A Tribute to Veterans Will be presented by the 5th grade class
at French Elementary
November 9, 2017

7:00 pm for parents and community
We are still looking for more pictures of Veterans to
include in our slideshow presentation. Please send digital

5th grade students should arrive by 6:30 pm for the evening
performance and report to their music room.
All students should dress in patriotic colored shirts with long
dark pants or jeans and comfortable shoes for the
program with the exception of those students who have
been given specific information regarding costuming
for their special parts. Students will dress the same for
both programs, so please plan accordingly.
As always, thank you for your support and dedication to our
students and the music program at French Elementary!

Why Red Ribbon Week? By Kourtney Craig Article Written by Clare Curry Kiki Camarena was a D.E.A. (Drug Enforcement Assistant). He gave his life for his family and our country on the issue of drugs. One day, his pilot and him were abducted (Kidnapped) and killed. Red Ribbon Week recognizes his sacrifices, and recognizes how he changed America.

The Fifth Grade Play Upcoming Events
Guess what French Elementary? The Fifth Grade Play is coming up! November 9th in the cafeteria. The Fifth Grade Play will have solos, songs, instruments, dances, speaking parts, and a slide show! Mrs. Massa and Mrs. Gunhouse came up with the play to honor the veterans that help this country stand. The fifth graders will sing about the Navy, the Air force, the Army, the Marines, and the Coast Guard. Written By- Evan Sarich

Where do library books come from?
Students ask me that question all the time. The little ones think Mrs. McKamie bought them all personally! Here is the answer! We started our collection with
bond money from the district.
Now the French library purchases books with these sources: 1. Small yearly budget from the district 2. Book fair profit 3. Birthday Book Club funds 4. Generosity of PTO with BoxTops proceeds 5. Grants

Name That Book Club Fifth graders may choose to be a part of this club by reading the books on the
NTB list (below). Teams will compete in January and the top two teams will go to the district competition in February. Keep reading! The NTB club meets Mondays

Bluebonnet Club
The Bluebonnet Club is open to third, fourth, and fifth graders. Students read 15 of the 20 books on the list and write a sentence about the book. Those students then get an invitation to the Bluebonnet Bash to be held in May! The deadline is

If you would like to purchase a Birthday Book for your child, please see the form below. The cost if $15 for a new book with the child’s name on a book plate. The book will be read by the person chosen by student or parent, then returned to the
library after a 2-week checkout period.

If you are interested in purchasing a birthday book, please fill in the information on this form and send $15 to school with your child. Cash is welcome or checks may be made payable to French Elementary. Please write “Birthday Club” on the memo line.
A special bookplate with your child's name and birthdate will be permanently placed in the front of the book. Your child will be the first student to check it out. After the special two-week checkout period, the book will become a part of French’s library collection for all students to enjoy!

Book Fair
The book fair will be closed from 2:30 – 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 14.
French Elementary PTO Food Drive
Please help us collect nonperishable food items for the families in need within our community.
Drop off your items in the school rotunda everyday from October 30th- November 10th.
Items needed include canned vegetables and fruits, peanut butter & jelly, cereal, rice, beans, pasta,
and juice. Please also consider donating items that can be used for a Thanksgiving dinner.

Lots of help is needed to staff next week’s Book Fair! Opportunities are available every day
during school, with additional before and after school hours on selected days. There’s a special
need for extra help on Thursday morning, 11/16, as we anticipate lots of shoppers on the
morning of Dads & Donuts.

Key Communicator Meeting 10/18/17 & 11/1/17 Zoning Meeting
Parent University Meeting
The topic of this month’s meeting was Parent University.
Parent University is a program that began in Title 1 schools as a way to engage families in the learning
process. It is more difficult for Title 1 family parent to engage in their children’s learning for multiple
reasons (language, work schedule, etc.)
Hands on activities for parents and their children allow:
to learn together
help parents achieve confidence in parenting
families to gain strategies and tips to support the learning of academic content
build and nurture strong relationships with the families
parents to see how great our schools are
see what happens at school and how you can support at home
21 different workshops are offered. 6 are needed to ‘graduate’. 1600 suspensions a year has been
reduced to 400 due to this program.
While French is not a Title 1 school, it is possible for our families to attend Parent University at any of
our district schools offering the program. It is helpful for children and parents to feel comfortable inside
intermediate or high school they will attend, as well as begin relationships with the staff and
administration.
Or, if parents feel the need, these programs can be brought to French. The district has a CIDC group in
charge of these programs (Family Engagement Coordinator). Staff and administration at French could
implement if a need were identified. PTO would most likely be willing to help.

Zoning for Intermediate # 10
In the 11/1 zoning meeting for new Intermediate School # 10, three separate options were passed out, with maps showing how the district could possibly divide next year to alleviate overcrowding. All of French Elementary was shown as being zoned to the new school in all 3 options. There are still two meetings before final decisions are made. Input is welcome on line and at the meetings.
Zoning Committee December 6 1—2:30 pm & 6—7:30 pm Board Rm There will be a zoning report at the December Board meeting and the information will then be placed online for public comments. A final proposal will be presented for approval by the Board of Trustees at the February Board meeting. Board Report December 11 7 pm Board Room Board Vote February 12 7 pm Board Room The Klein ISD Board Room is located at 7200 Spring Cypress Rd. The number crunching process is fascinating and a great deal of planning is involved.
