Pentecost was the occasion of the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the Apostles and other followers of Jesus Christ, as described in Acts 2:1-39. A feast was created commemorating this occasion. For this reason, Pentecost is described by some Christians as the “Birthday of the Church”. The Pentecostal movement of Christianity derives its name from this event, as the movement emphasizes direct personal experience with God, akin to the Descent of the Holy Spirit upon the Apostles. Pentecost is the old Greek and Latin name for the Jewish Shavuot , called the Festival of Weeks, the Festival of Reaping, and Day of the First Fruits. Jews traditionally read the Book of Ruth at Pentecost, as the story links with the grain harvest theme of the festival. Since Shavuot occurs 49 days after the first day of Passover, Hellenistic Jews gave it the name Pentecost , or “fiftieth day”. According to Jewish tradition, Pentecost commemorates God’s giving of the Ten Commandments at Mount Sinai, 49 days after the Exodus. The Descent of the Holy Spirit took place in the Upper Room, or Cenacle, while celebrating the day of Pentecost. It was also the location of the Last Supper. Present were about one hundred and twenty followers of Christ, including the Twelve Apostles (Matthias was Judas’ replacement), his mother Mary, various other women disciples, and his brothers. While those on whom the Spirit had descended were speaking in many languages, the Apostle Peter stood up with the eleven and proclaimed to the crowd that this event was the fulfillment of the prophecy (“I will pour out my spirit”). In Acts 2:17, it reads: “’And in the last days, God says, ‘I will pour out my spirit upon every sort of flesh, and your sons and your daughters will prophesy and your young men will see visions and your old men will dream dreams.” He also mentions that it was the third hour of the day (about 9:00 a.m.). Acts 2:41 then reports: “Then they, that gladly received his word, were baptized and the same day there were added unto them about three thousand souls.” Peter stated that this event was the beginning of a continual outpouring that would be available to all believers from that point on, Jews and Gentiles alike. by Rev. Carmen Jordan “After arresting him, he put him in prison, handing him over to be guarded by four squads of four soldiers each. Herod intended to bring him out for public trial after the Passover. So Peter was kept in prison, but the church was earnestly praying for him” (Acts 12: 4-5 NIV). King Herod had Peter arrested, put in prison, and was preparing to bring him to public trial. Peter, however, had an army of intercessors. The Church, the Body of Christ, had been “earnestly praying for him”. God heard the collective prayers of the people which led to the miraculous release of Peter, who was bound by chains and heavily guarded. What a vivid picture of how God hears and answers prayer! How often and with what zeal are we praying for our family, friends, neighbors, and strangers? What is hindering our earnest and sincere petitions on behalf of others? As the Church prayed for Peter and witnessed the glory of God in his release, let us, too, pray earnestly for one another as we anticipate, experience, and marvel in God’s love, power, and amazing grace. PILGRIM’S VISION STATEMENTThe vision of the Pilgrim Baptist Church is the fulfillment of God’s promise of salvation through the belief in the Ministry of

Jesus Christ and the empowerment of excellence in all people through Christian education and community activism.

Pentecost is the old Greek and Latin name for the Jewish Shavuot, called the Festival of Weeks, the Festival of Reaping, and Day of the First Fruits. Jews traditionally read the Book of Ruth at Pentecost, as the story links with the grain harvest theme of the festival. Since Shavuot occurs 49 days after the first day of Passover, Hellenistic Jews gave it the name Pentecost, or “fiftieth day”.

Present were about one hundred and twenty followers of Christ, including

the Twelve Apostles (Matthias was Judas’ replacement), his mother Mary, various other women disciples, and his brothers.

Acts 2:41 then reports: “Then they, that gladly received his word, were baptized and the same day there were added unto them about three thousand souls.”

Peter stated that this event was the beginning of a continual outpouring that would be available to all believers from that point on, Jews and Gentiles alike.

Harriet Tubman (born Araminta Ross; c. 1822 – March 10, 1913) was an American abolitionist, humanitarian, and an armed scout and spy for the United States Army during the American Civil War. Born into slavery, Tubman escaped and subsequently made some thirteen missions to rescue approximately seventy enslaved families and friends, using the network of antislavery activists and safe houses known as the Underground Railroad. She later helped abolitionist John Brown recruit men for his raid on Harpers Ferry, and in the post-war era was an active participant in the struggle for women’s suffrage.

On April 20, 2016, U.S. Treasury Secretary Jack Lew announced plans to add Tubman to the front of the twenty-dollar bill, moving President Andrew Jackson, a slave owner, to the rear of the bill. Lew instructed the Bureau of Engraving and Printing to expedite the redesign process, though the new bill will not enter circulation until after 2020.

The Trustees, and our devoted counters, are blessed to announce the results of our latest mission endeavor for the Veteran’s Housing Program of Carpenter’s Place.

Over a two-week period we purchased requested items which were specifically desired. Our donations included the following: 8-9 packages of toilet paper 14 Containers of cleanser 5 Containers of toilet bowl cleaner 2 eight-packs of paper towels 6 Bottles of all-purpose pine cleaner 2 Boxes of 33 gallon-sized garbage bags

The love, need, and appreciation from the Carpenter’s Place staff and clients was vividly displayed when the items were delivered. It was a graphic illustration of the many needs as well as the blessings received when we give to those less fortunate than ourselves.
