Finally, the summer is upon us. It is the season “to go out into the woods” and explore nature. I have no doubt that many of us have plans this summer to clear our minds, rest and rejuvenate in nature. When we are in the midst of natural beauty, there is something that gets revived in us.

The “WOW” factor is experienced as we realize some of our longings, and missteps in our lives. Being in the presence of natural beauty is not just a beautiful aes-thetic moment; it is an opportunity to review our lives. “I found myself in a dark wood, having lost the way”.

Dante begins one of his works with a stark affirmation: “Midway in life’s journey, I found myself in a dark wood, having lost the way.” The spiritual pilgrimage into the woods in order to reimagine who we are and finding ourselves is a common feature among differ-ent cultures and religions. We go into the woods to rediscover what we are missing. We disconnect from our daily lives. We give ourselves a chance to not be distracted by civilization, our cell phones and our daily chores. Going into the woods, with this attitude in mind, is a courageous act.

There is a Jewish story that reminds us of what contact with nature can do for us.

“If we were to walk in the woods and a spring ap-peared just when we became thirsty, we would call it a miracle. And if on a second walk, if we became thirsty at just that point again, and again the spring appeared, we would remark on the coincidence. But if that spring were there always, we would take it for granted and cease to notice it. Yet is that not more miraculous still?”

Going out into the woods offers us the challenge to re-new our souls. It offers us the opportunity to re-discov-er our sense of AWE and WONDER. In nature, seeing ‘a spring’ can inspire us to think beyond the material world, into our spiritual selves.

Rabbi Yisroel ben Eliezer, often called Baal Shem Tov or Besht, was a Jewish mystical rabbi. He is consid-ered to be the founder of Hasidic Judaism. It is told that at school, he distinguished himself only by his

frequent disappearances, being always found in the lonely woods surrounding the place, rapturously en-joying the beauties of nature.

Among the many stories about the Baal Shem Tov’s life are about his time spent in isolated prayer and communication with God in the Carpathian Moun-tains. His later followers, and most especially his great-grandson Rebbe Nachman of Breslov, said that going out into the woods and nature to speak to God in our own language is the secret to spiritual growth for every Jew and every human being.

A profound story is told:

When the Baal Shem Tov had a difficult task to per-form, he would go to a certain place in the woods, light a fire, and meditate on the secrets of his heart, and his prayer was answered.

A generation later, the Maggid of Mezritch was faced with the same task. He would go to the same place that the Baal Shem Tov went and he would say, “I no longer know how to light the fire but I still say the prayer.” And it was done.

A generation later, Moshe Leib of Sassov, when he had to perform this task, went to the woods and said “I can no longer light the fire nor do I know the secret medi-tation of the prayer but at least I know the place.” And it was accomplished.

In the next generation, Rabbi Israel of Rizhin, when he had a problem sat down and said, “I cannot light the fire, I cannot speak the prayer, I do not even know the place but I can tell the story of how it was done.” And the story had the same effect.

When there is a difficult task to perform, going into the woods might help us find our way.

Going into the woods can be the secret to our spiritual growth.

May this summer offer to each one of us the oppor-tunity to re-new ourselves as we reconnect with the beautiful nature that surrounds us.

What a great end to a school year! For those of you who did not know, I graduated from the Univer-sity of Michigan, Frankel Institute of Judaic Studies with my Master’s in Judaic Studies. I was honored with the Simeon Binberg Outstand-ing Master’s Student Award and spoke at the Frankel

Institute’s Graduation Party.

If you know me, you know I can’t just speak. I have to sing; so I opened with “L’chi Lach” by Debbie Friedman and closed with “Beyond” by Dan Nichols. I was excited that the majority of the attendees also knew the blessings and sang along, it was truly a very special afternoon! The title of my master’s thesis is The Rise and Fall of the Grand Cantor in the American Reform Movement, which takes a look at the occupation and vocation of the shaliach tzibbur, hazzan, cantor, and cantorial soloist within the Reform Movement, specifically in the United States, through a case study of Temple Emanu-El and through the eyes of a Cantorial Soloist (me). I attempt to answer two questions in this thesis, where does the shaliach tzibbur and soloist, the non-ordained/non-certified congregational leader fit into the musical history of the Reform Movement, and what is the historical link of the cantor to our Jewish past? I first show that although it is nice to believe that the cantor is linked to the ancient Leviti-cal singer, this belief is a very big stretch to the imagination. Instead I show that there is a vocation of individuals who are receptors, keepers, and distributors of our musical traditions and how that vocation changes throughout Jewish history. I then focus on the Reform Movement and its musical tradi-tion. I used Temple Emanu-El’s musical history that almost parallels the musical history of the Reform Movement. I showed how music was one of the main things that separated the Reform Movement from the other movements and how, from literally the second meeting, Temple Emanu-El (then The Suburban Temple of Greater Detroit) placed music in a position of great importance.

