Celebrating 75 Years of innovation

In 1938 the transport refrigeration business was still in the proverbial ice age, a time when using ice and salt was the only practical way for hauliers

to keep perishable shipments from spoiling. Visionary Joe Numero knew there had to be a better way. Numero commissioned Fred Jones to develop technology to keep perishable produce from spoiling during transport. Jones responded about 30 days later developing the first successful mechanical transport refrigeration unit by combining an engine, a compressor and a condenser to cool trucks. That landmark invention introduced Thermo King as the ultimate refrigerated transport expert, ushering in the era of frozen foods, larger supermarkets, the present-day restaurant industry – and the possibility of fresh food delivery anywhere, anytime – no matter what the season.

Renowned intra-Asia trade operator Wan Hai Lines took delivery of 250 MAGNUM PLUS® reefers earlier this year, replacing older container technology in its fleet. The purchase

came after testing Thermo King’s industry-leading technology for one year.

MAGNUM PLUS, when first introduced in 2009, could run a full 60 percent lower power than standard industry reciprocating reefers. Today, with additional energy-saving refinements, the MAGNUM PLUS saves even more energy and operational costs. It leads the industry in reefer performance and meets environmental mandates around the world, including current Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and California Air Resources Board (CARB) regulations.

Wan Hai’s new reefers are already in service, assisting the company to expand its perishable business into Europe and the USA. Thermo King’s world-wide dealer service network will help ensure that the reefers are operating efficiently no matter where they travel.

This is not Wan Hai Lines first experience with Thermo King. They first leased Thermo King’s MAGNUM® reefers several years back, experiencing great performance and service with the MAGNUM PLUS predecessor.

Wan Hai is listed as #21 in Alphaliner Carrier’s Top 100 Ranking, operating 71 total ships at 168,967 TEUs. Centered in Taiwan, the company’s comprehensive containerized shipping network covers the Far East and Southeast Asia, Indian sub-continent, Red Sea / Gulf, Black Sea, West Coast of U.S.A. and South America. With offices and agencies in every strategic port of call and major city, Wan Hai’s route map continues to expand in order to provide a complete global network to meet and satisfy its customers’ needs.

Wan Hai is currently testing Thermo King’s Advanced Fresh Air Management (AFAM+) technology to gain a better understanding of how fresh produce—and its customers—can benefit from enhanced container environment conditions during transit. AFAM+ was first introduced by Thermo King in 2002. The product effectively manages the changes in oxygen and carbon dioxide levels in a container when fruit and vegetables respire to achieve the optimum combination without product dehydration.

“Asia is a 21st century main engine in terms of driving the world’s expansion and growth. Wan Hai, which started its business transporting lumber between Japan and South East Asia, has operated for decades in Asia,” said Christopher Sun, Thermo King sales director. “Today, Wan Hai connects Asia to the rest of the world and is helping to grow Asia’s exuberant economic expansion. It is one of the top Intra-Asia carriers in terms of both container volume and service coverage. We are excited to partner with them and to help them further grow their service coverage area and quality services.”

It’s been one year since the 2012 Olympic Games took place in London, but UK-based Spacewise is still reeling from its amazing experience as the supplier of refrigerated and

ambient containers for the various Olympic venues. And with good reason, the ‘chilling’ performance of Spacewise containers with Thermo King refrigeration units proved to be gold medal worthy!

Spacewise was granted the British Olympic Association (BOA) license as supplier of refrigerated and ambient containers for the London 2012 Games Olympic Venues.

“We strive to provide consistent high quality service, supplying containers to a myriad of indoor and outdoor events year-round,” said Sean Bell, general manager, Spacewise. “Our involvement in the 2012 Olympic Games epitomizes our work and our ability to deliver the perfect solutions and service. It was the utmost compliment and honor to be selected as an official supplier.”

With 37 total venues to service – 12 within Olympic park and the others scattered throughout the country, Spacewise’s task was daunting yet they performed seamlessly. Thermo King’s MAGNUM PLUS® and MAGNUM® technology played a big role.

“Spacewise has invested heavily over the last two years in Thermo King’s MAGNUM PLUS and MAGNUM reefers, bringing these state-of-the-art and energy efficient machines into its fleet,” said Bell. “This played a keen role in our accreditation criteria with BOA to contribute to a ‘greener games’ and it made clear sense to utilize our Thermo King-cooled containers for the Olympics.

“We have also developed an excellent working relationship with Thermo King and knew that throughout the project we would have back-up service that is second to none due to Thermo King’s outstanding dealer network,” continued Bell.

Spacewise supplied more than 350 10-foot, 20-foot and 40-foot refrigerated containers during the Olympic Games, all of which were in service for three months. Their expertise and logistics team were able to offer a complete, faultless service from start to finish. Approximately 280 of the containers featured Thermo King technology, 60 percent of which were MAGNUM PLUS units. The remainder was Thermo King’s MAGNUM model. “These were added to the Spacewise fleet specifically to meet Olympic contract needs,” explained Bell.

