Meet the newest member of our team!We are excited to announce that Melanie Sanders has joined

Salina Downtown, Inc. as Administrative Assistant! Please stop by the office and welcome her.

“I am a long time citizen of Salina. I graduated from Salina Central and moved away for a period of time, but came back to Salina to get married and start a family. I live very close to the downtown district and enjoy the benefits of being involved in the close knit community. I enjoy reading, gardening, cooking and hanging out with my family and friends. I am excited to be a part of Salina Downtown, Inc!” ~Melanie Sanders

Interview 200 of your customers this year…

Consultants Kizer & Bender reminded us during Salina Downtown’s Annual Meeting on March 15th that it is important to look at your business through your customer’s eyes. It takes the consumer ten seconds – yes, 10 seconds! - from walking in your

door to decide whether or not they like the place. One or two bad experiences and you’ve lost them as a customer forever! This rings true no matter if you’re in retail, restaurant, or the service industry. So, challenge yourself, ask 200 of your customers (really…it’s less than one a day!) this one question…

“What is the one thing that we can do to make your experience better?”

The 2015 Downtown Partner of the Year Award goes to…

Every year Salina Downtown, Inc. recognizes partnerships that have greatly impacted our community, especially downtown. This year’s Partner of the Year is no exception. They share their time and talents without any compensation, and never ask for anything in return. With their passion and willingness to jump in and help wherever needed, we proudly dedicate the 2015 Downtown Partner of the Year Award to the Salina Area Chamber of Commerce.

CJ Maltbie began her involvement in the Chamber through Salina Area Young Professionals (SAYP) and soon became a familiar face at Chamber functions. This year, CJ stepped in to lead the charge on a new SAYP committee, Salina Scenes. In her first four months as committee chair, CJ has secured multiple sponsors, co-hosted poetry readings, planned an SAYP concert, and hosted a March Madness party with her employer, Nex-Tech Wireless, amongst many other contributions. This marked her first year as a Chamber Ambassador and Leadercast planning committee member. In addition, CJ is a lifetime Salina resident, supporter of Salina Arts and Humanities, Relay for Life Co-Captain, and Bowl for Kids’ Sake participant.

“My goal is to bring new ideas for culture, arts, and entertainment to fruition by supporting those who create and inspire,” said CJ. “My favorite thing about Salina and SAYP is being a part of something bigger than myself. There are thousands of young people in our town that feel that Salina isn’t in the position to feed their creative minds. If I can be a voice for our artists, poets, musicians – to show that there are so many of us with the same common goal – maybe we can grow in population, give people a reason to stay in Salina,” she continued.

The SAYP is grateful to have CJ’s enthusiasm, passion, and get-it-done attitude to help lead the group. Thanks CJ!

On May 6, visionary leaders will descend on the Salina Community Theatre from 8am - 3:30pm for the world’s largest one-day leadership event, Leadercast, broadcast live from Atlanta to thousands of viewers at hundreds of locations across the globe, including Salina.

Leadercast will explore what it means to be a visionary and an “Architect of Tomorrow.” Visionary leaders must have the ability to see a preferred future, operate in the present, and utilize the resources around them to architect a clear path to a new destination. With speakers such as Steve Wozniak, Nick Saban, Kat Cole, and more, Leadercast Salina will equip attendees with insights and tools that will enhance capabilities as a visionary leader.

In addition, Salina will host a group of local visionaries, alongside the

globally broadcasted leadership speakers. This group has been working for 2 years to redevelop Downtown Salina. They have

built their ideas around the Downtown $11,000,000 Field House project. Their vision is to elevate Salina to a level of competitiveness that attracts people, businesses, and events to our community for decades into the future. Leadercast Salina is thrilled to welcome Larry Britegam, Guy Walker, and Don Boos of the group known as Salina 2020 Inc. These three leaders will speak to how and why a group takes on a $140 million project and enrolls a community in the process to reach the point they are at today.

To purchase your ticket call the Salina Area Chamber of Commerce at 785-827-9301 or email Hayley at [email protected]. A limited number of tickets are available.

The Salina Area Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors recently took action to support the special sales tax issue being presented by the City of Salina. The proposal is to increase the current special sales tax which has funded Kenwood Cove and other City initiatives from .4% to .75%. In a media release about the decision, SACC Board President Brian Richardson said, “Sales tax is an attractive funding mechanism for Salina. An estimated 30% of our sales tax revenue is generated by non-residents…also users of our facilities, infrastructure and amenities.” Richardson continued, “If we want to remain being a desired community to live, work, and visit, we need to take progressive steps for that to happen.”

The Chamber will present two forums for members to learn more about the sales tax issue, where the proposed dollars would be used, and how the community will be affected. Plan to attend on Tuesday, April 19 at either 7-8am, or 4-5pm, in the Visit Salina Annex, 120 W. Ash. See the enclosed flyer for more details.
