2. [Capron House] "The Mansion" - 1919 Manuscript Photo Book of the Old Capron Home in Hebron, Illinois.

A very interesting handmade viewbook with a set of 4 original photographs printed from glass negatives taken by Louis Thiers, of the Capron House in Hebron, Illinois.

"A man who did much to further the cause of scientific agriculture in this country during pioneer days, and who even introduced progressive farming methods into Japan, was General Horace Capron, who established a home in Illinois. The old Capron house on a hill near Hebron, in the vicinity of the much-visited lakes region northwest of Chicago, has become a well-known residential landmark. Horace Capron built his house in 1850, but it was not until 1854 that he occupied the mansion,

bringing to it a second wife, who was Margaret Baker of New York" (John Drury , “Old Illinois Houses", University of Chicago Press; 1977).

Kenneth K. Schaefer, writing in a Centennial history of Hebron (1936), reported- "During 1850 and early 1851 the 'Mansion' was built, the bricks and building materials being hauled from Milwaukee by slow ox team. The Capron house was a marvelous building for its day, and present-day visitors to the 'Mansion' cannot help being impressed with its spacious and multitudinous rooms, high ceilings, large fireplaces, solid mahogany spiral stairway and priceless glass chandeliers."

Horace Capron served in the Civil War, rising to the rank of brigadier general and serving for a time as an adjutant to General Grant, who was a houseguest at "The Mansion" after the war. The house still stands today (minus the cupola) as a private residence.

The 4 photographs comprise views "From the Highway", "From the South East", another southeast view, and the "Living Room". Regarding the photographer, the University of Wisconsin's website notes- "The Louis M. Thiers Glass Negative Collection (at the Kenosha County Historical Society) is comprised of over 1,000 glass plate photographic negatives. The stability of the glass plates has wonderfully preserved the images of people, homes, buildings, industries, domestic and recreational scenes, animals, landscapes, and events…primarily from the late 1880s into the early 1910s. The aesthetic appeal, strong composition, and mastery of photography demonstrated by these shots are readily apparent."

Card covers, string-tied binding. 10.25"x8.25", hand-lettered title page plus 4 leaves, each with a mounted photograph. Inside the rear cover are pasted two newspaper articles about Louisa K. Thiers, Horace Capron's sister and a founding member of the D.A.R., one regarding her 111th birthday in 1926, and the other about her death in 1927. [42207] $175

3. [Cemetery] 1850s Philadelphia Woodlands Cemetery Admission Ticket. A ticket to "Admit One Person" to Philadelphia's famed and historic Woodlands Cemetery, with a set of rules designed to halt all mischief making, even of the genteel Victorian sort- "Persons having refreshments will not be admitted. Baskets and like articles must be left in charge of the gate keeper. Smoking Will Not Be Allowed. Dogs are not permitted to enter the enclosure. Any person disturbing the quiet and good order of the place, by noise of other improper conduct, will be compelled to leave the grounds".

The Historical Society of Pennsylvania, which holds the Cemetery's historic papers, notes- "The Woodlands Cemetery was founded in 1840 on the grounds of the Woodlands estate, formerly belonging to famed Philadelphia lawyer Andrew Hamilton (c. 1676 - 1741) and heavily renovated by his grandson, William Hamilton (1745-1813). The mansion became the offices of Woodlands staff and a functioning chapel, while the ice house served as a receiving vault. Due to the effects of the Panic of 1837 and the loans secured by Woodlands owners in order to purchase the property, the cemetery was slow to start. It was not until 1845, when the body of Commodore David Porter (1780-1843) was transferred to Woodlands to attract business, that the cemetery saw its first burial. Once the cemetery began to operate, it became not only a popular burial ground, but also a site for picnics, strolling, and other public recreation, as was common in Victorian rural cemeteries. During the nineteenth and into the twentieth centuries, the cemetery carried out the burials of many prominent Philadelphia writers, politicians, professionals, doctors, bankers, and military leaders."

