From the President
W ell, I now find myself writing my second article for your Shofar, I
can’t believe that four weeks have passed since I became Acting
President. See, I was always told time flies when you are hav-
ing fun. I can now tell you honestly my friends, that I can’t say that I have had
a whole lot of fun. We still have a lot of areas that desperately need your
help. During the next coming weeks I will be calling and asking for your help.
I can’t stress enough the importance of team work. This is OUR Temple and
if we are going to ensure its continued existence we need to ALL WORK TO-
GETHER to be successful.
I am well aware that most of you have, in the past, worked very hard to keep
your Temple alive and keeping it within the traditions that we all grew up lov-
ing and respecting. Well, it’s time to do it again. I know that chairing a com-
mittee is not an easy job, but what if we had two people sharing the responsi-
bility and had several helpers. Do you think that
would ease the workload and help in get more
people interested?
We are open to any and all suggestions that
you may have to help us get the job at hand
done.
Please take some time to think things over, try to
picture yourself helping out in one of the activities
where you would best be the most comfortable
and give it a try. Give me a call and let me know
where you would like to help out. I am certain that
we can and will accomplish our mission.
Sharon R. Weber
Acting President Congregation Beth Shalom
As of Sunday, May 21, 2017,

ple and I am personally look-
ing forward to working closely
with him.
On behalf of the Congrega-
tion and the Board of Direc-
tors of Congregation Beth
Sholom, we would like to
congratulate Bill and wel-
come him to his new post.
Thank you, Bill, for volunteer-
ing your time.

Is this division a unique-ly American phenomenon? This class will attempt to answer these questions by exploring the history, beliefs, practices and sociology of the Orthodox, Conservative and Reform movements as well as some of the lessor-known groups such as Reconstructionist and Renewal and the various sects of Hasidism.

From the Hazzan’s Study
Beginning with this month of June and continuing in July and August, things slow down a lot in most
synagogues. The hustle and bustle of a busy congregation dissipates and attendance at Shabbat
services declines compared to the rest of the year. People are away—there are vacations from
school and work, traveling or lounging by the pool or at the ocean. The days are longer and hotter
all over the country.
However, these three months leading up to the High Holidays can be a time of opportunity. Similar
to the way that Shabbat is described as a day “to refresh one’s soul”, so too can the summer
months be a time to “refresh”—both soul and body.
If you haven’t been to a service lately at Beth Sholom, why not come and try it? If you’re traveling,
why not attend a service in another community? If you have time to lounge by the pool, why not
bring along a book of Jewish content—a classic piece of American Jewish fiction, a book relating to
the State of Israel or a book on the changing practices in American synagogues in the twenty-first
century?
You might use these months to consider ways of enhancing your personal observances of Jewish
rituals—whether at home or away.
Take advantage of these summer months and refresh your Jewish body and soul. Who knows?
You might feel more “awake” Jewishly by the time Rosh Hashanah arrives in September.
I wish everyone a wonderful and “refreshing” summer!

From Hadassah
Dear Members and Friends of Hadassah Beverly Hills
M onday, May 8,2017 Hadassah Beverly Hills met for our
end-of-the-year luncheon at Joe’s Family Restaurant in
Inverness.
The Ocala group came in force and we were so happy to welcome them. We hope Susan Johnson
and Sharon Weber will join us soon. Sharon Weber is the new President of Congregation Beth Shol-
om. Which reminds me that we need a president too. Our chapter needs new blood and Michele
Garelick looked for a Hadassah group for two years.
It was a lovely lunch.
We are looking forward to a great summer. Our next year meeting will be on Monday, September
11,2017 a week after Labor Day. We also plan to meet at my house in August to plan next year’s
schedule. I will email the date. We hope to revive our always successful card and game party in
February.
Ellen Reuter plans to have a new membership list with email addresses . She also got help from
Bunny Benstock to edit the bulletin. As always we have trees and cards from Hadassah.
I can’t believe that the year passed already. I am looking forward for my trip to Israel in the month
of June. I will try to bring new ideas from Israel.
Have a great healthy summer,
Shalom, Miriam Fagan
We are transitioning from a few people doing everything (serving on the board, chairing commit-
tees, leading programs, setting up, cleaning up) to a culture where everyone shares in the effort.
Think about something YOU could do and let Sharon Weber know! She and all of Congregation
Beth Sholom will be most grateful.

Recent Shabbat Dinner Favorite:
Chicken Shawarma
Thank you to Simcha Yael for providing this recipe.
Ingredients:
2 teaspoons turmeric 2 teaspoons coriander 2 teaspoons cumin 2 teaspoons paprika 1 teaspoon black pepper 2 pounds boneless chicken thighs and 1 pound bone-less chicken breasts 1 large onion 2 teaspoons chopped garlic 3 teaspoons of extra virgin olive oil
Preheat oven to 350˚
1. Combine the first five ingredients (spices). Mix the spices so you can no longer tell them apart.
2. After washing chicken, cut up into bite-size pieces and place into large bowl. Mix spices with chicken (reserve one
teaspoon of spices for later).
3. Cover bowl tightly with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least two hours. Overnight is ideal. Remove chicken from
refrigerator approximately 20 minutes before cooking.
4. Dice the onion. Add oil to skillet and once the oil is warm, add the onions. Once the onions have softened and start-
ed to cook, add the garlic and remaining teaspoons of spices. Sautee for a few more minutes.
5. Add onion mixture into bowl of chicken and mix well.
6. Pour into half-size steam table pan (11 ¾ x 9 ¼ x 2 ½). Bake at 350 degrees uncovered for 40 minutes: stir pan
after 20 minutes and then cook for another 20 minutes.
7. Serve in pita with hummus, t’hina and Israeli salad or on a plate with rice pilaf and salads.
Serves 6 – 8 people.
