There are three major forest types: evergreen rainforest in the west characterised by abundance of Okoumé & Ozigo, the central Gabonese forest covering most of the country with abundance of species like Azobé & Ayous and semi-deciduous forest with dominance of Limba, Wenge &
Ayous. With a low overall population density and 60% of population living in urban areas, there is little anthropogenic pressure on Gabon’s forests. Gabonese Republic (2008) indicated an average annual deforestation rate of 0.12% i.e. 10,000 ha per year. All forest in Gabon is owned by the state. The 2001 Forest Code divides forest into two categories i.e. First Category (13.5 million hectares) include Production PFE managed by private concessionaires and the protection PFE managed directly by the state. The Second Category (8.3 million hectares), the non-PFE, known as domaine rural, includes open access forest for hunting, agriculture, mining and gathering of NTFPs, sacred forests and community protected area for which rights are limited to local communities.

Over the past ten years, Gabon
has gone through a profound process
of reform affecting the forest and
environment. A new forest law has come
into force that emphasizes Sustainable
Forest Management (SFM) as the
overall approach in the forestry. Forest
Management plans are fully developed
for 3.45 million hectares of forest in
concessions and were under preparation
for another 6 million hectares of forest
in concessions as in 2011. An estimated
2.42 million hectares of the natural
production PFE is under SFM, including
1.87 million hectares of forest were
certified under the FSC (some of them
also had ISO 14001 and Keurhout
certificates) as of June, 2010.
Forestry is, and will remain, one of
the pillars of Gabon’s economic and social development. The private sector has become
a major driver of industrial forest development and the export of forest products.
Gabonese Republic has introduced a system to institutionalize community forestry as
a way of meeting local needs for timber and other forest products.Gabon has a low
deforestation rate, forests rich in valuable timber species and among the best prospects
for a healthy and sustainable forest industry. Reforestation has been continuously
promoted, and selective thinning and clearing have prevented the over exploitation.
Over 50 firms are engaged in exploitation of Gabon’s forests. Forest concessions
covering about 12 million hectares have been granted by the Gabonese Republic. The
timber industry is already the largest private sector employer, employing 28% of the
working population, and represents an extremely significant growth potential.
Gabonese Republic is aiming to turn Gabon into a
world leader in certified tropical timber production
through an industrial strategy aimed at sustainably
managing timber stocks and by promoting secondary
and tertiary processing.

Timber Species… the Red Gold from Gabon
Gabon’s forests offers enormous possibilities with a logging potential of 12.5
million hectares with more than 400 species.Until 2010 i.e. before ban on export of raw
logs, Gabon was the largest exporter of raw wood in the region, and its sales represent
20% of Africa’s raw wood exports.Gabon’s reserves of exploitable timber is estimated
to upwards of 400 million CBM which includes 130 million CBM of Okoumé, 15-25
million CBM of Azobé and 10-20 million CBM of Padouk.
Commercial forest harvesting in Gabon began as early as 1892, but only in 1913
was Okoumé, Gabon’s most valuable wood, introduced to the international market.
Gabon supplies 90% of the world’s Okoumé, known worldwide for the production of
plywood. Its attractive appearance means that it is often used decoratively as the top
surface veneer in panelling and furniture or, in solid form in luxury items such as boxes
for cigars or other high value items (e.g. audio equipment). Physical and mechanical
properties: Widely recognised as one the world’s best materials for rotary cut veneers,
Okoumé timber is easy to work and is as suitable for the manufacturing of furniture
as for interior joinery. Moreover, it is a species of a very even colour, good bonding
performances and good compatibility with finished products.
Hardwood Species like Sapelli, Sipo, Acajou, Andoung, Gheombi from Gabon
are Pinkish Red to Brownish in colour and are similar to Genuine Mahogany
(Swieteniamacrophylla) in terms of colour, appearance and density. These timber
species could very well serve as an alternative for Mahogany as it is listed in CITES
Appendix II. These species are suited for luxury and high end furniture and joinery. This
is the reason for their high demand in Europe and USA due to its colour perception. They
are exported in high volume to China, Vietnam and Malaysia, as they are the biggest

Wenge is the premier dark hardwood
from the forests of Gabon and suitable
for contemporary interiors as it blends
quite well with glass and stainless steel.
Due to its dark colour, it is well suited for
straight/clean line furniture and is quite
popular in Europe.
Iroko, Beli, Tali and Okan species can
be considered as alternative species to

are quite popular in Asia and Middle
East for furniture and joinery. Tali and
Okan are extensively used in furniture
manufacturing in Vietnam, mainly
for export and has helped Vietnam to
become second largest exporter of
furniture after China. Furniture made out
of these species is very popular in Asian and American markets.
Light colour tropical wood species from Gabon includes Izombe, Movingui and
Bilinga. These species have appearance similar to Merbau / Kwila and are suitable for
furniture as well as joinery and interiors.
Kevazingo (Guibourtia Spp.) is the most expensive and coveted wood species from
the forests of Gabon. Trunk diameter of 150 cm is quite common for Kevazingo. Live-
edge table tops made from it is in high demand in China because of its natural beauty

