World School A publication of the IB Parents Association of GWHS Febuary 2012 – Vol. 24, Issue 5 From the IBPA Board President The first IB Parent Meeting of the New Year was held on Tuesday, January 3, 2012 and featured a panel of GW IB graduates who shared their impressions and experiences as college students and addressed how the IB program helped to prepare them for college. The evening's program was informative, enjoyable, and insightful. There was ample time for questions and the responses were as varied and diverse as the students themselves. See pages 4-5 of this issue for more. Our next parent/student meeting will be March 13, in the Community Room. This is a return visit from my good friends and alumni parents, Dana and Pam Wakefield. Dana is a retired Denver juvenile court judge and Pam was a deputy district attorney in the juvenile court system in Arapahoe County. They are currently in private practice as Court Appointed Special Advocates. We have 300+ applications from potential freshmen and Mrs. Geimer and Ms. Lane have been interviewing applicants daily since early December. Our students are the best advertisement for the IB program. We hear that many applicants have chosen to come to the IB program because of their shadow experience. A BIG thank you goes out to the students who helped make the shadows so comfortable at GW. Cora Neslin continued our GW hospitality by following up every shadow date with a phone call to the family. Behind the scenes, IB parents are planning and coordinating 2nd semester events. Shelly Moorman is working closely with Rusty Haynes, the GWIB college counselor, by promoting his informative workshops and by helping introduce the college application process to our junior students. Paul Day-Lucore continues to edit and publish The Broadcaster. Linda Williams once again spearheaded our “Welcome Fest” on January 31. Chairperson Julia Fitzpatrick is soliciting parent volunteers to help with the annual IB Senior Brunch and Elaine Tintera will begin the task of coordinating proctors for IB exams. Now that the second semester of the school year is In full swing, it is time to begin thinking about Board Positions for next year. Committed and involved parents are what make the Association such a successful organization and a strong voice for the IB Program. Volunteer Proctors needed for IB Exams in May Seniors and some juniors will be taking IB examinations during May. IBO has stringent guidelines for the conduct of these exams, and meeting them is a logistical challenge that Mrs. Geimer manages to meet every year – but she needs our help to do it.

Parents, this is a golden opportunity to get an insider’s glimpse of the IB External Assessment experience. Please consider volunteering to proctor (“invigilate,” in IB-speak) one or more of the May exams.

For more info and to volunteer to proctor, contact Elaine Tintera at [email protected].

An informative, eye-opening, and important evening…

featuring a DISCUSSION WITH:

Dana and Pam Wakefield Tuesday, March 13, 2012

6:30 – 8 PM

IB students are bright, competent, clever, and intelligent, right? Hardworking, ambitious, dedicated high school students abound in GW’s IB program, and we know they love learning, enjoy feeling independent, and thrive in challenging situations. Yet, life isn’t always smooth sailing. Even our students will face dilemmas at times. You will go home from this discussion with many new ideas and levels of awareness regarding our children’s lives. With their combined experiences, Dana and Pam will provide us much to think about. Both parents and students are encouraged to attend.

9th grader Larissa Babiak was instrumental in spurring current legislative efforts to adopt the Western Tiger Salamander as Colorado’s state amphibian. She co-founded the organization Colorado for the Tiger Salamander and on December 17, she met with Colorado State Rep. Angela Williams to discuss the proposal. Rep. Williams subsequently introduced legislation that is currently moving through the law making process. Congratulations to Larissa for seeing this through, and for helping to teach important Civics lessons to her fellow students across Colorado.

“LIFE AFTER IB” Meeting a hit!

January GWIB graduate panel, from left: Joanna Foote, Skyler Gallun, Lawson Williams, Henry Biermann, Deanna Chavez. Not

pictured: Melissa Mares.

If you made it to the January 3 IB Parents Association meeting, you had the great fortune of witnessing an impressive group of GWIB grads on our annual student panel. Four of the students are enrolled in college — Stanford, NYU, Arizona State and Georgetown — and two are recent graduates of CSU and Stanford. From college applications to roommate issues, they shared with the crowd their “life after IB” experiences. For those of you who missed this fun and informative evening, here's a sampling of the many highlights: Choosing a University: A few of the students knew which college they wanted to attend as soon as they stepped foot on campus. The total number of college applications varied, with nine being the most. Factors that swayed their choices included finances, scholarships, location, programs and clubs. Not one regretted his or her final choice. Tip: if you're able, visit a campus before you apply or accept. Sit in on a class. Interview a few students. See if the school's a good fit for you. The Benefits of IB: Acceptance of credits varied depending on the school. At CSU, one student received 30 semester credits! Overall it seemed as if the East Coast schools accepted more hours than their West Coast counterparts. All students felt the IB program prepared them for college and were happy with their writing and thinking skills. Tip: If you’re not set on your major, don’t narrow down your high school classes. One student warned that if there’s a chance you’ll take the engineering path, it’s a good idea to invest some time in higher level math and sciences, which was something he found himself catching up on since he hadn’t considered this area of study while in high school.