What I discovered was that we were the only congregation in the early 1950’s that could boast about having a 30 plus member adult choir that sang every Erev Shabbat and a 60 plus member youth choir that sang for festivals and special youth Shabbatot. I also learned that out of our 65 years 32 of those years our congregation was, and still is, led by lay in-dividuals (shaliach tzibbur or soloists). In the early years the music of Temple Emanu-El was in the “Presentation” style

of the High German Classic Reform genre, composers such as Janowski, Lewandowski, Binder, Davidson etc… as it was the majority of the congregations in the Reform Movement prior to the opening of the HUC School of Sacred Music in 1948. Following WWII there was a push for congregations to hire cantors. This time period is what I called the time of the “Grand Cantor” 1950’s – 1970’s. This time was when Temple Emanu-El had hired Cantor Norman Rose z”l. Following Cantor Rose, our congregation was led for seven years by Judy Lewis and Steve Klaper. Our music moved towards a “Participatory” style towards more folk/camp genre with composers such as Debbie Friedman, Craig Taubman, Dan Nichols and others, as it did with the Reform Movement. Temple then had four years with Cantor Darcie Sharlein at the helm who brought us into a mix of the presentation and participation styles. I consider myself incredibly blessed to follow in the footsteps of such wonderful musicians and mentors that have made it possible for me to create worship services that are representative of the past and the future of Temple Emanu-El. I am literally the product of Temple Ema-nu-El’s musical history! I want to thank all of you for your support over these past four years. I am so looking forward to putting my education to work!

Travis Kaye - June 11

Travis Edward Kaye will be called to the Torah on Saturday, June 11 2016. He is the son of Keith Kaye and Jill Noll, brother of Aden Kaye, and grandson of Donald and Janet Kaye and Carl and Patricia Noll. Travis is in 7th grade at Norup International Middle School where he recently was inducted into the National Junior Honor Society. He enjoys play-ing soccer and cello. He also loves nature and bird watching. For his mitzvah project, Travis volunteered at D-Town Farms with Peer Corps.

Hannah Danzig - June 18On June 18, 2016, Hannah Louise Danzig will be called to the Torah. Hannah is the daughter of Dan and Jannis Danzig and sister to Natalie. Hannah is a seventh grader at Derby Middle School. She was invited to join the National Junior Honor Society and plays on the Derby Girls Tennis team. For her Mitzvah Project, Hannah joined Peer Corp where she spent weekends working at Eden Gardens. Hannah also enjoys traveling, dancing and baking. Family

and friends traveling from Israel and California will share this simcha with Hannah.

As the last day of Religious School came to an end, we had the wonderful opportunity to have Kelly Onickel, the Sam Harris Band and members of her adult and student choirs perform a concert for all grades. We listened, we sang and we laughed. It was also a chance to thank our teachers for doing such a wonderful job educating our students (no easy task!).

The last day that the High School met was a field trip of their choice. Sur-prisingly they didn’t select anything elaborate. All they wanted to do was to hang out with each other (and me) and sit and talk about the past year, summer plans and of course for the seniors -- what next year will hold.

I don’t know about anyone else; but, it was a wonderful end to a wonderful year!

We will be arriving in Michi-gan in July and anticipate a wonderful year ahead for all of us. My children will be starting school in September and are excited to be on this new adventure.

The Yachad Religious School (K-7), Temple High School/Young Adult Program and family and community education programs this coming year

will be welcomed opportunities to get to know the community as we work together to bring renewed energy to our Jewish Learning. It has been one year since the closing of the JCC. We were faced with many challenges in repurposing our building to accommodate our precious babies. In spite of all our apprehensions, the babies have been a true joy. Even our 3-year-olds love watching them and seeing them take their first steps. Our staff truly came together as a team to create the loving nurturing environment that we are known for.

Once again, our Young Master’s Art Show was enjoyed by all of our families. With art projects created through-

out the year, the growth and development of the children, as well as their creativity, were reflected throughout the building.

