s a step in the direction of enhancing co-operation between academia and corporates memorandum of A

understanding was signed between the Indian Merchants Chamber and University of Mumbai to launch a Rs. 2 crore Pravinchandra Gandhi Chair dedicated to Banking and finance on 15th June 2010.

The Chief Minister, Hon. Shri. Prithviraj Chavan, inaugurated the Chair at the University in the august presence of dignitaries such as Hon. Shri. Rajesh Tope, Minister for Higher & Technical Education, Maharashtra , Dr. R ajan Weluk ar, Vice Chancellor of University of MumbaiShri. Dilip Dandekar, President of Indian Merchants Chamber, Shri Gandhi, Shri Niranjan Hiranandani and Dr. Rajpal Hande, Director BCUD.

IMC took up the initiative to set up the chair, following a suggestion made by Chief Minister recently, which was wholeheartedly welcomed by the Vice

Chancellor. This Chair would be established at the Jamnalal Bajaj Institute of Management Studies, affiliated to University of Mumbai. With this, Mumbai

University will have 19 Chairs dedicated t o d i f f e r e n t faculties. The Chief Minister said that l a t e S h r i . P r a v i n c h a n d r a Gandhi was a guide and mentor of the IMC for many decades and was also a leading b a n k e r . I n recognition of his w i d e - r a n g i n g services to the s o c i e t y , t h e Government of India had conferred on him the 'Padma Bhushan' award. Establishing the chair was possible with the help of an endowment of Rs. 2 crore donated by the Indian Merchants Chamber (IMC) and a matching contribution by Maharashtra Government.

Shri. Prithviraj Chavan announced that the State Government would soon institute a special fund in the Ministry of Higher Education for supporting private sector

initiatives in the area of higher education. He further added that there were many donors for promoting science and technology, but few came forward to promote humanities and Social Sciences. Hence this Chair encouraging research into banking and finance is noteworthy, he pointed out and urged upon other corporate houses to emulate this example.

Shri. Rajesh Tope in his address stated that the benefits of banking and other financial services were yet to reach 40 per cent of India's population in the remote rural areas. Hence he urged the University of Mumbai to focus on undertaking studies for expanding the banking services to the neglected sections of society.

The primary objective of this chair is to encourage applied and empirical research of high standard and will cater to research needs of the banking and finance sector with a view to gain an insight and broad perspective in these areas. It will also help in training and developing highly qualified individuals in the field of banking and finance. Vice Chancellor Dr Welukar said., “My expectation from this chair is that whatever research or study is conducted, should be disseminated to the society for actual use.”

The play was enacted using voice modulations and emotions with a summary about its essential literary criticisms. As a result , the learners now had no need for a reader and could be self reliant learners.

2. The second venture was developing the instructional material in tactile form…..

The target group for this venture were the VCL from Standard XI of the Commerce faculty. While learning Economics , they came across certain diagrams which they were told to eliminate from their course of study. These VCL felt they were not in any way lesser than sighted learners and they could master the diagrams if they were delivered in an appropriate manner for their study.

Our B Ed students , took this up as a challenge. Tactile papers were used to trace the diagrams and text was translated into Braille. They then compiled all of this in to a book that the learner could use for study after being oriented about hoe to best use the book.. The VCLs were much more empowered now.

T h e t e a c h i n g f a c u l t y u n d e r t h e expertise of Dr Kalpana Kharade culled out a 1 day workshop on “developing s t u d y s k i l l s a m o n g t h e v i s u a l l y challenged students". Sur veying the learning difficulties & self efficacy of the target group , Concept of Study Skil ls - Information Gathering Skil ls ( R e f e r e n c i n g & T e x t b o o k S t u d y Strategies), Information Storage Skills -Note Taking, Note Making, Organising Study Material, Retrieval Skills, Time Management, Stress Management & Self Motivation for the study, Memory Techniques , preparing for the test formed part of the workshop .

The response received from the VCLs was overwhelming. The teaching faculty felt a sense of satisfaction at being able to do their bit for these special children.

PROJECT BICYCLE

The University Celeberates Independence Day At Its Tribal Jurisdiction College In Javhar

University of Mumbai Q u a r t e r l y

A very novel idea of using the cycles for the tribal students was undertaken by the university of Mumbai on 15th August 2011. Four lady students of Ramnarain Ruia college namely Asira Chirmuley, Eesha C h i r m u l e y, M u k t a D e s h p a n d e a n d Yashshree Ketkar had collected fifty two bicycles to give them to the students of Gokhale Education society's Arts and Commerce College, Javhar College, District Thane. These second Year BA girls had met the Hon. Vice Chancellor and had discussed the idea, which was carried out by them in the record time only two months ago.

Modus Operendi

The students had a very simple philosophy, those cycles that are not in use and are lying idle in our buildings were collected and repaired. For the repair they collected money from the friends and have collected Rs. 50,000/-. Tyre tube of all the bicycles were changed, identical locks, bells were given to all the cycles.

Approximately Rs. 35000 was spent on repairing and still about 15000 is surplus which will be used for the next round of students in some of the tribal college.

Distribution

The cycles were distributed to the students on two considerations

a) those who come from far off places and walk for almost 5-7 kilometers and

b) those who have performed well in their academics.

The Principal and the staff Ms. Kulkarni Pradnya had helped the students logisti-cally. There were some who came forward and donated new cycles to only the girl students. The project continues and aims to reach to those friends in the tribal areas who may lose an opportunity to take education. They believe that this little effort makes a difference to their life and therefor have named their group as MAD "Making a Difference”