Challenges: Believe it or not, free time was a challenge for several of the students. It took them a while to feel comfortable relaxing. Common challenges included meeting new people and problems with roommates. A few students found it challenging to not get too caught up in their GPAs. Tip: Try to meet as many new people as possible and enjoy the college experience. Do your best, stay focused on the big picture and be happy with your and others' successes. You don’t have to be best friends with your roommate. Just try to get along. Social Scene (AKA Drugs and Alcohol): All of the students agreed that how you want to socialize is a personal choice. Tip: Find friends who support you in your choices so you don’t have to deal with peer pressure. Find your own niche and flourish. A Word to Parents: If your student is far away, try to visit on Parents' Weekend. Be clear on financial issues. Don't helicopter. Encourage your child to seek help from a counselor if needed. And last but not least, care packages are appreciated! Tip: Give your students the space they need to figure out their own path. — Rebekah Spetnagel GWIB College Counseling Committee

Speech and Debate With two full months of activities since the last Broadcaster issue, our GW Speech and Debate team has been busy. Competitions over this time included: Lobo Howl tournament in Ft. Collins, Congress Nationals qualification, the Blazing Sun tournament at Overland, the Mullen-Golden event, our own Patriot Games tournament, and multiple other tournaments before the end of 2011, including a national-level tournament in Alta, Utah.

Here are the results:

Alta, Utah: Patriot debaters traveled to Alta, Utah in early December to compete in a national-level tournament and

returned home with high honors. Our Public Forum (PF) team of Emma Thompson and Miles Moore earned the Top Speaker Award, the PF team of Langston Williams and Eli Gordon earned the Second-Place Speaker Award, and Matt

Zavislan earned the Tenth-Place Speaker Award in Lincoln-Douglas (LD). In the debates themselves, four of our entrants finished in the late rounds:

Semi-Finalists: PF: Emma Thompson/Miles Moore LD: Matt Zavislan

Octa-Finalists: PF: Langston Williams/Eli Gordon Cross-Exam Policy Debate: Sarah Pierce/Lucy Shen

Overland’s Candlelight Invitational, December 3: While some of the varsity team members were in Utah, of those back home, 11 made the finals at Overland. Especially noteworthy was Dan Morgan-Russell’s second tournament in a row of “picket fences,” that is a score of “1” from every judge in every round!

Congress Nationals Qualifying, January 27-28: GWSD garnered two of the three House spots for our region. Eli Gordon and Langston Williams will head to Indianapolis in June for the National Tournament. Emma Thompson and Margaret Schaack earned first and third alternate berths. If any qualifier cannot attend, an alternate will go instead. More than any other SD event, Congress is a team effort, in which teammates support and vote for each other. It is also the only event in which the other participants vote on the top speakers. GWSD had 13 students participating in the House and of those, nine were chosen to attend the super session, a special honor for the most articulate and compelling speakers. By comparison, the other two largest schools at the tournament combined for eight representatives in the super session. The other super session participants were Dan Morgan-Russell, Jack Glaser, Miles Moore, Mory Keita, and Jacob Waters. The other Congress participants were Theresa Papich, Anna Krauss, EJ Jacobs, Evan Acuna, Suzanna Steele, and Ian Staples. Our team’s competitors in the other 10 SD events will compete in the other national qualifying tournament in April.

Lawson Williams meets President Barack Obama

On October 26, 2011, when President Obama gave a speech on Student Loan Reduction in Denver, Lawson A. Williams was selected as one of 20 students to meet the President. Mr. Williams graduated from the GW IB program and is currently a sophomore at the Arizona State University in the W.P. Carey College of Business and Barrett Honors College.

Congratulations to Lawson and to his parents, Larry A. and Linda Sue Williams.

