“C ome Home” to Bar-W!
Spring is a time to re-
invigorate and re-focus, and best of all “new
beginnings”. As Republicans we must get over the
fact we lost in 2012, so we can use our energy to
focus on and fight the Obama machine. I believe our
Country is worth the fighting for!
Our Country needs each of us. It need us to use
the talents and gifts God has given us to help with
this fight. We fight with our vote, which helps elect
good conservatives, Representatives who believe in
free markets and free people pursuing their dreams!
You may be asking yourself, “What I can do to
help?” Bar-W will be hosting our annual
“Membership Reception” on Monday, April 22,
2013! We are asking that if you have not been to a
meeting in a while, “Come home!” We want you
back — and be sure to bring a friend or two!
If you missed our March meeting, Dr. Robin
Armstrong talked about why we lost the 2012
Presidential election — the Democrats simply turned
out more voters than we did. I knew right then we
must work smarter and harder to ensure this does not
happen in 2016. Everything we do OR don’t do
today will determine the outcome of that election.
Can we afford not to get involve? Are we going to
keep doing the same old thing and leave it to
someone else to do? I believe if the majority of our
fellow Republicans keep this mentality, we may see
the same result. This alone is keeping me motivated
to increase our membership this year. I want 2016 to
be a victory for a Republican President.
So Come On Home Fellow Republicans! You
are welcome and needed.
God bless each of you,
Audrey

S outh Texas is the battle ground for the
future of Texas, and because our state is so
large and important, it is also a battle ground for the
nation. Liberals must be defeated at the local level
today, so we don’t have to worry about defeating
them in Washington
tomorrow. This will
happen if Conservatives
are elected by voters who
are informed and educated.
Join us on April 22 and
take the first step in
learning about the
stranglehold that Liberals
have in south Texas,
particularly in the Hispanic
community. George Rodriguez is the President of
the South Texas Alliance for Progress, which has a
goal to recruit, train and support candidates for
local county and municipal races.
Come hear Mr. Rodriguez, a Ronald Reagan
and George H. Bush appointee, and the first
Hispanic President of a Tea Party in the nation.
This is Bar-W's annual Membership Reception and
it is sure to be an exciting evening - one you won’t
want to miss. See You There!

The Most Dangerous
Liberals in Texas
W hile many Texas
conservatives continue to
focus on national issues, the two
most dangerous liberals in the state,
U.S. Congressman Joaquin Castro
and San Antonio Mayor Julian
Castro are laying the foundation to
take over the state and to ascend to
higher political office.
Last Sunday, (January 27, 2013)
the Castro brothers were interviewed
on CBS’ “Face the Nation” and
predicted to a national TV audience
that within two presidential election
cycles, Texas would be dominated
by the Democrats. “It's changing. It's
going to become a 'purple state' then
a 'blue state' because of the
demographics, because of the
population from folks coming from
outside Texas,” Julián Castro said.
Joaquín Castro agreed, but added
that “it's going to take a lot of work
from Democrats to lay the
infrastructure for change. We are
very busy working on that now.”
The key to the Castro’s vision
and plan is “the demographics”.
Their mother, Rosa Castro, was a
member of the radical Raza Unida
Party (RUP) in the 1970s which
preached that America and Texas
were the products of imperial
aggression and colonialism imposed
on Mexicans. Racial politics and
“Chicano nationalism” are at the
heart of their politics. Rosa Castro
once stated that the defenders of
the Alamo were “a bunch of
drunks”.
The Castros now have a major
ally in the Democratic Party. Henry
Muñoz, a long time liberal fund
political fund raiser in San Antonio,
has been named chairman of the
Party’s Finance Committee.
Munoz's promotion shows that all
the talk about taking Texas over is
going a priority for the national
Democratic Party. Since Munoz is
already deeply involved in Texas
Democratic Party politics, he can
help fundraise nationally and help in
ensuring Texas Democrats have
funding for their state and local
races in particular.
If you want to know how Mayor
Castro governs, just look at the
Texas Comptroller’s report on local
debt from December 2012. San
Antonio has the highest per capita
debt among major Texas cities, even
leading Houston. In November,
Castro pushed through a Pre-kinder
education program for 4 year olds
which carries a long term debt for
tax payers.
Castro and VIA, chaired by
Munoz, have also embarked on a
streetcar project that will cost tax
payers an estimated $790 million.
Castro also recently appointed a
homosexual liaison to city
government. These are just a few of
the “indicators” of what is to come
if the Castro twins continue
unchallenged, and succeed.
The Castros come from the Saul
Alinsky school of community
organizing, similar to President
Obama. They also come from a non-
traditional home where they have
been taught that the world’s poor are
victims of capitalism, imperialism,
and racism. If you like Barak
Hussein Obama, you will love the
Castro twins.
Voters in San Antonio, Bexar
County and throughout Texas
should sit up and take notice of the
Castros and organize to stop them.
They truly are the most dangerous
liberals in Texas.

