Francis, of Defiance, Ohio, won his 20th National Horseshoe Pitchers Associa- tion World Tournament Championship on Saturday, defeating Brian Simmons 42-20 in the tourna- ment’s finale at the Kansas Expocentre. Francis won his first championship in 1989, when he was just 19. And now, at 45, he has won 20 of the sport’s last 26 titles. There’s no more room in his house to display the trophies, he says. He stows the majority of them in his attic, but they remain in decent condi- tion. Does the constant feeling of winning ever wear off? “Never.” “It’s a very hard sport,” Francis said. “It takes a lot of hard work, effort, time and dedication.” This past weekend is the pinnacle for Francis, the motivation behind the hours he spends with a pair of horseshoes in hand and pieces of metal sticking out of the ground. “This is what it’s all about,” Francis said. “Right here.” Francis took after his dad by getting involved in competitive horseshoes. Growing up on a farm about 100 miles north of Kansas City in Blythedale, Mo., it was his form of recreation. His aunts, uncles and cousins, who he went with to Royals games as a kid, drove to Topeka on Saturday morning to cheer him on. “It was cool having them here,” he said. Wearing a red Nike T-shirt and white cargo shorts, Francis is a combination of Tiger Woods in his prime on Sundays and an average dad. The fact that Francis is at the top of his sport is non-debatable. If Francis is pitching well heading into a tournament, his expectation is simple and virtually guaranteed — a win. “If I pitch as good as I’m gonna pitch,” he said, “chances are, I’m gonna win.” Francis has a repetitive routine inherent in every toss. His left arm rests at his side, and his right arm swings back and forth three times, hinged at the elbow. He then steps forward with his left foot and lets it fly. More often than not, the horseshoe rotates 180 degrees during its flight path and collides perfectly with the stake, connecting for a ringer. To put Francis’ success into perspec- tive, Bill Russell and Michael Jordan won a combined 17 NBA titles, still three shy of Francis’ mark. “That’s the goal. To be on top,” Francis said. “Any sport, no matter what it is, you’re goal is to win and be on top. To be the best.” But the top comes with its challenges. In the last 19 years, Francis has lost the world championships just three times, in each instance to Simmons. “When you are (the best), you put a target on your back,” Francis said. “People are gunning for you.” Still, Francis has won 12 of the last 13 championships, and Saturday’s performance secured his fourth consecutive title. For those who criticize horseshoes’ validity as a sport, Francis has a clear message: “I would tell them to try it (and) see how hard it is, see how hard it is to be good at it,” he said.

ALAN FRANCIS IS ALMOST A SHOO-IN WHEN IT COMES TO HORSESHOES

By Chris Bumbaca - The Kansas City Star

All sports have their dominant figures. Basketball has LeBron James. Baseball has Mike Trout. Horse-shoes has Alan Francis. Francis, of Defiance, Ohio, won his 20th National Horseshoe Pitchers Associa-tion World Tournament Championship on Saturday, defeating Brian Simmons 42-20 in the tourna-ment’s finale at the Kansas Expocentre. Francis won his first championship in 1989, when he was just 19. And now, at 45, he has won 20 of the sport’s last 26 titles. There’s no more room in his house to display the trophies, he says. He stows the majority of them in his attic, but they remain in decent condi-tion. His left arm rests at his side, and his right arm swings back and forth three times, hinged at the elbow. He then steps forward with his left foot and lets it fly. with the stake, connecting for a ringer. To put Francis’ success into perspec-tive, Bill Russell and Michael Jordan won a combined 17 NBA titles, still three shy of Francis’ mark. “That’s the goal. The 2015 summer pitching schedule is coming to an end. Despite the contin-ued decline in membership, there were some very good tournaments in Ohio this year. I would like to thank all of our tournament and league directors for their hard work this year. We are blessed in Ohio to have people who devote their time and energy to allow the rest of us to have the opportunity to pitch. As I mentioned during the Convention at the State Tournament, I am proud of our current slate of officers. All of them are people who give unselfishly of their time to make our sport better. You would be amazed to know how many hours our officers have worked this year. Hats off to Amy Miller, Brian Fisher, Randy Shoemaker, Cindy Rose, Darryl Miller and Dan Sanders. I hope their efforts are ap-preciated. The Reno Family will once again be performing at the Bob Evans Farm Festival in Rio Grande on October 9th, 10th, and 11th. This is the 44th consecutive year the Reno Family has performed there. If you have never attended, you have missed some very good food and entertainment. Our show could not go forward without our leader, Ottie Reno. As you may be aware, Ottie became ill at the 2015 World Horseshoe Tournament in Topeka, Kansas. After two trips to the hospital, it was discovered that he would need gall bladder surgery. The surgery turned out to be more serious than expected, but I am happy to report that Ottie is recovering and feeling better every day. He plans to be at the Festival as scheduled. Congratulations to Alan Francis for winning his 20th World Championship this year. We are privileged to watch the greatest horseshoe pitcher of all times. In addition, he is an outstanding representative for our sport. It is sad that he does not earn any significant prize money for his efforts. Matt Guy, a former horseshoe pitcher earned $10,000 this year as the “King of Cornhole”. Just this weekend, he and his son earned an additional $10,000 at another cornhole tournament. Even Matt will tell you that Alan’s accomplishments and skill are much more difficult than the skills required for cornhole. I would also like to congratulate Ruth Rife on winning the Senior Women’s World Championship once again. For good measure, she also won the 2015 Ohio State Women’s Championship again. I recently played against her in Kenton, and she complained that she was not pitching well. However, she pitched over 70% against me as usual and then threw 80% her last game. I keep hoping she will let me win a game. The big challenge for 2016 on the state and national level will be to stop the continuous decline in membership. It will be necessary to be innovative and creative to stop the downward trend. I wish everyone a healthy and happy 2016.

