How far is the Sun from Earth?

Kepler’s laws gave us a scalemodel of the relative distances ofthe planets from the Sun

To determine the mass of the Sun,we needed to know the absolutedistance

The first step is to calculate thedistance from Earth to anotherplanet

Then, using geometry and Kepler’slaws, we can calculate the distanceof the Sun from Earth

How far is the Sun?

The Venus transit technique in the1700’s gave us a good estimate of thedistance to the Sun: „ 150 million km

Recent high precision measurementshave been made by bouncing radiowaves off Venus and measuring theirtravel times

Current best estimate of theEarth–Sun distance is„ 149.6 million km

So, now we know how far the Sun isfrom us, and how long and orbit takes(1 year)

Origin of the Sun

OK, so we know the Sun is big, anddominates our Solar System

But, where did it come from? How didit form?

A theory to explain the formation ofthe Sun must also explain:

1 The Sun containing most of the mass2 The near-circular orbits of the

planets3 The planets orbiting in the same

plane as the Sun’s equator4 The planets all orbiting in the same

direction as the Sun rotates5 The inner planets are rocky and

dense; the outer planets aregaseous and large

The Nebula Hypothesis

Current theory is known as the nebula hypothesis, because itis thought that the Sun, and all of the planets, formed fromwhat is known as a nebula

Theory first developed by Kant (1755) and expanded byLaplace (1799)

What is a nebula?

A nebula is an intersteller molecularcloud of gas and dust

Composed mainly of hydrogen, helium,and molecules such as carbonmonoxide

„1% of cloud is sub-micrometer dustparticles

„1% is gaseous molecules and atomsof elements heavier than helium

Pre-collapse clouds are cold: typically„10 K (´440˝F)

The cloud was supported against selfgravity by turbulence, magnetic fields,gas pressure and centrifugal force

Cloud collapse

The nebula originally had a very lowdensity, and was several light years across

Around 4.57 billion years ago, a smalloverdensity in the cloud occurred

We don’t know for certain what causedthe overdensityMost probable scenario: a shock wavefrom a near by supernova

This more dense region started to attractmaterial from the surrounding region, andthe cloud began to contract

The contracting region grew by arunaway process, growing bigger andcausing faster contraction

As the nebula collapsed towards the center, gravitational potentialenergy was converted to kinetic energy of the gas and dustThis energy was converted to heat as particles collidedThe protosun became the hottest part of the nebula

That’s where most of the mass was concentratedWhen the central core region was hot enough (10 million K) toinitiate nuclear reactions: The Sun was born as a star

But, what stopped the cloud collapsing further?

The rotating nebula

The nebula would have been slowly rotating asit began to collapse

The laws of conservation of momentum dictatethat as something gets smaller, it must rotatefaster to conserve its angular momentum

Angular momentum = mass ˆ velocity ˆ radius

As the radius decreased during collapse, thevelocity must have increased

Gravitational collapse is more efficient along thespin axis

Resulted in a spinning disk of material, withmost of the mass concentrated at the center