Padouck is a dark coloured
redwood found in Gabon; quite similar
to Rosewood and suitable for outdoor
furniture as well as joinery. Outdoor
flooring, decking and garden furniture
made out of it is exported to European
markets. It is resistant to damage from
weather elements. Padouck is also very
popular in southern part of India due to
its red colour and high density. Door and
door frames made from Padouck are
very popular in the Asian markets.
Gabon … change just begun
In last decade, African countries
have promoted the idea of processing of
natural resources within their countries itself so as to generate jobs and give boost to
their economy. Following the same ideology, Gabonese Republic also banned exports of
raw logs in 2010. Thereafter, in order to facilitate the secondary and tertiary processing
of timber and other natural resources within the country, Gabonese Republic has
embarked on a journey to provide amenable ecosystem and infrastructure. In the
same pursuit, Gabonese Republic developed 1126 hectares SEZ at Nkok in partnership
with Olam International, Singapore to provide ready and reliable infrastructure. Gabon
SEZ offers an array fiscal incentives to industrial investors which includes complete
exemption from all taxes (income tax, corporate tax, capital gain, MAT, VAT, customs,
Property Tax), reduced rate of export duty (0-2%) and permission for 100% repatriation
of profits.
Gabon Wood Hub... First Furniture Manufacturing Cluster in Central Africa
Nkok SEZ also has 60,000 square meters of ready to use sheds as Furniture
Manufacturing Cluster to promote manufacturing of finished products i.e. furniture in
Gabon. Shed are provided on rental model in module of 500 square meters to furniture
manufacturers intending to start their unit in Furniture Manufacturing Cluster. The

Manufacturing Process Audit for Furniture factories?
We observe that most of the furniture factories do undertake the financial audit in order
to check their financial situation and to review the performance of the company. This
helps them in planning for their future actions and projections. It is also noticed that this
helps the company a lot in expansions and growth, as the main revenue for the factory is
generated from the manufacturing facility they have installed.

EXPERT ADVICE
Unfortunately there are very few factories that audit their “ManufacturingProcess”.
One may wonder what is “ Manufacturing Process Audit ”.
Manufacturing Process Audit means
a systematic study of each and every
work done, whether it is small or big
work, that is done in the process of the
manufacturing of the furniture. This is
then compared with the correct standard
process that is efficient, profitable and
fast. Finally it examines the acts and
decisions by people who are responsible
for quality-productivity, in order to
independently evaluate and report the
degree of compliance to operational
requirements of the production program.
The main objective of the entire
process is to determine the extent to
which the planned production process
and capacity is ultimately achieved. This
also informs the management about
the exact working of the factory floor
with minute details like -the processes
that need improvement, the wastage of
time and material, any of the processes
that can be avoided which will improve
working. The generally observed
defective processes can be listed
like below.
No balancing of operations:
It is generally observed that the
furniture factories discuss about their
requirements with the machinery
manufacturers and come to a final conclusion about the set of machines to be ordered.
Unfortunately no consideration is given on the balancing of operations. It is many times
seen that some machines installed are very high capacity and some machines required
in chain of processare missing. Due to this reason we find lot of manual handwork in
Joinery factories even if they have purchased high capacity automatic machines. This
results in dependence on the skill of the worker and bottlenecks, delays in deliveries of
the furniture etc.
Poor maintenance of machinery & Tools:
It is also observed that the condition of machinery is very poor and cutting tools are
blunt with lot of resin deposits. One should understand that poor tools results in poor
finish and needs lot of efforts to rework.
Photo 1: Chipping due to blunt Tool
Photo 2 : wastage of glue
Wastage of glues and faulty finishing:
Many times it is seen that excess glue is applied and then the bleeding glue is
cleaned leaving glue marks. In this we loose the expensive Glue that is bleeding. The
quantity of the wasted glue is more that the glue used in the joinery. This again calls
for extra labour for cleaning. Unfortunately these points are not considered and taken
seriously. Whenever there are delays in deliveries and low out put, only additional staff
requests are sent to management. As the management is cornered there is no choice
but to add the staff. This results in low profitability. [Photo2: wastage of glue]
This is just a sample list of faulty processes & and actual report after thorough scrutiny may vary from factory to factory.
Hence many companies are opting for the Manufacturing Process Audit to get rid of
the excessive staff and bring back the profitability to the business. This audit will bring
to the notice of the factory management the serious issues on the floor and the way to
optimize the labour on the floor.

