Though this book is specifically addressed to women,

I found many chapters that can be applied to all Christians and many

nuggets of wisdom about practical Christian living in other chapters

that one may think is for mothers and wives exclusively. I would like

to share some of this spiritual food with you.

The chapter ―A Heart That Serves‖ talks about job assignment as a

Christian wife to serve her husband. The author provides a testimony

of herself —in fact her life story, the book, is a testimony for Christ—

to focus on and help her husband as the Bible says in Gen 2:18 to

do. We as young Christians can learn the importance of a servant’s

spirit that helps one to be more like Christ as one esteems others

better than oneself and gives preference to other people (Rom

12:10) out of honor for God. Such a heart of Christ-like service

glorifies Him, as we follow His will.

The topic of home management is addressed in

―A Heart that Creates Order from Chaos‖.

Instead of engaging in negative behaviors as

seen in 1 Tim 5:13, wives are to manage their

households (Prov 31:27 ―She….eateth not the

bread of idleness‖). The author provides 12 time

management tips that can be applied to our lives

that prevent us from engaging in unprofitable or

ungodly activities but managing what God has given us. These

prevent us from being sloppy at home and even improve our

management of a ministry in church as we develop faithfulness and

live according to God’s instructions.

When it comes to being a mother in ―A Heart Overflowing with

Motherly Affection‖, we do have much to learn too. The chapter

covers many topics including ―A Heart That Gives‖. It brought out the

point that wives and mothers are to care for and love their children

simply because God expects that of mothers in Tit 2:4. Similarly,

the author puts it across that we ought not to have selfish motives; that

we do expecting nothing in return, not even recognition and praise,

because it is our duty; as God’s word plainly states. ―A Heart That Is

Quiet‖ tells us that mothers are not to talk about their children in a

negative way (Prov 31:26 ―in her tongue is the law of kindness‖).

Similarly, we can learn that we should have a heart that is thinks

positively towards God’s assignments despite the challenges we

may encounter.

Here’s one key principle that I observed surrounds the whole theme of

this book:

Filling ourselves with the goodness of God such that

this richness overflows and we are able to minister to

His people.

The impact of your ministry with people will be in direct

proportion to the time you spend with God. This refers to spiritual

growth in preparation for ministry. Christ must be our life (I John

5:11-12). Spiritual growth begins in Christ. We have a new beginning;

God’s acceptance (Eph 1:6), God’s power in the Holy Spirit (Acts 1:8)

and God’s total sufficiency (2 Cor 12:9).

Spiritual growth involves the pursuit of knowledge. Jesus is our

model to live a life that pleases God. As observed in Luke 2:52,

―Jesus increased in wisdom‖. In order to fill ourselves up, we ought

first to purposefully seek knowledge. The author shared that

selective reading, taking up of classes and the counsel of fellow

Christians are good ways by which we may grow in knowledge. Other

ways include having specific goals in Bible study (that provide focus),

and keeping track of personal Bible reading progress, which would

also serve as an encouragement.

Remember, it is only when we are filled with the things of God

that we have something to give to the ministry. We are filled with

all spiritual blessings (Eph 1:3), the goodness of God (Gal 5:22-23),

and the Spirit of God (Gal 4:6); we are also gifted for ministry (1 Cor

12:7-11) and blessed with the mind of Christ (1 Cor 2:16).

It may take a long time, but God will provide the opportunities for

us to serve, in His time. The book emphasizes this point by bringing

out several examples:

Moses was a nobody—a shepherd for 40 years of his life, after those

40 years of preparation, he burst on to the scene with signs, wonders,

miracles, and was faithful in his service to God.

Joseph found himself in prison for 2-3 years. But God used the time

to prepare him for leadership – so much so that Joseph served as

second-in-command over the entire known world (Gen 41).

John the Baptist lived in the wilderness for 30 years. But when he

made his appearance, he preached so powerfully that others thought

he was the Messiah. John’s ministry lasted no longer than one year,

yet it demanded lengthy spiritual preparation.

With that fullness spilling out of your heart, you will be able to serve,

spreading the joy of truly knowing Him, sharing your love for Christ,

and encouraging others (Col 4:6, Isa 50:4), being no longer be

satisfied with meaningless, trivial conversations. For such a person,

life is never dull.

