BOARD OF DIRECTORS ELECTION RESULTS;President: Clara DixonBoard: (7 Elected)Charles Barker Chris MikesellJohanna Bielecki Pat ReedPat Eberline Dr. George ViscomiKen Karustis

Congratulations to all, welcome a'board!

A Letter from John B. Tabb:On George Booth. Ex-officio -to-be.

I owe George a compliment. When, for variousreasons I had to resign as President, George volun-teered to serve out the remainder of my term. Heshould be complimented on the fine and sometimesthankless job that he has done. I am thankful that Ihad such a worthy, dedicated successor. I hope themembership appreciates his efforts as much as I do.On the Great Slate (of candidates):

I remember how easy it used to be to vote for aBoard of Directors when there were only a fewvolunteers willing to stand for election. The choiceswere predetermined and quite easy.

Now its tough. With many good candidates howdoes one_make a choice? I would almost like to votefor the entire list.

I feel that anyone elected from the '98 slate will bemore than able and willing to continue and build thegreat traditions of the Club into the 21st century.

A letter from Johanna Bielecki:At the Scarab Club Board of Directors election on

May 16th only 71 out of 250 members bothered totake the time to vote. Of those 71, two are the dearlymissed Kirshman's of which Carroll is recoveringfrom a severe stroke. Another one is a long time lifemember, Bernice Carmichael in Florida—a staunchScarab Club supporter, who is blind. She had her(power of) attorney sign for her. There were a numberof new members at the party, not yet on the roster, andthey voted.

The Board runs the Club. All that happens isdetermined and approved/considered at the lengthychallenging meetings. It takes some time andcommitment to volunteer to work on Club activitiesand committees—we can certainly use volunteers. Ittakes very little time to study the slate of candidates, make your choices, and put a 32 cent stamp on theenvelope provided. Someone thought enough aboutthe Club to have their attorney sign for her.

Where was your vote?* * *

Also, we need a volunteer to go through the many newmember applications and determine who checked theactivities in which their interest lies. Or new mem-bers can call the Club to find out how they canbecome involved.

Page 3AUCTIONThe Auction was a big SUCCESS in more ways than one.Our net income was about $8600. Isn't that fantastic? Themembers that I assigned tasks to do came through on the dayof the Auction. The Committee members who met reg-ularilly since last September made this Auction the successthat it was. Special thanks go to: Jeanne Poulet who cameto my house one day and together we wrote up the forms thateach member received; Pat Reed who designed the ad form, obtained the printer, put the excellent catalog together, andwith the help of Greg Stephens who collected the ads, bios, donor forms, and money; and to George Booth who con-tributed not only his expertise but photographed the art itemsfor the catalog; Donna Cyrbok who worked on the invit-ations; Bill Murcko who beautifully designed & printedthem. Ralph Hartshorn who attended the meetings, offeredvaluable suggestions, worked on mailings & Auction day; tomy Co-chair Clara Dixon who took complete charge of theSilent Auction enlisting Rachael Harla & Nancy Pitel; & toIrene Will who cooked up a storm, raiding the 'fridge forfood to serve. Many more thanks to all. —Pat EberlineSOCIAL

MRS. CURTIS CARMICHAEL: A MOTHER AND FINEARTIST

Mrs. Carmichael gives a lot of credit for the peacefulcoexistence of her career and her family to her mother whomshe lost quite recently-"She had nine children of her own andlived with me for 13 years," Bern ice said.

We climbed three flights of stairs to the Carmkhael work-ing studio at the Scarab Club to get our first glimpse of theartist. She wasn't working-although there was plenty ofevidence around that she had not been twiddling her fingersthese last 25 years. "Sculpture is an extremely expensive mediafor a mother with a growing family, however," the artistcommented. Lately, she has done some still-lifes in variousways: "To show that a vase of flowers doesn't have to be vapidand stilted but can be strong."

Next year she will go to Provincetown to study with VictorCandelt and Leo Mans.

Submitted by Henry KevesPS: Is this the same Bernice Carmichael mentioned on page 2in Johanna Bielecki's article?

THE SCARAB CLUB BUILDING FUNDBuilt in 1928, the clubhouse of the Scarab Club of Detroit is listed in the National Register of Historic Places. It is

considered the best existing example of the Arts and Crafts style of architecture.Time has taken its toll on our majestic building, particularly the roof. While repairs have been made, we will need a

completely new roof in the near future. The persons and organizations listed below have contributed generously to this project. To these culturally minded

citizens and representatives of these civic minded corporations, we owe a debt of gratitude. A golden lapel pin will bepresented for all donations of $100.00 or more.

The list will be updated and published in "The Buzz," until we reach our goal, when a certificate will be presentedto the board. May we add your name?