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE Gary Roberts

I have received the 2016 cards from the NHPA and have begun pro-cessing applications as of October 15th. I will be sending, by regular mail and electronically, during the first week of December, 2015, a Member-ship Application and a 2016 Tournament Schedule. Both items will also

be posted on the OHPA website (ohiohorseshoes.org). A special thanks to the tournament and league directors for all their continued hard work, time and efforts in making these events available to our members. If anyone is interested, I would be willing to bring my computer and the 2016 cards to an event for the convenience of purchasing cards. If you are interested, please contact me to schedule a mu-tually convenient time to get this accomplished. This 2015 Fall Newsletter will be the last issue printed and mailed to all members. Beginning January 2016, all News-letters will be sent electronically to email address provided. Newsletters will be posted on the website for anyone to view at any time. If you would like to receive a printed copy of the Newsletter by mail, please fill out the form located on Page 14 and mail it to me. If you would like the NHPA’s Newsline sent to you by regular mail, you can indicate this on the same Notice. Thanks to all the OHPA Officers for all their time and dedication in doing whatever it takes to support horseshoes. Thanks to all those that have helped promote horseshoes in the past and future. We all need to do what we can to get others involved and interested in horseshoes. My hopes for 2016 is a greater amount of members rather than de-clining amount. Anything for horseshoes. Wisher you a joyous holiday season with peace and cheer in the New Year! Happy pitching!

Proposed Rules Changes – WT Convention Delegate Voting Results by Dan Sanders

Hello All . . . First of all, I would like to thank and congratulate all of you who were in any way involved with the great success of the recent Topeka World Horseshoe Tournament! This was among the very best that I have attended and been involved with during my past 29 World Tournaments! And, of course, we're all looking forward to this next 2016 World Tournament in Montgomery, Alabama. The voting results for the twelve PRC's that were brought before our Convention Delegates this year are presented be-low. As there were 113 possible delegate votes, and a 2/3rds vote is required for passage, a total of 76 'yes' votes was required for the approval of each proposed change. For a more complete and detailed wording of the PRC's that were brought to the Convention floor, you can find them on the NHPA Website. From the front page, click on 'Rules/Bylaws', then click on 'Proposed Changes'. The PRC's that were passed will be included in the next revision of the RGS Book; to be published after January 1, 2016. Please see the voting results below. 2015 NHPA Rules Change Proposals – Condensed PRC #1 This proposal requires all new court construction to have a 5’ high protective barrier, and includes any rebuilt

fences after Jan 1st, 2016. FAILED 63/50 PRC #2 Describes additional requirements for a conditional court sanction. It will require that a minimum of 3 courts

have short distance platforms. This proposal would take effect in 2019. PASSED 102/11 PRC #3 This proposal clarifies where a contestant should stand during the game while not pitching. PASSED 106/7 PRC #4 Defines what the term “modified shoe” includes. Does not allow anything but paint to be applied to the shoe. 105/6 PRC #6 Lowers the age of the Elders Division from 70 to 65 years of age. FAILED 34/79 PRC #7 Lowers the age of the Cadets Division from 12 to 10 years of age. FAILED 16/97 PRC #8 Removes the alternate pitch format requirement from handicapped classes. PASSED 93/20 PRC #9 Allows a player in a pacer game to choose the format of who pitches first. The player can choose to use the