O ur prayers matter.
They make a
difference. When we pray, all
we need to do is be honest and
sincere. John 9:31 says God
listens to anyone who
worships and obeys Him. He
desires honesty. It doesn't
matter if your prayers are
awkward. The power of
prayer is in the One who
hears it and not in the one
who says it.
Our prayers do make a
difference. Take a moment
and talk to the Lord. He is
listening. Ask Him for the
help you need. The answer
may not be instant, but it will
begin the process. The answer
will come. It may be YES—
NO—MAYBE—NOT NOW
or not in the way you'd
prefer—but the answer will
come. It will make a
difference. Our prayers
matter—to us and to Him.

I n 2012, Bar-W was
pleased to present 657
Dictionaries to third grade
students in eight local Comal
ISD schools. This is indeed a
unique opportunity for our Club
to interact with students and
their families to provide a
valuable tool for their education.
The staff, students and their
families are all thankful of our
efforts. We have received
countless letters, e-mails and
verbal expressions of
appreciation throughout the
years for this literacy project.
For 2013, the Bar-W Board
of Directors voted to continue
this wonderful project, along
with our Constitution Project for
fifth grade students. Of course,
this means we need to raise
substantial funds to accomplish
this ever-expanding project. For
2013, it is projected we will
need to purchase 29 boxes of
dictionaries.
To bring this effort to a more
personal level, we are soliciting
contributions to purchase a box
of dictionaries by individuals.
Each box contains 24
dictionaries for a cost of $30.00
(only $1.25 per dictionary).
When a person purchases a box,
he or she can sign them
individually or allow the Club
members to sign them at an
upcoming general meeting.
Approximately ten members
have already purchased boxes of
dictionaries. These boxes can be
personally purchased or
purchased in honor of someone.
Please consider this special
opportunity for 2013. You may
contact Literacy Chairperson
Fran Carlson at 830-438-7053 if
you have any questions.

pallbearers remove the flag-draped
casket from the hearse, sounds of
“Going Home” can be heard from
the bagpipes. Rifles are fired, taps
played, and sounds of “Amazing
Grace” resound from the bagpipes
as another homeless veteran is laid
to rest with full military honors and
dignity for his service to our country
at the Fort Sam Houston National
Cemetery.
Rick Moran of the American
Thinker posted the following. “Long
time St. Louis Post Dispatch
columnist Bill McClellan is
advocating ending the practice of
giving most veterans the military
honors at their funerals. His reason?
Government cannot afford it.”
The honors given to
these homeless veterans are
offered by volunteers and
funeral services are provided
by the Dignity Funeral
Homes at no cost to the
government. The Memorial
Squads that render the honors are
military veterans from all services.
Albert Pike, bagpiper, a retired
Sergeant Major and Infantry
Paratrooper, began playing for the
program June 11, 2008. There were
two funerals that day. The program
has had 137 funerals. The first
funeral was in May 2003. Albert
has played for 67 of them.
The Digni ty Memoria l®
Homeless Veterans Burial Program
(HVBP) provides dignified burial
services for eligible homeless and
indigent veterans to ensure they
receive the honors in death that their
service in life merited. There are 10

Texas. www.dignitymemorial.com/

service is moving and an honor to our
veterans.
A HOMELESS VETERAN BURIED
By: Albert Pike, US Army (RET) and HVBP Bagpiper
F or those who are not aware,
there is quite a move afoot
to change not only America as we
know it, but the entire world. And—
it hasn’t happened overnight! It
started most recently with the 1987
report on the United Nations’ (UN)
Agenda 21 and Sustainable
Development, which became the
Official UN Policy in 1992. This
UN Agenda 21 document included
the United States as a signatory.
What the UN document says is
chilling, to say the least, to freedom
loving citizens of the United States.
Its objective is to integrate
economic, social and environmental
policies in order to achieve reduced
consumption, social equity, and the
preservation and restoration of
biodiversity. It is totally centered on
environmental impact and focuses
on global land use, education, and
population control and reduction.
AND—it is alive and well
throughout the United States. All
one needs to do is look at the
reinvention of local community
governments as they move toward
environmental activism, urban
redevelopment, early childhood
education and even collectivism
among other areas. In other words,
it is Social Equity and, accordingly,
redistribution of wealth. AND—that
leads us to CSCOPE, which is the
online curriculum that directs
instruction in 70 percent of Texas
public schools, in concert with
Common Core Educat ional
Standards.
Common Core Standards have
been adopted by all states, with
funding provided through stimulus
dollars and without any opportunity
for public approval. As such, the
states do not have many rights as to
what will be taught under Common
Core and could be penalized if the
standards are not used. This includes
what is taught in public schools, as
well as education provided by home
-schoolers. The standards have been