GW and Hamilton Middle School Collaborate at an Informational

Evening of Wine Tasting

GW's Principal Loan Maas, Hamilton Middle School's Principal Reina Gutierrez and Hamilton CSC Member/GWIB Parent, David H. Wollins, Esq., had a brainstorm — a “wine tasting” forum for families considering George Washington's 9th grade and Hamilton's IPM 6th grade program. The concept: invite the parents of the families to a casual get together with both Principals, teachers from each school, and other members of both communities and encourage healthy dialogues about the wonderful opportunities present at both schools. The reality: Friday, January 13, 2012, the Inaugural “Wine Tasting” for Hamilton 6th Grade applicants and George 9th Grade applicants was hosted at 950 South Cherry Street’s Mezzanine Floor – the building in which David’s Law Office is located. Between 40 and 60 participants enjoyed stimulating conversation, tasty cheese and crackers, a meet-and-greet with the Principals and teachers-in-attendance all of whom enjoyed a flight of 4 wines: Angel’s Landing Pinot Noir 2010; Perseverance Old Vine Zinfandel 2010; Cameron Hughes Meritage 2009; and Sincero Tempranillo 2007. Both Loan and Reina remarked that they want to build on the success of this event and turn it into an annual tradition. We wish to thank Sheila Carey of Argonaut Wine and Liquors (303-831-7788) who made special pricing accommodations for the event.

THE IB COLLEGE COUNSELING CORNER

Congratulations SENIORS on making it through the whirlwind that is the first semester of senior year and completing your college applications. Once you decide on where you'll be going to college, please respond promptly to all requests for paperwork, particularly regarding housing and particularly for large institutions which often fill prime residences quickly. Continue to share your application outcomes with the IB Office and with recommending teachers, and enter the information in your Naviance accounts.

By mid-January, midyear transcripts were in final stages of preparation for mailing, the last step for most applications. Mrs. Geimer, Ms. Lane and all IB teachers who wrote recommendations deserve a standing ovation for successfully sending out all the necessary paperwork for our seniors. They are still at work responding to requests for supporting documents for scholarship applications. Remember to thank them! By now most colleges should have finished filing all the pieces of the applications, but some will still be sorting through the masses of paper on their end. If you receive a notice that something is missing, please contact Ms. Lane ([email protected] or 720-423-8829). Usually a quick phone call can remedy the situation. If you receive any additional awards or honors that would enhance your applications, you should update the admissions representatives. Now is also a good time to continue looking for additional scholarships; remember www.fastweb.com.

Fight senioritis and maintain your grades. You’ll be glad you did when requesting advanced standing from your college in the fall. We’ve heard tales of students whose acceptances were rescinded due to poor spring grades and no GWIB student should become one of them!

SENIORS AND THEIR PARENTS should be working on, or finished with, financial aid applications. Many highly selective schools require that FAFSA and CSS Profile be filed by February 1, with actual tax returns due soon after. Please check each college’s requirements carefully and meet them to the letter. It is wise to check the status of your FAFSA about a week after you file it online or as soon as you receive a written confirmation if you filed on paper.

JUNIORS should be getting serious about their college search by now and perhaps planning for visits over spring break. Contact College Counselor Rusty Haynes at [email protected] or 719-576-9487 (office) or 719-232-5305 (cell) to schedule an appointment. Working on the college list with Mr. Haynes will help make campus visits better focused and more worth the time and expense.

This is a good time to begin working on a résumé and personal statement to share with Mrs. Geimer when you meet with her later in the spring. Now is also the time to complete your test preparations and to register for whatever combination of SAT, ACT and Subject Tests you will take between now and early June. Testing is not offered during the summer, and it is wise to complete at least one round before then. (A few freshmen and sophomores may also decide to take a Subject Test or two.).

PARENTS OF JUNIORS, be assured that many juniors are not nearly as ready to launch themselves full tilt into the college process as you think they should be. Try to stay out of any power struggles while helping your student acquire the tools to do the job. By the same token, do what you can to guide your student to get on track because next fall will become overwhelmingly busy. Encourage your junior to talk with Mr. Haynes and with current seniors and college students, and make college guides available. Campus visits will also make college much more real and tangible for your junior.

ALL STUDENTS should be thinking about how they will spend their summer break. Many graduating seniors will need to earn their contribution to next year’s tuition and should be lining up a job as early as they can. All students should consider activities like summer study at a college or abroad, volunteer work, an internship or a job. The IB office has some information on file to help jumpstart their research. And don’t forget to include plenty of summer fun too.

STANDARDIZED TESTING: Please familiarize yourselves with what various colleges require and plan accordingly. Details and online registration are available at www.act.org (ACT) and www.collegeboard.com (SAT).