SOUTHERN YELLOW PINEPinewood
The name Southern Pine Yellow
Pine represents a group of four principal
species of pine: longleaf, shortleaf,
loblolly, and slash, that grow in a wide
belt from EastTexas to Virginia. Timber
from all four species is marketed as
Southern Yellow Pine and graded in
accordance with the grading rules of the
Southern Pine Inspection Bureau (SPIB),
approved by the American Softwood
Lumber Standards Committee.
The natural characteristics that
distinguish Southern Yellow Pine as a
versatile and durable building material
are: like High Strength - Design
values are among the highest of all
softwoods. It has earned a reputation
as the ‘Supreme Structural Wood of the
World’. Durability - Highly resistant to
wear, it is ideally suited for high traffic
applications such as pathways, decks
and flooring. It ability to hold nails and
other fasteners is among the highest of
all softwoods. Drying (or seasoning)
further enhances this capability. It has
long been a preferred species when
pressure treatment with Preservatives
is required. Its unique cellular structure
permits deep, uniform penetration of
preservatives, making it one of the few
species not requiring incising prior to
treatment.
Wood is naturally reusable, recyclable
and biodegradable, it’s the best insulator
of all structural building materials,
conserving finite fossil fuel and coal by
requiring less energy to heat and cool a
home built with wood; it takes far less
energy to transform trees into wood
products than it does to manufacture
steel, aluminum, masonry or plastic
products - and less pollution of the air
and water, too. And of course, a growing
forest removes carbon dioxide from
the atmosphere, while giving off life-
sustaining oxygen.

Turbinaire HVLP Sprayers are powered by an electric turbine that supplies a consistent flow of high volume, low pressure air ( 4-6 PSI @ 95-1130 CFM ) to the spray gun to atomize the paint or coating being applied. By spraying at low pressure, the coating doesn’t bounce back from the surface such as with conventional high-pressure sprayers. As a result Turbinaire sprayers virtually eliminate overspray and drastically reduce paint consumption.
The end results are substantial savings in coating and operating costs, a cleaner, safer work environment and a superior quality finish. This is Ideal for Woodworkers, Hobbyists, Cabinet Shops and Contractors. This assures Reduction of Overspray By Up to 90%, Savings Up

Besides staircase manu-facturers such as Thomaseth, others hoping to land the compact four-sider in the prize draw ranged from window manufacturers, sawmills and joiners to timber merchants and

The plant concept is designed specifically for smaller
capacities. Here, the CPS+ proves that it can also be the ideal
entry-level system for newcomers to the wood-based panel
market and an economic alternative for easily replacing older
single- or multi-opening presses in existing small-capacity
plants.
Panneauxd ‘Algérie is just such a newcomer. Although
the parent company BIGSTAR has been active in the wood-
based panel trade for many years, it has never produced its
own materials. That is now set to change. BIGSTAR President
GuelaiBelkacimar added: “We have great confidence in
Dieffenbacher and Dieffenbacher SWPM, and we’re very pleased
to have a working relationship with this long-standing family
business.”
The plant is designed to offer a production capacity of 250
m³ per day. Assembly will begin in the second quarter of 2018.

The elegant espresso bar is the hub of the new meeting area. A greenhouse directly next to it provides light and lets the outdoors in. This meeting zone is framed by cosy lounge furniture. Another meeting room is furnished like a traditional lounge with fireplace – it is luxurious and natural, and stylishly equipped with the company’s own kitchen furniture. Product innovations in all areas
The exhibition’s innovative character is emphasised even more by the wide range of new products. After all, contemporary, innovative kitchens are still the real stars of the setup. The two product ranges classic/classicART and systemat/systematART impress with new front and worktop designs and numerous extra features. The company’s own brand built-in Blaupunkt appliances add even more excitement with innovative features and a range that is now even wider and will be available in even more countries in future. The new presentation space also has an area dedicated to the issues of ecology and sustainability.

Press Release GERA under-cabinet light LS2P3 August 2017 Decorative lighting with shelf function: The new under-cabinet light
“Our approach of combining the functions of lighting and shelf space is perfect for
modern kitchens,” says Thomas Ritt, GERA Leuchten product manager and designer,
about the new under-cabinet light, which was shown for the first time at the interzum
2017. “Our new under-cabinet light is designed in a way that makes it possible to
position it either directly below a wall-mounted cabinet or, alternatively, wall-mounted
in kitchens without wall units, which creates additional storage space in the form of a
shelf,” says Thomas Ritt. The new lighting system emits light upwards and downwards
when wall-mounted, and downwards only if it is cabinet-mounted. This new product
is a further development of the company’s lighting system 2 and offers flexible design
options: the length of the system is fully variable, it is 170mm deep and 60mm high.
The lighting system can also be fitted with power points and a USB port, if required.
It can also be used in more ways, thanks to optionally available simple wooden frame
elements that screw into the groove. Visually, they also perfectly match the streamlined
design of the lighting system.