The containers were not only used to stock perishables for general sale to the public, but also for the supply of the athletes who were stationed all over the country. The containers preserved a variety of temperature-sensitive products including soda, ice cream and smoothies, as well as pizzas and gourmet foods such as scallops, langoustines and fresh fish. In addition, around 10 containers were modified as beer chillers for use at both the Olympic Park and Eton Dorney for the rowing events.

“The performance of the containers was excellent throughout the duration of service. There were very few problems despite ambient temperatures and the hours and type of service the machines performed,” said Bell.

All Spacewise containers utilized for the 2012 Olympic Games were absorbed into the company’s general fleet, which today boasts 800+ containers. Spacewise has been working closely with Thermo King since 2007. The company has purchased more than 250 new Thermo King machines in the past two years.

SPACEWISE is the trade name of ICS Terminals (UK) Limited, a wholly owned subsidiary of TAL International Container Corp., one of the world’s largest container leasing companies. Since it was founded in 1989, Spacewise has established itself as a leader in the UK container leasing market, offering a full range of containers for dry ambient storage and temperature controlled and humidity controlled refrigerated storage.

Celebrating 75 Years of innovationThat simple ingenuity continues to shape the global industry of

transport refrigeration today. Thermo King is committed to being the worldwide leader in transport temperature control systems for trailers, truck bodies, buses, shipboard containers and rail cars, as well as air. (The Air 100, the first active refrigerated system for air freight, was introduced by Thermo King in 2005.) Thermo King’s innovative products and services provide the ultimate assurance of freshness, comfort, reliability, efficiency and performance for global customers every day.

“Providing solutions and real technological innovation has been Thermo King’s mission since Day 1 and the results can be seen in every market in which we participate,” says Michel van Roozendaal, vice president, Thermo King global marine solutions. “The marine industry is a perfect example.”

Thermo King first applied its technological savvy to the container industry in 1956 and has never looked back when it comes to introducing ground-breaking technologies that provide economic efficiency and performance without compromising the load or the environment. In fact, Thermo King has been a leader in technological innovation within marine, changing the game in 2002 with the introduction of a hermetic scroll compressor system using R-404A refrigerant through the MAGNUM® reefer.

“The MAGNUM unit was lighter, more powerful and more energy efficient,” says van Roozendaal. “It reduced the average energy consumption then available to the industry by 28 percent. It also provided a wider range of cargo temperatures, offering a -35 degree C setpoint that extended reefer box life. MAGNUM owners benefited from energy savings; and the world benefitted from decreased carbon dioxide emissions. It truly was a game changer.”

Intermodal TransportationFred Jones’ creativity leads Thermo King to ship the first refrigerated container overseas to support U.S. Troops in the Korean War effort in the early 1950s, opening the door for global transportation of temperature-sensitive goods and materials by sea, truck or rail. Cranes lift these refrigerated containers onto ship decks, boxcars or trailer chassis in this intermodal transport method. Integrated Container Unit

In 1973, Thermo King releases the CF-50, 60 and 75 marine container units, which are integrated into the front wall of the container. This “picture frame” concept removes duplication of structure and the permanent generator, which is not used while the unit is connected to the vessel’s electrical supply. Now customers can ship more product per load, and the units offer significantly more value for the money.

Commercial ContainerIn 1956, Thermo King launches the first commercial refrigerated marine container unit. Soon after comes the release of a specialty seagoing unit, the SROL, designed to withstand salt air. With the introduction of this product line, an industry is born to transport a variety of goods – fresh and frozen – all across the world.

Thermo King honed its technology further in 2008 when it introduced the MAGNUM PLUS® reefer, which offers a further 45 percent savings in energy consumption on average … without cargo compromise. While reefer efficiency and performance continue to be priorities in all product innovations, the environment and economical operation will never be negotiated.

Complementing the MAGNUM product line is Advanced Fresh Air Management (AFAM+), which uses ventilation on demand to regulate carbon dioxide levels within the box environment to maintain premium post-harvest quality and increase shelf life. Developed in 2003 by Thermo King, AFAM+ is a safe, environmentally-conscious choice for shipping perishable cargoes.

Thermo King innovated the generator set (genset) market in 2007 with its SG-3000 series, a genset product line developed with diesel fuel price fluctuations and carbon footprint concerns in mind. The result was efficiency like no other, beating out competitor models in fuel efficiency by nearly 20 percent. Of course, never completely satisfied, Thermo King has already upgraded its genset product.

Thermo King introduced the SG-4000 genset line to the industry in December 2012 re-defining efficiency and sustainability by raising the bar once again in reliability and performance while exceeding the toughest environmental regulations in place today. The series offers ‘Compliancy Plus’ ensuring environmental compliance now and in the future, around the globe.