WE FORGE ON! By: Nancy Lewis, 2nd VP-Membership
In c h a l l e n g i n g t i m e s ,
families come together.
Family members draw strength from
one another. They uphold and
support each other.
Republicans suffered devastating
losses in the elections last fall. We
lost a presidential race, which by all
accounts we should have won. We
lost seats in the Senate—and
although we retained the majority in
the House, we lost seats there as
well. (On a positive note,
Republicans now comprise a
majority of the states’ governors!)
But in the spirit of our
forefathers and mothers, we forge
on! While you may be disappointed
in the outcome of our recent
elections, there are so many positive
things your membership in Bar-W
helps to accomplish. Because of our
members, Bar-W is able to distribute
dictionaries to local third graders
and pocket Constitutions to local
fifth graders. We also award a
college scholarship to two deserving
high school seniors each spring.
(And by the way, you can make a
memorial contribution to that
scholarship fund in honor of Joan
Stachiw!)
We are so excited that quite a
few Bar-W members recently
renewed their memberships. Joining
together strengthens and renews us.
Our President, Audrey Cheatum, is
enthusiastic and full of plans for the
future. First Vice President Karen
Griffin is successfully scheduling
inspiring and well -informed
speakers for our upcoming
meetings. If you haven’t joined us
yet this year, then all we’re missing
is you! Your membership in Bar-W
is an invaluable investment in the
future of our community, our state
and our country. Last year we
received a TFRW Membership
award for matching the previous
year’s membership. Let’s keep the
momentum going!
Please plan on joining us at our
annual membership meeting on
April 22, 2013. You will enjoy
good food, great fellowship and a
wonderful speaker! Together, we
can make a difference. We look
forward to seeing you!
BAR-W 11TH ANNUAL
MEMBERSHIP RECEPTION—APRIL 22ND
IT’S FIESTA TIME! By: Marilyn Manford, Hospitality Chairman
M ark your calendar for our annual
Membership Dinner on Monday,
April 22nd. I encourage you to invite your
friends and neighbors to join us. Where else
can you go after work for a free meal, fun,
fellowship AND an interesting speaker?
Back by popular demand, this year we will
be serving Taco Salad with a Fiesta Theme!
Bar-W will provide the meal, but I need your
help. I'm looking for donations of bright
colored cupcakes. (Think Fiesta colors). Can
you bake (or buy) some cupcakes for this
amazing evening?
You will receive an email a little later with
information concerning with whom to RSVP. If
you will, just mention how many cupcakes you
will be bringing. I know I can always count on
the membership to come through when asked.
YOU are the reason Bar-W is strong!
AUNTIE AGNES’ GIFT... Silent Auction Committee
A untie Agnes called and said it is okay to give away the
matched set of bone china teacups to Bar-W for the Silent
Auction at the Membership Reception. Oh yes, also the sterling silver
teapot. Did I mention she wants you to dump (oops, I mean donate)
the Tiffany lamp?
If you own a non-incorporated business, we can accept
merchandise or a gift certificate from your business. If you own an
incorporated business, due to Campaign Finance Laws, we cannot
accept a donation from your business, but you are welcome to donate
an item in your personal name. We need a variety of items, in all price
ranges. If you have a favorite store or restaurant, stop by and ask them
if they would like to donate something. We will advertise the names
of donors in the printed program and throughout the event.
Your donation will help support the operation of Bar-W and fund
community service projects, like dictionaries to third-graders, in
which Bar-W participates. Donations may be taken to RavenHome
Gifts inside the Bulverde HEB or call 830-980-5366 for pick up of
bulky items.
Your support of Bar-W is really appreciated!

