HOTSHOTS Focus  1 1 It is important to save money in the bank so that

our savings will be safe. It will also help us earn interest and increase our savings.

2 It is important to compare prices of products before we buy something so we can buy products with the best prices. It will also help us save more money.

3 It is important to take care of our electronic gadgets so they last longer. The cost to buy a new electronic gadget or repair is expensive.

4 It is important to prepare a monthly budget so we can keep track of our spending. We will not overspend if we stick to our budget.

•  Unit 3 • Yesterday and TodayPage 14Computers are categorised based on their technology. The first-generation computers were used between 1940 and 1958. These computers used vacuum tubes. They were large and worked at a slow speed. They had small internal storage too. An example of a first

generation computer was Mark 1. It was designed by Howard H. Aiken in 1944. Mark 1 was about 16 m long. The wires used to connect parts of the machine were about 800 km long. Mark 1 was also the first fully automatic calculator. However, it was very slow. It took three to five seconds to perform a calculation.

The SmartplateThe Smartplate is a 10-inch plate which is enabled

with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. It has three mini cameras and weight sensors. The plate helps you watch what you eat. It helps you control your food portion. If there is too much food on the plate, it will alert you. There is an app which connects with your plate so you can analyse and track the food you eat. It can also combine the image and weight of the food and analyse it in just a few seconds.Page 18Little Red Riding Hood and the WolfAs soon as wolf began to feel,That he would like a decent meal,He went and knocked on grandma’s doorWhen grandma opened it, she saw.The sharp white teeth, the evil grin,And wolf said, “May I come in?”Poor grandma almost died,“He’s going to eat me up!” she cried.Page 19 1 (a) yours (b) mine

The Gnomes Come to Live in RenosiaRosemary, the fairies and the elves had a

celebration every year on the day the monsters were defeated. During one of the celebrations, the gnomes did not come to the kingdom of Renosia to attend the celebrations. Rosemary was worried about them so she flew to their cottage. When she arrived, she was shocked to see it badly damaged. Rosemary searched for the gnomes and found them deep in the jungle. The gnomes told Rosemary that a terrible storm had damaged their cottage. Rosemary invited them to live in Renosia and they accepted. Rosemary, the fairies and the elves helped the gnomes build a beautiful cottage in Renosia. The gnomes lived happily with the fairies and elves for many, many years.

Page 33 1 “Let’s organise a clean-up,” said Rishi. “This will

help clean and reduce pollution along the Teluk Pantai beach.”

“That’s a great idea! If we can’t organise a clean-up ourselves, we can join a clean-up group which already helps clean our beaches,” said Suhaimi.

2 “How does rubbish end up in the sea?” asked Rishi.

“People create a lot of waste on land. Sometimes, they do not throw away their rubbish in a responsible way. If we reduce the amount of rubbish we produce on land, less rubbish will end up in the sea,” explained Suhaimi.

3 “How can we reduce rubbish on land?” said Rishi. “One way you can reduce rubbish is by recycling

paper, glass, aluminium and plastic items,” said Suhaimi.

“I recycle at home,” said Rishi. Suhaimi said, “That’s great! You can also compost

vegetable and fruit peels and garden refuse. Composting helps to reuse household rubbish.”

B 1 He is surfing in the sea now. 2 The Green Club is organising a river clean-up

tomorrow. 3 The pupils are picking up the rubbish in the field. 4 I am cleaning the oil that is stuck on the stork’s

feathers. 5 They are removing rubbish that is clogging the

large monsoon drain. 6 The baby dolphin is struggling to get out of the

fisherman’s net.

HOTSHOTS Focus  3 1 If we fish in an area rich with coral reefs, the nets

or cages used by the fishermen will damage the fragile reefs. Some coral reefs grow very slowly so these reefs may become endangered.

2 If we eat turtle eggs, the number of eggs hatching into baby turtles will decrease. The population of a certain species of turtles will reduce. As a result, turtles will be in danger of becoming extinct.

3 If we dump chemicals into the sea, the harsh chemicals will contaminate the water. Marine life will either die or be poisoned. When we eat the contaminated marine life, we may get sick.

Prince Fariz was annoyed at first and then he realised the Chief Minister was just doing his job. The prince realised that he should start ruling the country and meeting his people. Prince Fariz asked the Chief Minister to prepare a list of duties he needed to carry out every day. The prince listened to the Chief Minister’s advice and remembered what his father taught him too. Prince Fariz used his good judgement. He ruled his country well for a very long time.

no shady trees along the way. 5 The horse’s shadow provided some shade so the

man decided to sit down beside the horse. 6 The owner wanted to sit in the shade too so he

began to quarrel with the man. 7 The man refused to share because he had paid

the owner to hire the horse. 8 The owner did not agree with the man because

he only hired the horse not its shadow. 9 The horse grew restless because the men were

making a lot of noise. 10 The men were too busy quarrelling so they did

not notice that the horse had walked away.

because she is brave. She walks through the jungle all by herself so she can visit her Grandma who is sick. Once she realises that a wolf is pretending to be her Grandma so he can eat her, she does not run away. She talks to him so she has time to think what to do in a dangerous situation.

