Minitex/OCLC Billing ChangesCarla Dewey Urban, Minitex/BATS
In July 2009, the nature of the partnership between Minitex and OCLC changed as support for OCLC products and services moved from Minitex to OCLC Support Services. That partnership continues to evolve as OCLC moves to consolidate and centralize administrative services.
Toward that end, and effective July 1, 2012, billing for OCLC products and services will also move from Minitex to OCLC. Directors and Minitex Billing Contacts at each institution that receives OCLC billing should have received a letter via mail and e-mail with information on this transition.
As this change from billing through Minitex to direct OCLC billing for OCLC services occurs, the following information may be helpful to you:
• Your library or group will automatically begin to receive OCLC statements directly from OCLC in August 2012 for July 2012 activity.
• You may choose to be invoiced by OCLC on a monthly basis, or you may participate in a Subscription Deposit Program that earns interest on deposits (currently 4% APR through Dec. 31, 2012).
• If you need a contractual agreement to support your billing arrangement with OCLC, you may request such a contract from Becky Hurley, Director of Order Services at OCLC (1-800-848-5878, ext. 4316 or [email protected])
• You may choose to close your Minitex Deposit Account, or to retain funds in your Minitex Deposit account to pay for training, databases, barcodes or other charges your library incurs through Minitex.
Minitex and OCLC will provide much more information about this transition in the coming months. You can also find more information about the transition on the Frequently Asked Questions webpage:
http://www.oclc.org/content/go/en/transition/Midwest/questions.html
We are working closely with OCLC to ensure a smooth transition for each library. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact Carla Urban of Minitex at 1-800-462-5348 or [email protected] or Becky Hurley, of OCLC Support Services, at 1-800-848-5878, ext. 4316 or [email protected].
Thank you for your support as we make this change in billing, for your strong collaboration as a Minitex participant, and for your important contributions to the OCLC Cooperative.

Helen StubHelen Stub was the secretary-treasurer of the Twin City Library Club (TCLC) when the organization dissolved around 1959. Founded in 1906, the Twin City Library Club was an organization intended to help librarians in St. Paul and Minneapolis become acquainted with each other and the library collections of the Twin Cities. Helen reflects in the interview:
This group of people were active participants in the intellectual, aesthetic, educational, political life of that period between 1906-1959. And, that period included two World Wars, a depression, the recovery, the New Deal, droughts, and, of course, the invention of the automobile.
Helen Stub discusses the founding of the organization by Clara Baldwin (Director, Public Library Commission, 1889-1936), John King (Director, Minnesota State Library), Gratia Countryman (Director, Minneapolis Public Library), W.W. Folwell (President, University of Minnesota) and relays tales from the Secretary-Treasurer's books that chronicle the events of the library profession in the Twin Cities. These included summaries of lectures, reports on library successes, and descriptions of a 1908 list of periodicals of the libraries in Minneapolis and St. Paul, early interlibrary loan, site visits to libraries, announcement of the first bookmobile, parties at the H.W. Wilson company, boat trips on the Mississippi, road tours by car, and elegant dinners. Access the full recording here:

MINITEX/OCLC MAILING
Doubtless the most significant aspect of LC’s plan is their target date for RDA implementation: March 31, 2013. This date, as they put it, is “when all catalog records newly created at LC will be produced according to RDA instructions.”3 (Though a “target” date and not a firm deadline, it does give something for the rest of us to hang our hats on.) Their planning document goes into further detail on scheduling, recommended instruction topics, and logistical issues pertinent to LC staff and supervisors; at the same time, it could also serve as a blueprint for local library training.
Wiggins’ announcement is available at LC’s website:
http://www.loc.gov/catdir/cpso/news_rda_implementation_date_120227.html
LC’s current RDA training plan is also accessible online (PDF format):
http://www.loc.gov/aba/rda/pdf/RDA_Long-Range_Training_Plan.pdf
Also, a reminder: LC has a fairly new webpage that offers one-stop shopping for all of their RDA announcements and materials:

OCLC Discussion Paper About RDAOCLC; edited
As a part of preparations for the future implementation of RDA, OCLC staff have been discussing how RDA data and practices might be incorporated more fully into WorldCat.
A discussion paper, Incorporating RDA practices into WorldCat, which lays out potential policies and actions, is available for comment. Please send your comments on these proposed policies and actions, as well as your thoughts on any other possible policies in regard to bibliographic records and RDA, to [email protected] by April 15, 2012. The discussion paper can be viewed at:

Cathy De Rosa, OCLC Vice President for the Americas and Global Vice President of Marketing, also gave an overview of OCLC's latest membership survey on communications.
Rick Schwieterman, OCLC Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer and treasurer, closed the event with a brief summary of the recommendations, actions and outcomes from OCLC Global Council’s Cost Sharing Models Task Force.