A diverse group of members and
concerned public attended the
Bulverde Area Republican Women’s
(Bar-W) monthly meeting to hear the
keynote speaker, Dr. Robin Armstrong,
National Committeeman for Texas and
former Vice-Chairman of the Republican
Party of Texas. Dr. Armstrong offered a
pep talk to the audience regarding the
presidential election defeat last year. He
shared his unique insight, conservative
philosophy of government, and unending
belief that we must halt America’s drifting
away from the values that made her great.
The message he shared was one of
hope, anticipation and optimism for the
future. He conveyed what many of us have
been feeling since last year. Many have
closely examined our beliefs, faith and even
our understanding of our fellow Americans.
Ultimately, we have all done significant
soul searching to try and fathom the current
state of affairs. He spoke about the new
Republican Growth and Opportunity
Project, a document that examines the
election, provides analysis and makes
recommendations for the Party. It expertly
breaks down the results of the election and
demonstrated areas where conservatives
could improve in upcoming elections.
Many of the incorrect assumptions and
misunderstandings about the Project were
dispelled. He recommended that we all
become familiar with it and issued a call to
action for us to form grass roots activism,
participate in local government, to stay
informed, and to get involved.
Most of the audience felt very uplifted
by Armstrong’s presentation. His closing
comment, as he implored us to stay in the
fight, was: “We’re fighting for the very
soul of our Nation and our Country is worth
fighting for.”

CAN YOU SAY MMMMM CHOCOLATE? By: Marilyn Manford, Hospitality Chairman
To everyone who donated a chocolate dessert for our Chocolate
Extravaganza in February, THANK YOU! We had an incrEDIBLE
turnout. So many yummy desserts to sample and take home. It was a very
successful fundraiser and it was because of YOU. Bar-W's membership is
the absolute best! The chocolate just kept coming and coming until the
tables couldn't hold any more.
My waistline may not appreciate it much, but from the bottom of my
heart I want to say THANK YOU members. You're an amazing group of

described as the dumbing-down of
our educational system by
promoting a new, simpler math and
requiring reading of informational
texts (read “instruction manuals”)
instead of the classics. In addition,
there will be extensive tracking and
data mining of student and family
information. CSCOPE is the Texas
version of Common Core. It was
created so that teachers could frame
their year around the teaching points
required by the state with lessons
updated and delivered online, thus
making it more cost-effective than
standard textbooks. CSCOPE has
been used by the majority of school
districts since 2006. It is considered
instructional material rather than
curriculum. As such, is not subject
to State Board of Education
regulation. It is worth noting that
CSCOPE lesson plans eliminate
topics such as National Values,
American Exceptionalism, the Core
Principles of the United States
Constitution and American Military
History—along with any mention of
Christianity and Judaism. These
precepts have been replaced by
fairness and instruction on American
Propaganda and Imperialism.
Recent national news stories
about Texas have cited history
lessons identifying “terrorists” as
“freedom fighters” and the Boston
Tea Party as an “act of terrorism”.
In addition, students at one school
were asked to design a flag for a
Socialist nation. At another school,
students were instructed to recite a
Pledge of Allegiance to another
country and sing its National
Anthem in the language of that
nation. At yet another school, a
lesson on Islam required high school
girls to dress in burqas to help them
learn about the liberated life of
Islamic women. This class
concluded with an assignment to
write a paper on how Egypt was
destroyed by democracy and how
this destruction will be corrected
now that the Muslim Brotherhood is
in power. Another example is the
social studies lesson, which teaches
that Communism is the highest
attainable economic system, as it
allows all people to work together
for everyone. Capitalism is
described as a system in which
people fulfill their own needs and
wants without consideration of
others. And you want to know the
best part about all of this? Above
and beyond common factual
mistakes and grammatical errors,
teachers were legally required under
CSCOPE contracts to teach only
CSCOPE and were not permitted to
discuss the content with parents or
members of the community!
Fortunately, all of this came to
the attention of the Texas
Legislature and specifically the
Texas Senate Education Committee
under the chairmanship of Senator
Dan Patrick (R-District 7). By early
February, immediate action brought
about sweeping changes to the
CSCOPE program. The Texas
Education Service Center
Curriculum Collaborative, which
created and maintains CSCOPE,
agreed to eliminate its Privacy
Policy, post Lesson Plans on its
public website, allow Review Panels
and end its Non-profit 501(c)3
arrangement. In addition, school
districts were notified that the
CSCOPE lessons are not intended to
be taught verbatim and that the
lessons should be used solely as a
resource. This means teachers are
once again able to teach what they
feel is appropriate. However, there
is still much to be done to ensure
appropriate review and maintenance
of the content of the well over 1500
CSCOPE lesson plans. This means
active engagement by not only our
Legislators and educators, but by
parents and others from
communities as well. Children of
all ages are impressionable. One
only has to look back on the Young
Pioneers of the Soviet Union or
Hitler Youth to see how they were
sculpted and molded as instruments
of those ideologies. It appears that
there are those who want to see
something similar in the New
Global Society and New World
Order.