There is so much more to share from this book that is relevant to us;

chapters such as ―A Heart Committed to Prayer‖ which have

motivated me to be more in tune with God, through prayer, wherever I

am. I have grown to appreciate more how it is a powerful privilege for

us, and how I can enter into events we prayed for with delight,

anticipation and courage! When we slip away to be with God in

prayer and study, there will be Great Exchanges with Him which

we must discover for ourselves.

The book also touches on living out God’s priorities, and teaches us to

plan each day well, because humans’ good intentions in this aspect

do not go very far. How do you acquire that satisfying tiredness

described in Psalm 107:9?

Yet another chapter touches on ―A Heart that Obeys‖, and encourages

us to follow hard after God, to be on His heels, literally clinging to

Him. How shall we go about doing this? I encourage anyone who is

seeking after God’s own heart to pick up this book.

And The Spider

During the War, a US marine was separated from his unit. The fighting had been intense, and in the smoke and the crossfire he had lost touch with his comrades. Alone in the hills, he could hear enemy soldiers coming in his direction. Scrambling for cover, he found his way up a high ridge to several small caves in the rock. Quickly he crawled inside one of the caves. Although safe for the moment, he realized that once the enemy soldiers looking for him swept up the ridge, they would quickly search all the caves and he would be killed. As he waited, he prayed, "Lord, if it be your will, please protect me. Whatever your will though, I love you and trust you. Amen." After praying, he lay quietly listening to the enemy begin to draw close. He thought, "Well, I guess the Lord isn't going to help me out of this one..." Then he saw a spider begin to build a web over the front of his cave. As he watched, listening to the enemy searching for him all the while, the spider layered strand after strand of web across the opening of the cave.

"Ha!” he thought, "What I need is a brick wall, but instead, the Lord has sent me is a spider web. God does have a sense of humor." As the enemy drew closer he watched from the darkness of his hideout and could see them searching one cave after another. As they came to his, he got ready to make his last stand. To his amazement, however, after glancing in the direction of his cave, they

moved on. Suddenly, he realized that with the spider web over the entrance, his cave looked as if no one had entered for quite a while. "Lord, forgive me," prayed the young man. "I had forgotten that with you a spider's web can be stronger than a brick wall." We all face times of great trouble. When we do, it is so easy to forget the victories that God would work in our lives, sometimes in the most surprising ways. Nehemiah, a great leader, reminded the people of Israel when they faced the task of rebuilding Jerusalem: "The God of heaven, he will prosper us; therefore we his servants will arise and build” Nehemiah 2:20 Remember: Whatever is happening in your life, with God, a mere spider's web can become a brick wall of protection. Believe He is with you always. Speak His name through Jesus His son, and you will see His great power and love in your life.

Reflections on YF Camp 2011 (12-17th Dec 2011)

YF Camp this year was for me, very different in many ways. For starters, I was to be an assistant leader. This was my first time being an assistant leader and I was not sure whether I was up to the task. Also, the camp this year had many younger YFers and there were many faces, which were pretty unfamiliar to me, which made the task more daunting. I was very unsure if I would be able to help in answering group members’ questions about the messages they heard, lest it would not edify them. Thankfully, the Lord was gracious and provided assurance in the form of a leader’s retreat, which helped

to assuage many of my worries and fears. Also, many more experienced leaders shared tips on how to be good leaders who would be able to effectively carry out God’s work.

When the camp finally started, I tried my best to apply what I learnt at the retreat. Some of the most important things, which I learnt a leader should do, such as being exemplars for the campers, were hard for me to do, especially during very fun games where it became easier to go wild. Other than that, it was also hard to wake up earlier than the rest and sleep later in order to join Weng Ngai for the informal morning prayer meetings held before QT each day as well as to discuss camp matters. Also, to improve my own personal QT and to try to make my QT longer such that I would be able to learn more about His Word, I attempted to do all 3 camp devotionals, and I was much encouraged when some of the campers around me attempted to do the same as well. The daily devotionals this year were very good in the sense that they had much depth, going into each verse specifically and explaining it thoroughly. This has helped me much in my daily QT, as I was prepared to digest more of God’s Word each day. So for this year, instead of just doing the Daily Manna, I now also use the Daily Remembrancer as a supplement as well. Doing QT twice a day has also taught me that the reading of His Word need not be a once a day thing, and that one should love to read His Word so much that during

any time of the day, any free time, we should have a desire to read His Word.