2 The grasshopper’s jumping legs are longer than its walking legs.

3 A butterfly has bigger wings than a house fly. 4 The fruits in this tree are riper than the fruits in

that one. 5 The biggest grasshoppers are nearly 12 cm long. 6 Dragonflies have the largest eyes and the sharpest

eyesight of all the insects. 7 Insects are divided into 32 groups and the largest

group is the beetle. 8 Being chased by a swarm of bees was the most

terrifying moment of our camping trip. 9 The most useful of all insects is the bee because

it helps plants grow. 10 A water strider is lighter than a grasshopper so it

can walk on the surface of water. 11 The heaviest insect in the world is the cricket-like

bug called the giant weta. It is heavier than a sparrow.

Beginning 1 A lark built a nest in a field of wheat. 2 Time passed and the stalks grew taller and her

chicks grew older.Middle 3 One day, the young larks heard the farmer telling

his son that it was time to ask their friends to help harvest the wheat. When their mother returned home, they told her what they had heard. She told them not to worry.

4 A few days later, the young larks heard the farmer telling his son that they could not wait any longer and that they had to harvest the wheat themselves. When their mother returned home, they told her what they had heard. She said that they must leave the next morning.

End 5 The next morning the young larks and their mother

left their nest. 6 As they flew out of the field of wheat, the farmer

and his son began cutting the stalks to harvest the wheat.

1 We should save our pocket money. This way we can have our own saving for our future.

2 We should work together. This will make a task less difficult and easy to complete.

3 We should return things to the rightful owner. This will prevent others from facing loss of money or property.

We finished the gotong-royong at about noon. We helped ourselves to some refreshments. After that, everyone went home.

Subject: Activities to do in Kenyir Lake and Kapas Island

Hello Ross,

You have chosen two interesting places to visit. First, let me tell you what you can do at Kenyir Lake. You can enjoy (1) a boat cruise to see thick flora everywhere. If you like fishing, (2) you can make arrangements to go fishing in the lake. There are caves nearby so (3) you can get a guide to take caving. Finally, there are many (4) beautiful waterfalls to visit there. The next place you want to know about is Kapas Island. You can go (5) kayaking near the beach or (6) hiking along the coast. You must try (7) snorkelling here because you can see a shipwreck up close. There is also a (8) turtle sanctuary where you can see baby turtles in the hatchery. Let me know which place you finally decide to visit. Bye.

Your friend,Swee Han

all. I can say this because I’ve escaped from many tigers in my life,” said Sang Kancil. The tiger began to believe Sang Kancil’s words.

“If you don’t believe me, look at your reflection in the water,” suggested Sang Kancil.

The tiger looked at himself in the water. “Oh, I AM very handsome,” said tiger. Just then, something moved in the water. A crocodile popped its head out of the water. The tiger got a fright and Sang Kancil quickly ran away.

Suhan and his family visited an elephant sanctuary during their holiday in Bangkok last month. They watched the mahouts bathe the elephants in the river. Suhan also helped the mahouts scrub the elephants’ body using coconut husks.

On another day, a bus took Suhan and his family to a coconut farm. A guide gave them a tour of a sugar factory. Suhan enjoyed the sweet smell of the freshly-made sugar.

They went on a river cruise. They enjoyed the bright city lights from the yacht. Suhan took a lot of pictures of the buildings along the river. Later, they ate dinner and enjoyed a musical show.

Dr Rajan, the botanist, studies carnivorous plants. He is looking for a Venus fly trap in the jungle. After walking for an hour, he finds one. He sets up

his camera to record how the plant catches insects. Dr Rajan returns the following day to retrieve his camera. Then, he returns to the research centre. Dr Rajan watches the recording. After several minutes, he sees a beetle flying above the thick leaves. The beetle touches the tiny hairs on the leaves. Suddenly, the leaves snap shut and the beetle disappears.

Question 2Sample answer

A fox was walking leisurely through the jungle. Suddenly, something caught its tail and he cried out in pain. The fox turned around and saw its tail caught in a metal trap. He squirmed and twisted his body until he got free. Unfortunately, he lost his tail. The fox walked home sadly. He saw other foxes looking at him with concern. Then, they asked him about his tail. The fox was embarrassed to tell them the truth. Instead, he told them that he cut it off. He encouraged the others to cut their tails too. Then, one fox pointed out the only reason he was encouraging everyone to cut their tails is because he had lost his own.
