A Report on Bridge course organized at BVM Engineering College for the
Academic year 2017-18.
About Institute:
Birla Vishvakarma Mahavidyalaya (BVM) is managed by Charutar Vidya Mandal,
(CVM) a registered charitable trust established in 1945. Since its inception the trust
has been striving for the upliftment of rural society through education. BVM is a
premier institute of CVM founded in 1948. BVM is the First Approved Degree

Concept by Dr. C. L. Patel, Chairman, CVM
Today, after more than half a century in the life of the township, we are at
the threshold of another era. In this age of the Global Village, when global
interdependence and competition are upon us, we must educate and train
our technocrats to keep up and keep pace with the best and the brightest in
the world. We must offer programmes of study appropriate to the modern
age, maintain high standards of education and we must offer the
opportunity of learning to young technocrats from Gujarat, India and the
world. Bridge course is such a true initiative which lead towards
development of the student.
Concept by Dr. Indrajit Patel, Principal
Bridge course is one of the initiative adopted to give students the confidence
and skills to successfully transition from school to college. It also Assist
students in their personal development of life skills including test-taking
strategies. We have developed this course in such a way that concept of

About Bridge Course:
The Bridge Course is aimed to act as a buffer for the new entrants, with an objective
to provide adequate time for the transition to hard-core engineering courses. During
this interaction of bridge course week with the faculty and their classmates, the
students will be equipped with the knowledge and the confidence needed to take on
bigger challenges as future engineers of this country.
Objectives:
To act as a buffer for the new entrants.
To provide adequate time for the transition to hard-core engineering courses.
Focus on fostering a strong sense of ethical judgment and moral fortitude.
Applications based self-learning and intermingling of a large cross section of
students from vastly varying backgrounds.
A breather, to prepare themselves before courses for first year engineering
commence.
The students will be equipped with the knowledge and the confidence needed
to take on bigger challenges.
Nurture a deeper understanding of the local and global world and our place in
at as concerned citizens of the world.
Interactive and Active Learning by Doing have been weaved into the Bridge
Course.
Active learning with the help of other students.
Aiming at making the engineering smoother for the entrants, BVM had organized one
week bridge-course for the newly entered students of academic year 2017-18. Main
objective of the program is to provide ample time and platform for the transition of
students from school to the hard-core engineering. In spite of having very good
grades at Higher Secondary Exam, students need to have exposure of engineering
culture. Hence bridge course proves to be the best opportunity for the students to
adapt themselves to new social and academic environment.
During this interaction with the experts, faculties and their classmates, the students
were equipped with the knowledge and confidence needed to take on bigger

challenges as future engineers of this country during the course. The Bridge course
program successfully organized and completed under the guidance of Principal, Dr.
Indrajit Patel and course Coordinator- Dr. Trupti Desai.
The bridge course initiated with registration followed by orientation program on 28th
July 2017. Keeping in mind a personalized and direct communication, it was thought
that the orientation of the students is to be conducted by the respective department.
The enthusiasm of the students was found exemplary for reporting and registration
procedure at the college. Orientation program was aimed to enhance students’
familiarity with the faculties, BVM Campus (Infrastructure) and showcasing the
various students’ activities. For the current bridge course, the committee members
planned to involve expert lectures for learning engineering and subject related
orientation to keep them equipped with various life skills and subject repertoire.
Keeping in mind the number of freshly enrolled students, the bridge course
committee split the whole group into two groups i.e. Group one of Non-circuit branch
involving students of Civil, Mechanical and Production (Division 1, 2, 6, 7, 8)
Engineering and Group two of circuit branch involving students of Computer,
Electrical, Electronics, Electronics and Communication and Information Technology
(Division 3, 4, 5, 9, 10) engineering.
We have invited experts from different institutions to interact with the new entrants
and brief the learners with their expertise in various fields for learning engineering.
Along with expert talks, the students were exposed to subject orientations, village
visits and industrial visits for furnishing their social as well as technical side of
learning.
Interaction with experts and faculties aimed to build students with various life skills
like Self-esteem, Self-confidence, Time and Stress management; subject orientation of
the Mathematics, Physics, and English were the highlights of this Bridge course. The
students were also provided with the exposure to the village and industrial visits
which in turn enabled them to explore their vistas and horizons of hard core
engineering industries and social responsibility.

Glimpse of Bridge course:
Learning Engineering: The committee unanimously decided to have experts from two different section of the
society which included professionals from Industry and Personal development. It was
witnessed that experts discussed major themes useful for students’ life. They devised
their expertise in their field of soft skills. The experts just not only delivered lectures
but it was an interactive session where learners were able to co-relate themselves
with the ideas presented and have a clear picture of self as well as of the vitally
important soft skills for the rest of their lives.
The sessions were so interesting that the learners enthusiastically participated in the
tasks assigned and displayed their enthusiasm and motivation to be a part of
creating healthy society. As a part of expert talk by Shri Vinay Pandya, he suggested
a number of strategies to boost the self-confidence and self-esteem. His inputs were
quite subtle to the learners in terms of its real life application i.e. how the strategies
can be implemented in social life. Moreover he suggested that self-confidence is the
reason for self-esteem which can only be brought by sending positive vibrations to

the mind. The discussion also explored some statistical data depicting the reception
of negative thoughts received by a teenager. It was found that the students felt
motivated towards the end of session and with the things shared by the expert.
Another expert talk was delivered by Mr. Jagdish Salsa, a soft skills expert from
Microsoft, on the theme of general Soft skills and stress management. The interaction
was quite comprehensive in sense that it covered all the major aspects related to the
students’ life. He depicted that in their four year of engineering there will be
multitude of tasks that they need to fulfill except acquiring the knowledge of
engineering subjects. The session significantly emphasized work ethics and time
management, and stress management. The learners felt motivated to get encultured
in the color of engineering college and more significantly the importance of soft skills
in professional and individual life.
The bridge course also involved subject inputs by the faculties of the institute
thinking that the inputs by the faculties and students representatives will prepare
the new entrants with sufficient information regarding the work culture and
professional ethics which probably will be helpful to them for the four years of
engineering and act accordingly in the institute.
It is evident the faculties were engaged in revising and instructing the new entrants with the three major subject of science and humanities i.e. Mathematics, English and
Physics. It was made clear that the learners will be exposed to a diagnostic test to ensure their prior knowledge in the subjects of Mathematics, English, Physics.

Village & Industry Visit: Village and Industrial visits have been arranged for the students for providing them social as well as technical side of learning. Village and Industrial visits were to enhance learners’ understanding and experience of society and industry in real way.
The village visit was organized for the student in different regions of the Anand
District which involved various villages including Valsan, Jol, Mogar, Sarsa, Adas, Vaghasi, Navali, Sandeshar, Napadvanta and Vadod. Aim of the village visit is to create a helping attitude, Interact with people and observe their way of living,
Compare with own lifestyle, Make a list – what they have, do not have and what they can better have. Students has also prepare report including the problem which they
wish to solve for the betterment of the village. Students were taken for the one day industrial exposure to the different companies
Elecon, Atlanta, Amul, Finecast and Rhino Industries. The Faculties of institute including Prof. F.R. Vora, and Prof. J. N. Jain coordinated the event actively. The response of the students was found exemplary in understanding their future role in
industrial environment and social responsibility in a community.