And there is more … Thermo King introduced the SuperFreezer, the first unit to keep cargo at a -60 degree C deep freeze, in 1996. No doubt, Thermo King is proud of its contributions to the Marine industry.

“Every product we develop or innovate is done with our customers in mind,” says van Roozendaal. “We want to provide solutions that will help our customers operate more efficiently while providing the highest quality product to the world and ensuring the environment is protected for generations to come. That is our goal as we begin our next 75 years!”

Thermo King Corporation 5

SuperFreezerIn 1996, Thermo King acquires Sabroe Reefer Cool of Denmark, which brings new customers, a dedicated container plant and a specialty container unit - the CRR 40 Deep Freeze (SuperFreezer). With this unit, Thermo King becomes the only manufacturer to deliver a unit that can maintain -60°C (-76°F) to ensure sashimi-grade tuna and other high-value products can be delivered anywhere in the world.

SG Series of GensetsThermo King innovated the genset market in 2007 with the SG-3000 series, a product built to tackle the industry’s fuel and environmental concerns. The upgraded SG-4000 line was introduced in 2012 and offers new meaning to efficiency and sustainability.

MAGNUM® ContainerIn 2002, Thermo King introduces the MAGNUM® container unit, which is able to maintain -35°C (-31°F), a lower set point than any competitive container unit on the market. When paired with the optional advanced fresh air management (AFAM+) system, this unit’s deep-frozen capability has a considerable impact on product shelf life, allowing shipping lines to enter into new markets.

Thermo King introduced MAGNUM PLUS® in 2009. It reduced energy consumption another 20% and maintains an even more impressive -40°C (-40°F).

T hermo King’s Edwin Bezooijen will never be one of those people who say, “I wish I would have done that…” Instead, he’s going on an adventure of a lifetime.

As we all know, Thermo King Marine is a global business. Edwin, who’s been with Thermo King for 6 years and in the marine industry for nearly 25 years, is taking the word ‘global’ to a new level. He is taking time off from his career to sail around the world with his sailor wife, Margo.

“We have sailed many sea miles throughout the past 20+ years, mainly on vacations and long-distance races,” said Edwin. “We have always been drawn to the sea and share the love of sailing; in fact, we live on a yacht near Rotterdam. We decided before more years pass us by, we need to take on this adventure now and make memories for a lifetime.”

Edwin and Margo set sail on June 24th travelling south via the UK, France, Spain, Portugal, Madeira, the Canary Islands, Morocco, Cape Verde, and Gambia. They plan to cross over the Atlantic Ocean in December to Brazil and after that go North to the Caribbean and then North America. The planning will continue from there.

The boat that is carrying them is a 42-foot Bavaria cruiser, and ‘her’ name is EBIJMAR (translated Edwin by Margo). The boat is structurally reinforced in many places and specially prepared for a trip like this.

“While we are very sad to say good-bye to Edwin, we cannot be happier for him and the adventure he and Margo are embarking on,” said Dermott Crombie, outgoing vice

president, global marine solutions. “We will be keeping tabs on him and his ports of call, and we wish him smooth sailing along the way.”

As for Edwin, he invites all of his Thermo King friends, colleagues and customers to stay in touch by following his voyage on Facebook where he will be documenting his travels on Facebook/sy.ebijmar.

Fruit Logistica – February 2013More than 55,000 visitors from 120 countries gathered in Berlin in early February to present and gather information about the entire value chain within the fresh produce trade. With 90 percent of the exhibitors and 80 percent of visitors travelling from outside of Germany, Fruit Logistica has become one of the most international trade fairs that take place worldwide. Thermo King representatives participated, visiting with global customers throughout the three-day event.

Cool Logistics Africa – April 2013The second Cool Logistics Africa was held in April with discussions centred on the theme “Innovation, Investment and Efficiency: Delivering Africa’s Cold Chain Potential”. The event brought together producers, exporters, importers and retailers from multiple perishables sectors with major shipping lines, logistics providers, ports, cold store operators and other key stakeholders who shared, conspired and debated just how to improve Africa’s cold chain efficiency. Thermo King was a proud sponsor and panel participant.

A variety of discussions and presentations took place throughout the three-day event, all seeking to explore practical solutions to today’s challenges against changing global trade, perishable production/consumption and infrastructure development patterns. Thermo King’s Dermott Crombie presented at Cool Logistics Africa as part of the Innovation Forum.

Crombie’s presentation discussed the Management of Temperature Control in Transportation of Respiring & Non-respiring Perishables. He discussed the challenges different cargoes present when it comes to temperature management, the importance of proper airflow and box designs, why colder temperature transport is better, various technologies that are available, and also the importance of proper data.