LC Announces RDA Implementation PlansMark K. Ehlert, Minitex/BATS
The Library of Congress recently announced that they have devised a long-range training plan for their (now effectively certain) move to RDA.
First, a little background. The U.S. RDA Test Coordinating Committee issued last June a report in which they recommended that RDA adoption by the Library of Congress, the National Agricultural Library, and the National Library of Medicine take place “no sooner than January 2013”—and then only if nine conditions were either met or if significant movement is made on achieving them.1 According to Beacher Wiggins (Director, Acquisitions and Bibliographic Access Directorate), a recently published update reveals good progress is being made on such matters as “re-wording” parts of RDA into less elaborate prose and establishing a framework for a successor to the MARC standard. 2 And, so with fulfillment of the prerequisites looking favorable, LC personnel have devised a year-long, three-part training plan to bring their cataloging staff up to speed on RDA.

Using the Library of Congress Classification H ScheduleWednesday, May 2, 2012, 1:00 PM - 2:00 PM (Central)http://www.ala.org/alcts/confevents/upcoming/webinar/050212
This webinar, presented by Louise Ratliff, Social Sciences and Map Catalog Librarian, University of California, Los Angeles, will cover some of the more complex aspects of using the "H" schedule to create classification numbers, including use of various kinds of tables, special topics, and subdivisions for industries and trades. At the end of the presentation, attendees will be able to:
• Shelflist according to the Regions and Countries Table
• Use internal tables to subdivide by local geography, or firm name
• Apply external tables to subdivide by geography, form, time period, or subject
Who should attendThe presentation is geared toward catalogers with some experience using the "H" classification, and thus will not cover basic skills.
PrerequisitesUse of Classification Web is not required, since classification numbers will be constructed manually, based on the printed schedule and tables published by the Library of Congress. Examples will be shown using the Class Web "Standard Browser."
Resource Sharing
Changes to Address Fields in WCRSOCLC; edited
In early March, OCLC made changes to address fields in the ILL workform within WorldCat Resource Sharing (WCRS).
The “SHIP TO”, “BILL TO” and “RETURN TO” fields are now the following distinct address fields:
• Attention• Address 1• Address 2• City• State/Province• Country• Postal Code
The new “Address 1” field contains the data that was previously included in the “SHIP TO” field on the ILL workform.
What action should you take? To make sure your library’s address information displays appropriately in the revised workform, you need to modify your library’s constant data to split the address information into the appropriate new fields. Visit the following guide for instructions on how to revise your constant data:
http://www.oclc.org/support/documentation/resourcesharing/using/WCRS_constant_data.pdf
During the recent WorldCat Resource Sharing Best Practices webinar, “The Secret World of the FirstSearch Administrative Module”, guest speaker Tina Baich, Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) discussed the recent changes to WCRS address fields. The webinar recording is available at:

File Not Found: And Introduction to Digital PreservationWednesday, April 18, 2012http://www.minitex.umn.edu/Training/Details.aspx?SessionID=395
DescriptionHas your computer ever crashed, and you lost all those important files you had saved? What if the loss was spread to the contents of your entire organization? Or, have you ever gone back to a file that was a few years old and tried to open it, only to find that you no longer have the program to read the file? As most of the records we create are digital, digital preservation is essential to ensure continued access to these resources.
This session provides a basic introduction to the concept of and issues associated with digital preservation. Digital resources are defined, the life-cycle of digital objects is discussed, and challenges and risks associated with digital preservation are identified. Participants will be introduced
to the Library of Congress's Digital Preservation Outreach and Education (DPOE) Program.
AudienceThis introductory course is for staff of any library, archive, or other organization concerned about the long term care of their digital resources. No previous knowledge about the topic of digital preservation is assumed.
Presenter Carol Kussmann, Collection Assistant at the Minnesota Historical Society, has been working on a National Digital Information and Infrastructure Preservation Program grant for the past three years, with the goal to educate others on how to preserve and provide access to digital legislative content. In addition, Carol was one of the inaugural 24 trainers invited to attend the Library of Congress’s Digital Preservation Outreach and Education (DPOE) Train-the-Trainer Workshop in September 2011.
