General Issues

• Linked auditable fiscal data with programmatic descriptions

• Lack of communication between databases

• Cookie-cutter templates / reports

• Imposition of national-level program priorities

• Linkage with Knowledge Area (KA) codes

• Unrealistic goals requirements in POW

USDA-NIFA Priority Areas

• Childhood Obesity Prevention

• Climate Change

• Global Food Security

• Food Safety

• Sustainable Bioenergy

We have addressed the priority areas by:

• renaming and reorganizing existing planned programs

• splitting them out from our existing research and Extension programs.

Exceptions are:

• Childhood Obesity Prevention, which we have kept in Health and Wellbeing

• Climate Change, which is part of Sustainable Management of Natural Resources.

ACES Strategic Themes, Focus Areas, and Knowledge Areas

ACES research, academic, and Extension outreach activities fall into three broad strategic themes, which consist of focus areas. The focus areas are equivalent to our Plans of Work. Each is comparable to a NIFA portfolio, with associated Knowledge Areas (KAs).

Sustainable Management of Natural Resources contains KAs covering:

• Range and forest management techniques• Water and soil management techniques• Appraisals of forest and range conditions for production of

livestock forage, water yield, wildlife habitat, forest productivity, and reclamation activities

• appraisals and remediation of water, soil, and air.

These improve the economic performance and long-term protection and sustainability of New Mexico's natural resource base. Includes Climate Change.

• Animal and plant genetics/genomics, reproduction, nutrition, physiology, health, quality, stresses, and management activities, which lead to improved varieties and management techniques for New Mexico producers

• Health and protection of plants and animals in production agriculture.

How I gather accomplishments information

• Get accountability information from AES and CES faculty at performance evaluation time.

• Search NIMSS for multistate and integrated projects.

• Look for joint AES/CES appointments to identify additional integrated activities.