Also different from previous camps was the theme, which was “The Centrality of Christ”. The theme this year was focused more on messages of salvation, and this meant that many of the messages were along the lines of something we would have heard before. However, through much self-examination, I knew that the same messages still applied to me as I realized that I had many, many shortcomings that would have grieved Jesus. On top of my own imperfections, I still had to be prepared to help my group members answer their questions on salvation, which was my main worry at that point of time as I did not want to be a stumbling block to others especially if I did not answer their questions correctly. At the end of the camp, I also resolved to make sure of my Christian growth and serve God in more areas of service as compared to 2011, despite this year being the A levels year. This was to ensure that the growth (or what I thought was growth) in camp could be sustained and not just be an emotive high.

YF Batam Mission Trip – 7th/8th

From the 7-8 January 2012 (Saturday morning to Sunday night), a group of 11 YFers, led by Eld Cheng and Weng Ngai, went to Batam, Indonesia for a weekend mission trip. We were there mainly to help out in the Joyful Ministry, which was a Christian outreach to the young children there, ageing from around 5 to 12. The Joyful Ministry is usually led by the local Bible students. So, did that make us less “useful”? Well, of course not. Although months of planning had been put into this mission trip, I trust that many of the mission trippers had prayed fervently about this trip and trusted in the Lord to provide for our every need. Not surprisingly, we ran into language barriers

despite having an interpreter with us. Not to mention that it was hard for some of us to acculturate ourselves, as the lifestyle in Batam is different from that which we experience in Singapore. Nevertheless, the Lord blessed us and our brethren there throughout the trip. We spiced up the Joyful Ministry’s usual program with games, quizzes and creativity time, most of which we rewarded the children for being attentive and playing hard. We would usually have a time of singspiration first, during which we would teach the children some English Christian songs, then a story on the Good Samaritan, creativity, then games.

Whilst spending time with the children, some of the YFers also picked up several skills of their own, like a little Bahasa, and how to connect with the young children by bringing themselves down to their level. This mission trip was a good time of bonding between the YFers and our brethren in Batam. It also gave all of us the opportunity to experience life in Batam and also the church service there. I believe that all the YFers enjoyed their time there, and that the church there was encouraged by our presence. Hopefully, more YFers would join in the next trip. Don’t be afraid that you might feel left out or awkward just because you have no experience in mission work. Pray to the Lord and ask for His guidance. Mission work does more than what meets the eye – it works as an encouragement to those that we’re helping. Hardship. Mission work is never easy, and it never will be. No pain, no gain; without sacrificing our time and effort for the Lord, souls will never be won for Him. ** Several more of such weekend mission trips to Batam will be organized over the course of the year. Look out for announcements if you’re keen on joining!

We Must Hear Worthily

It is carelessly assumed by most

persons that when a preacher

pronounces a message of truth

and his words fall upon the ears

of his listeners there has been a

bona fide1 act of hearing on their

part. They are assumed to have

been instructed because they

have listened to the Word of

God. But it does not follow.

If we would be truly instructed

we must be worthy to hear; or

more accurately, we must hear in

a worthy manner. In listening to

a sermon, reading a good book or even reading the Bible itself, much may

be lost to us because we are not worthy to hear the truth. That is, we have

not met the moral terms required to hear the truth rightly.

The text, "So shall my word be that goeth forth out of my mouth: it shall

not return unto me void" (Isa. 55:11), does not give support to the notion

that God's truth is effective wherever and whenever it is preached. The

lament of the Old Testament prophets was that they cried aloud unto Israel

and their words were not regarded. "Because I have called, and ye

refused; I have stretched out my hand, and no man regarded; but ye have

set at nought all my counsel, and would none of my reproof" (Prov. 1:24,

25). Our Lord's parable of the sower and the seed is another proof that it is

possible to hear truth without profit. Paul turned from the Jews with the

quotation. "Hearing ye shall hear, and shall not understand" (Acts 28:28),

and began his ministry to the Gentiles.

Before there can be true inward understanding of divine truth there

must be a moral preparation. Our Lord made this plain in several

passages in the Gospels. "At that time Jesus answered and said, I thank

thee, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because thou hast hid these

things from the wise and prudent, and hath revealed them unto babes.

Even so, Father: for so it seemed good in thy sight" (Mat 11:25, 26). The

Gospel according to John is filled with the teaching that there must be a

spiritual readying within the soul before there can be a real

understanding of God's truth. This is summed up in John 7:17. "If any

man will do his will, he shall know of the doctrine." And Paul said plainly,

"But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for

they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are

spiritually discerned" (1 Cor. 2:14).