same format as the tournament is being played. FAILED 68/45 PRC #10 Decides how class playoff game ties are to be broken, using the extra inning method. PASSED 110/3 PRC #11 Allows state tournament directors to mix any championship class if there is a lack of entries into a division. FAILED 46/67 PRC #12 Abolishes the Senior Men’s Division. The Elder’s age vote results will be known before this vote is taken. FAILED 27/86 There were also 3 decisions made by the NHPA Council that required delegate approval: 1. Allows Juniors to receive their award money upon reaching age 18. PASSED 104-9 2. Requires all US and Canadian world tournament entries to have 4 sanctioned events. PASSED 112- 1 3. Allows all minor changes (too numerous to be listed) needed in reference to converting Newsline to an online publica-tion. PASSED 110-3 World Tournament Judging Clinics were once again very popular and well-attended in Topeka, with over 40 partic-ipants from 8 different Charters. Many thanks to Rich Altis (MO) who helped with these presentations and also provided valuable assistance to our Judges who were 'on duty' during this tournament. Our ultimate goal is to provide you with World Tournament Judges who are all 'NHPA Certified'! And to help in reaching this goal, clinic participants from sev-eral Charters expressed an interest in making these Clinics available to members of their Charters. Please ask your Char-ter Officers about the possibility of attending one of these clinics, and if anyone else has an interest in learning more about this valuable learning experience, please contact me by e-mail, so that I can forward the information and materials to you. All members should become familiar with this important Playing Rules information; whether or not you ever in-tend to become a judge! Best of luck, and good pitching to each of you!

Club pitches Burkitt as namesake for horseshoe courts ThisWeek - Hilliard Northwest News By: Kevin Corvo

Nearly four decades ago, a group of horseshoe-pitching enthusiasts formed the Hilliard Horseshoe Club.

The club's last surviving charter member is 84-year-old Paul Burkitt, who will lend his name to the horseshoe courts at Roger A. Reynolds Municipal Park, where the iron clanks on league nights from May to September.

The club's current officers, at the behest of club member and past president Mike Ruehrmund, officially named them the Paul Burkitt Courts last week.

Club members said they staged a surprise announcement at their annual banquet Sept. 16 at the Der Dutchman Restaurant in Plain City.

"I noticed there was a large reserved table and it was still empty when the banquet was about to start," Burkitt said. "I asked, 'Who are all those seats for?' Then (all five) of my children walked in (and many) of my grandchildren. That kind of clued me in that something was going to happen.

"It was all a complete surprise."

Ruehrmund presented Burkitt a lifetime achievement award, but Steve Mazer, director of the Hilli-ard Recreation and Parks Department, announced the bigger surprise: naming the courts in Bur-kitt's honor.

"I wanted to honor Paul while he was still playing and went to our club officers with the idea. They all supported it ... so we then went to (Mazer) and it all came together," Ruehrmund said.

Burkitt said more than 30 avid pitchers established the Hilliard Iron Tossers in 1978 and success-fully lobbied then recreation and parks director Phyllis Ernst for a court at the municipal park.

According to Burkitt, one of the founding members was Wayne Brown, then the owner of the Hilli-ard Northwest News, who reported on the club in a column called Tossing Iron.

The club soon became known as the Hilliard Horseshoe Club, he said.

"I've traveled a lot and made a lot of great friends, too, but none like the ones I have in Hilliard," said Burkitt, who won a world cham-pionship in 2011 in an elders class for those 70 and older.

He twice finished third place in the world championship in the elder class and was state champion in 2005 and 2009.

He was inducted into the Ohio State Horseshoe Pitchers Hall of Fame in 2006.

Mazer said Burkitt would be presented with a resolution from Hilliard City Council recogniz-ing the naming of the courts -- perhaps as soon as Sept. 28 -- and then the sign would be installed at the courts. Page 9

Ohio sent 53 pitchers to Topeka this year, and for those that went, I am sure you were not disappointed. The host hotel was attached to the pitching arena and spoiled us all. We enjoyed $84 per night with a wonderful breakfast that was included. Special mention to those that won and participated in World Championships: Dan Sanders 1st place in EF2 Bob Jewett 1st place in EI1 Dick Lucas 1st place in SME Alan Francis 1st place in MA1 Amy Francis 1st place in WC Championship Play Pitchers: Gary Roberts(Senior Men) Ruth Rife, Marlene Cooper(Senior Women) Amy Francis(Women) Virgil Rife, Roy Dugger(Elders) Alan Francis, Jim Walters(Men) Ruth Rife won her second Senior Women Title, and Alan Francis won his 20th world title taking the men’s crown. We are very proud of all Ohio pitchers that made the sacrifice to attend. I am already looking forward to next year, where it will be held in Montgomery, AL from July 25th to August 6th. The 2017 World Tournament will be in St. George, UT from July 13th to July 25th. I am already trying to find us a GREAT deal on lodging in Al-abama, so be watching for that information. Have a safe fall and winter and good luck pitching.