S ummer is around the corner and once again the
panic sets in for wanting to get fit, FAST!
Here is a sure-fire plan that will help you get the
fitness you are looking for in as little as one month. The
key is you have to make the
commitment to a daily
routine. I’ve outlined a plan
for you that will crank up your
calorie burn by alternating a
variety of walking routines—
everything from moderately
paced jaunts to high-speed
intervals. You will want to
start and finish each of your
workouts with five minutes of
slow walking to warm up and
cool down.
Easy Walk – Monday, Wednesday & Friday
It’s ‘easy’ because you really will not be pushing
yourself hard. The goal is to walk at a pace that you
might use if you were 5 minutes late to an appointment.
You should feel a slightly elevated heart rate.
Week 1: 30 minutes Week 3: 40 minutes
Week 2: 35 minutes Week 4: 45 minutes
Interval Walk – Tuesday & Thursday
Here’s where you will pick up the pace – and your
calorie burn – for about 30 to 90 seconds – before slowing
down to catch your breath. During the speed interval, you
should be walking so that you’re breathing hard.
Week 1: 5 minutes at moderate pace, 30 second
speed interval. Repeat 4 times = 22 minutes
Week 2: 5 minutes at moderate pace, 60 second
speed interval. Repeat 4 times = 24 minutes
Week 3: 5 minutes at moderate pace, 90 second
speed interval. Repeat 4 times = 26 minutes
Week 4: 5 minutes at moderate pace, 60 second
speed interval. Repeat 5 times – 30 minutes
Speed Walk – Saturday
Pick an easy to remember route that will take about 30
minutes to complete at a fast pace. Each week, try to
cover the same distance in less time.
Long Walk – Sunday
This is your endurance workout. Walk at a pace you
can comfortably sustain for the recommended time.
Focus on enjoying your walk, not on your pace.
Week 1: 45 minutes Week 3: 55 minutes
Week 2: 50 minutes Week 4: 60 minutes

W members are aware, active and
busy. We work, we volunteer, we
raise families. Our days are full to
overflowing. But most of us spend
our days with one or two groups of
people who represent specialized
interests. For example, PTA
volunteers are busy with other parents
of school-age children; our regular
church activities are with other

in our Bar-W meetings allows us
monthly access to meet with like-
minded men and women; our
workplaces and co-workers are
focused on a product or services.
If you’d like to spend a couple of
hours to meet new people, help Bar-
W raise funds for our community
projects and discuss the issues that are
facing our country today, I have the
answer! Bar-W has four events
coming up that will provide you with
the opportunity to do all that and
more. Each is a different venue and
each attracts a different group of
people. We will be participating in
events that are Shopping and Family
Activity-focused, an event focused on
Physical Fitness to raise money for
Seniors’ Activities and one that
benefits the Bulverde Community
Center. The listing and the dates are
below. I had the opportunity to
participate in each one last year and
can’t wait for this years! So if you
want to interact with our community
in a different way than you do today,
please join me for a couple of hours
on one (or more) of these days. I
know you will enjoy and benefit from
the time spent, and I know I will
enjoy your company! Just email me
at [email protected] or call 210-573-
8274 and let me know that you can
join me as we represent Bar-W in our
community.

CONGRATULATIONS—TAD! By: Hazel Roman, Bar-W Founder
T oni Anne Dashiell
has a history with
Bar-W, and we are proud that
she was there when we took
our first step. Over the years
she has watched us grow, and
we have watched her rise in
the Texas political arena.
She has held several
positions on the Board of
Directors of the Texas Federation of Republican Women
(TFRW). When we first met, she was the TFRW Deputy
President Region IX and the keynote speaker at the first
meeting of Bar-W (see photo above). She rose to be the
President of TFRW in 2008-2009 and continues to be active in
the organization.
Currently she serves as the Chairman of the Republican
Party of Kendall County. She is the co-author of “Leading for
Freedom” and has traveled around the world teaching and
inspiring women about political democracy.
We continue to be proud of Toni Anne as she steps into the
National political arena where she will represent Texas as the
National Committeewoman on the RNC.