When considering a pastor the average church asks in effect, "Is this man

worthy to speak to us?" I suppose such a question is valid, but there is

another one more in keeping with the circumstances; it is, "Are we worthy

to hear this man?" An attitude of humility on the part of the hearers

would secure lot them a great deal more light from whatever sized candle

the Lord might be pleased to send them.

When a man or woman becomes worthy to hear, God sometimes talks to

them through very

unworthy media. Peter, as an

example, was brought to

repentance by the crowing of a

rooster. Of course the rooster

was innocent of the part he

was playing, but Peter's Lord

had set things up for him so

that the rooster's crow could

break the heart of His back-

slidden apostle and send him

out in a flood of penitential

tears. Augustine was brought

to repentance by seeing a

friend killed by lightning.

Nicholas Hermann was

converted through seeing a

tree stripped of its leaves in

winter. Spurgeon became a

Christian after hearing a

humble Methodist class leader

exhort a congregation. Moody was led into a dear anointing of the Spirit

through the testimony of a simple-hearted elderly lady of his acquaintance.

All these examples teach

the same thing. God will

speak to the hearts of

those who prepare

themselves to hear; and

conversely, those who do

not so prepare themselves

will hear nothing even

though the Word of God

is falling upon their outer

ears every Sunday.

Good hearers are as important as good preachers. We need more of both.

Hello Secretary, can you tell us more about yourself? Tell us more about

what you're studying in NTU!

Hello! I’m Sheryl and I’m turning 21 this year. I’m now pursuing a double

specialisation in Accountancy and Business Law in NTU. Currently I’m in my 2nd year

of studies. Thank God for seeing me through thus far! :))

How's life in university?

Well, life in University is..hmm…exciting? haha. Well, definitely very different from

Secondary school or JC. A lot more freedom and projects to be done I guess?

You recently came back from Denmark, care to share your experience there?

Oh yes, I was actually in Copenhagen for about half a year for exchange and I truly

thank God for providing for all my needs and teaching me many precious lessons

along the way! It was really through small little things that I could see God’s hand

leading me all the way.

For example, I was really blessed to have another Sister-in-Christ from Life BP

church who went over to the same school for exchange as well. Also, the Lord was

good in providing me with seemingly small things such as my accommodation,

journey mercies in the midst of all my travels, studies there etc. One thing which I

really thank God for teaching me through my exchange was the privilege of worship

here in Singapore. When I was in Denmark, I had a pretty hard time finding a church

to worship in. The more ‘traditional’ churches worshipped in Danish (which I

obviously can’t speak nor understand. haha:p) while the English-speaking churches

were…well, kind of compromised in their stands. It was really during this time that I

really appreciated and longed for a proper worship service and singing of hymns in

the church. It was something which I had never experienced before and so I truly

thank God for teaching me this wondrous lesson.

Well, there are really a lot of stories which I can share to testify of the Lord’s

goodness… so just ask me if you want to know more!

How long have you been in YF?

Hmm…I joined the YF when I was in Sec 1..so that would make it a total of 8 years

now? haha..

What areas in church or YF have you served in, and what are you currently

serving in?

Currently I’m serving in the Kindergarten Department, YF Exco and distribution of the

weekly distributions.

What do you enjoy most about serving the Lord?

A verse that has always kept me going in my service for him ‘Only fear the LORD,

and serve him in truth with all your heart: for consider how great things he

hath done for you.’ 1 Samuel 12:24

Any particular area you would like to encourage others to serve in?

Er… I won’t encourage others to serve in a specific area cos everyone probably has

different talents! But just remember that it is really a privilege to serve God and you

don’t need to be ‘qualified’ to serve! As a speaker once said, ‘God doesn’t call the

qualified, He qualifies the called’

Favourite verse?

Well, I don’t exactly have 1 favourite verse, but two verses which are very dear to me

- Isaiah 55:8-9

‘For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the

LORD. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than

your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts.’

Is there anything else you would like to share with the YF?

Hmm… Do continue to be faithful in coming for YF! There is no better place to be

found than in the House of the Lord!:))

Much of our difficulty as seeking Christians stems from

our unwillingness to take God as He is and adjust our

lives accordingly. We insist upon trying to modify Him

and to bring Him nearer to our own image.