Our annual Shalom celebrations are taking place with another school year coming to a close. Many of our children have been with us from “womb to room” thereby becoming an integral part of our Early Childhood Commu-nity. I know the experiences our staff have given the children have provided them with the confidence and tools for success in their future education.

As we anxiously await the arrival of summer, we encourage you to take the opportunity to share the beauty of nature with your children. Take time to lie on the grass and watch the trees blowing in the wind. Provide an oppor-tunity for children to help care for plants, both indoors and outdoors. Feed the ducks, watch the clouds and the birds, look at the sun, moon and stars, take time to smell the roses and remember to play.

Day camp will begin on Monday, June 20th. Our Camp Run About camp-ers will enjoy fun in the sun with water play, outdoor play, Moon Jump, and special visitors such as Bubbles the Clown. Camp Get-Away children will enjoy weekly field trips and special performances by Ben Spitzer and Paula Doak, among others.

I wish all dads a happy and relaxing Father’s Day. making Temple more Accessible and Inclusive

One of Temple’s Vision-ing Goals is to make the Temple more accessible. We want to make our front entrance handicap-accessible. This is a

significant project with an estimated cost of $7,150. Over $4500 has been raised so far through the generosity of David and Kathy Sloan, members who contributed to our Candy for the Troops campaign, Bea Sacks Social Action Commit-tee’s matching contribution following that effort, and pledges from Brotherhood and Sisterhood-WRJ.

We want to have this project completed by the upcoming High Holidays. If you would like to con-tribute to this worthwhile project or have any questions, please contact Fred Frank or Abby Goldfaden in the Temple office.

GREET….AnD MEET!!Did you know that a little bit of history is now rejuvenating a good idea? Our old, yet beauti-ful library card catalog now holds our member’s nametags. You’ll find it right next to the cabinetry in the foyer.

Why name tags you ask? Let me share a few thoughts…

• Few people know everyone in our Temple and you shouldn’t assume everyone knows you

• Some leaders, whether lay leaders (like myself) or professional leaders, are not always gifted with the memory skill of knowing everyone’s name. As leaders we really do prefer calling members by name, and the nametags allow us to do this.

• It makes it easier and much more comfortable to go up to someone and say “Hi _____”, “I’m ____ and I don’t think we’ve met before.” This interaction is almost guaranteed to start a conversation.

• Nametags prevent the “oops” of calling someone by the wrong name.

• Guests should be able to call members by name and vice versa (yes, tags are available for guests). This sends a welcome message of “we’re glad to know you.”

I know some members may not yet feel comfortable wearing a name tag during a service, but please try and do so at the Oneg Shabbats, and for the many other congregational events held at temple – such as the movie nights, monthly Shabbat dinners, etc. As a congregation, let’s try and take our “welcoming temple” to an-other level. Let’s make this an attempt to show that we enjoy being together with our kind, friendly, temple family.

The members of the Caring Community of Temple Emanu-El prepare and deliver Shabbat dinners to bereaved Temple members, and soup and bread to members recovering from illness and members and moth-ers of the Early Childhood Community who have recently given birth.

Dear Congregants,

For the past decade, Temple members have helped sustain the small Jewish community in Brovary, Ukraine, with donations four times a year (at Rosh Hashanah, Chanukah, Pass-over and July 4th). The need is always great. Recently, things have gotten worse.

Through Natasha Stonov, our Chicago-based translator and liaison, we’ve learned that there has been a rash of thefts targeting wires and cables in the apartment buildings where many our Brovary families live. As a result, they are without telephone and internet service. David Turovsky, leader of Brovary’s Jewish community, worries that “senior citi-zens may have an emergency but no way to report it.” Additionally, the price of utilities is expected to double, and for most senior citizens the monthly price for utilities has risen to equal their monthly pension.

As for the police, they are in no hurry to help, David adds.

He and his wife, Raissa, say they and their fellow Jews are resilient.

“After all, we are former Soviet people, accustomed to more severe ordeals, and expect harder times ahead.” They are all deeply touched by Temple’s caring.

Yet what is so scary for these people, many of who are Holocaust/Chernobyl survivors, is that their lives only go from crisis to crisis.

So please, if you can, drop off or mail in a check to the temple’s Social Action Fund, for Brovary… we may be one of their last sources of help and we don’t know how long our Social Action budget can sustain this effort.