Day in and day out, these men rehearsed enemy plays for the benefit of "A" squad. How well they did their job is attested by the undefeated varsity record. "B" squad was no mean team in its own right. Playing a schedule of three games, it went undefeated and ranked among the top eighty teams in the nation. 17. [Hats] Genin, J.N. An Illustrated History of the Hat, from the Earliest Ages to the Present Time. Published in New York by the author in 1848. An amusing, well-illustrated story of the development of the hat, by one of America's most famous 19th century hatters. Wikipedia notes- "John Nicholas Genin was born in 1819. A hatter by profession, Genin reached national prominence in the 1850s. Like P.T. Barnum, his neighbor on Broadway, Genin had a remarkable knack for using publicity to boost his business. In 1850, at Barnum's urging, Genin made the winning auction bid of $225 for the first seat sold for the sensational cross-country tour by the singer Jenny Lind, the Swedish Nightingale, and reaped the tremendous publicity that followed. Every important newspaper in the country reported Genin's bid. Barnum wrote in his "Struggles and Triumphs" (1865) that "John N. Genin, the hatter, laid the foundation of his fortune" with that purchase. Throughout the country, men and women took off their hats to check whether they were wearing "a Genin". When the Hungarian patriot Louis Kossuth came to New York City in 1851, Genin again seized the moment. He met Kossuth's ship off Sandy Hook, and gave him and his followers hats from his "dead stock", with black feathers added, for them to wear as they paraded up Broadway. Genin, as soon as the parade was over, briskly sold the rest of his "dead stock". In 1852, when Amelia Bloomer needed a hat to go with the Bloomer-pants outfit she had designed, she turned to Genin, who produced the first round hat for fashionable young women, giving them an alternative to the bonnet. When public officials, in 1854, ignored public demands for cleaner streets, Genin took the bull by the horns, and hired, at his own expense, one hundred men and carts to do the work. For this act he was offered the nomination for mayor, but declined the honor, preferring to remain in the hat business."

Genin had one more claim to non-hatting fame: ever since the 1850s he had dreamed of a pedestrian footbridge to help ease congestion across the busy stretch of Broadway where his shop was located. In 1866 the fancy iron bridge, built to his own specifications, became a reality, and was named the Loew Bridge, after a city politician. Enter fellow-hatter and business competitor Charles Knox, whose own shop was thrown into darkness by Genin's new bridge. Knox and some fellow hatters from his side of Broadway successfully sued the city, and in 1867 the footbridge was demolished.

WITH- a printed letter from Genin explaining that since there were no books on the history of hats he felt it would be a good idea to produce one, and here it is, please accept it as a token of his esteem. A very uncommon book in any condition, and probably unique when found paired with the printed promotional letter, both in excellent, unworn condition. Softcover. 4.5"x6.5", 54 pages with line illustrations, plus 2 lithographed plates of medals awarded to Genin. Minor soil, but overall clean and nice. Letter: sheet folded to 5"x8", clean and nice. 20. [Imposters] The Story of Caspar Hauser, the Nuremburg Foundling. Printed in Worcester by the Press of F.P. Rice, in 1877. An American issue of a text that was originally published in the Penny Magazine in 1834, just a year after Hauser's mysterious death. "It presents, in the relation of details, a very full and complete account of this wonderful person; and will prove interesting to those who are not familiar with his sad and romantic story. For the gratification of a few friends, a small edition has been reprinted, to be privately distributed." Kaspar Hauser (1812-1833) was, or was not, a long-lost prince of Baden, the son of a German cavalryman mysteriously raised in confinement by a masked man and then dumped on the streets of Nuremburg at age 16, or a fraudster, trickster and con-artist who accidentally took his own life while attempting to revive flagging interest in his stories. His claims have been investigated and dismissed by historians and medical experts, and we are left with "fraudster", but they nonetheless made for exciting speculation and reading throughout the 19th century. 23. [Politics] Ephemera Related to the 1918 New Hampshire Constitutional Convention. The 1918 New Hampshire Constitutional Convention actually convened in 1921, and voted to send to state voters proposals to allow women to vote, and to decrease the size of the New Hampshire House of Representatives.
