Enabling Entrepreneurs Rockwall, Texas-based Texas Star Express offers

drivers a unique truck leasing opportunity to help aspiring owner-operators get started in a fi nancially-

responsible way. The 36-month leasing package includes a used tractor retrofi tted with a Thermo King TriPac™ Hybrid Auxiliary Idle Reduction and Temperature Management System (APU) and one free year of business book-keeping.

The company, which fi rst opened its doors in 1983, has been owned by EPES Carriers, Inc. of Greensboro, N.C. since 1991. Currently Texas Star Express runs 300 company-owned Freightliner and Peterbilt tractors and owns 1,280 trailers, the majority of which are Wabash Duraplates. The company has 105 owner-operators on its payroll, but is working towards a 50-50 company driver to owner-operator ratio. Texas Star Express management is hoping its lease truck program will help even that spread, and they have a waiting list that indicates they are well on their way.

“We’ve been turning people away for the time being,” explained Karen Anderson, director of recruiting. “We anticipate that as our busy season begins again, we’ll be able to accommodate other drivers’ dreams of owning their own business.”

2 A Matter of Degrees

Karen was an original founder of Texas Star Express’s truck leasing program back in 2003. She left the company in 2004 to go back to Stevens Transport, where she had helped kick-start an Owner-Operator Division and was next charged with aiding the expansion of the company’s Alliance Lease Fleet. Karen returned to Texas Star in April 2007 when Mike McClenden, president, asked her to “breathe new life” into the truck lease program. Her experience with Thermo King’s TriPac system while at Stevens became instrumental in doing just that. “The success we had with TriPac at Stevens Transport, including the data compiled and driver testimonials, convinced me 100 percent that we could not have a successful lease program at Texas Star Express without retrofi tting the TriPac,” explained Karen.

According to Mike, “With fuel costs and idling issues being such big factors in today’s trucking world, Karen decided to add the TriPac system into our truck leasing offerings, and it really became the difference-maker for the program. The product benefi ts ‘sweeten’ the deal – and help round out the opportunity we provide company drivers to make the move to owner-operator.”

Essentially, Texas Star Express is providing a service that allows drivers to get into a reliable tractor (375,000 miles +) that is retrofi tted with a TriPac system for fuel and emission effi ciencies and will be completely driver-owned within three years. The company offers the fi nancing at equipment cost; there is no mark-up or dollars earned by Texas Star Express. Drivers benefi t from fair interest rates, and they get the business support needed to ensure solid business management – from bookkeeping, to fuel cost management tools, to profi t and loss worksheets, to general advice.

“We don’t directly benefi t fi nancially from this program, but the economics make great sense in the long term,” explained Mike. “Hiring and driver retention is improved. Turn-over rates for owner-operators are about 1/3 that of company drivers. Owner operators drive 200 miles more, on average, than company drivers. They enjoy working for themselves and having more control in their revenue-earning potential. In addition, we see a signifi cant savings with the decreased number of benefi t packages our company provides.”

Drivers also benefi t from the TriPac system, which allows a quieter night sleep, emission regulation compliance and a signifi cant fuel savings. “We’re seeing a ½ - 1 gallon MPG fuel difference between TriPac and non-TriPac tractors,” said Karen. “The TriPac adds approximately $200 to the monthly lease, or about $50 a week. However, the fuel savings add up to about $100 a week, which offsets the cost and puts more money into drivers’ pockets. Essentially, the TriPac system pays for itself within 15-16 months. It’s the owner-operator APU of choice and is a great addition to the used tractors we are using in our program as it conserves engine hours.”

And the drivers do love the TriPac system. Driver Kenneth Blaylock said, “I love the unit for the not-so-obvious reasons like no vibration to the cab; noise level is minimal. I can hear other APU units that are parked near me. My fuel mileage is up and the TriPac system makes a huge difference.”

Another driver on the leasing program, Bob Berry, said this. “The Thermo King TriPac system has had a profound impact on my business by making me more aware of the saving potential related to fuel cost reduction. The overall affect has resulted in an increase of 1.5 MPG, which is $300-400 a week. I credit both Texas Star Express and Thermo King for making this environmentally-friendly technology available to drivers.”

Making sure the drivers are comfortable and knowledgeable about the TriPac system is, of course, an important step in its proper use and performance. Karen and Mike work with Thermo King of Dallas and appreciate the great relationship that has been established. “Roy Smith and the entire staff are so easy to work with,” said Karen. “They are very customer-oriented and are always willing to answer questions – even driver questions over the phone, and have partnered with us to make installs as easy and convenient for us as possible. We really appreciate their support.”

Texas Star Express currently has 24 drivers on the lease truck program with TriPac systems and plan to add another 25 in the next 8 months. The fi rst round of tractors was purchased specifi cally for the program. They hope to begin utilizing company-owned tractors, which would be retrofi tted with TriPac systems, for the program as soon as they have a group that reaches the ideal mileage needed to make the lease package affordable.

TransAm Trucking of Olathe, Kansas, recently received an Environmental Excellence Award from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency SmartWaySM Transport

Partnership for its leadership in conserving energy and lowering greenhouse gas emissions from its transportation and freight activities. TransAm reduced its governed truck speeds to 68 mph in 2005 and 65 mph in 2007, and reduced engine horsepower in 2005. Another key factor in the TransAm win was the installation of Thermo King’s TriPacTM Hybrid Auxiliary Idle Reduction and Temperature Management System (APU) on all of the company’s tractors since 2005. Because an idling tractor uses 1.1 gallons of fuel per hour compared to only .25 gallons per hour for the TriPac-equipped tractor, the result has been reduced emissions and an overall savings of $7,116 per year, per tractor. Additionally, all tractors purchased since 2004 are aero-profi le equipped with integrated roof faring, side faring, mirrors, front bumper and side skirts.

“Our partnership with SmartWay Transport demonstrates that companies can save money and help the environment,” said Russ McElliott, chief operating offi cer. “The partnership provides us with tools and information, and contributes on a daily basis to signifi cant improvements in our effi ciency and environmental performance. We urge all of our colleagues in the freight industry to consider joining SmartWay.” TransAm Trucking was one of 34 companies and organizations, from among the Partnerships’ more than 600 Partners, to receive this distinction.

The company has always pushed to stay at the forefront of technology. “TransAm is extremely innovative and gains the advantage over their competition by aggressively researching new technologies. The TriPac system has given them one of those advantages,” says Dave Burns, vice president and general manager at CSTK, Inc., the Thermo King dealer that works with TransAm. “They are a company that thinks in the future, not of the future. They were utilizing APUs well before other customers even heard of them. Our partnership is a relationship built on trust, not only in the products we support, but in the people we support.”

SmartWay was introduced by the EPA and a select group of fi fteen shipping and business leaders in 2004 as an innovative, market-based partnership to reduce fuel use, greenhouse gas emissions and air pollutants from the freight sector. Today, more than 600 businesses and organizations of all sizes have joined the Partnership — from Fortune 500 companies to family-owned businesses, each working to improve their environmental performance. Together, based on their three-year commitments, these companies, including TransAm Trucking, are conserving more than 600 million gallons of

diesel fuel per year, saving the trucking industry nearly $2 billion in annual fuel costs and eliminating nearly 7 million metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions that contribute to global warming. By 2012, the SmartWay program, with full industry participation, estimates that it will achieve annual fuel savings of 3.3 to 6.6 billion gallons of diesel fuel nationwide, eliminating between 33 and 66 million metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions and up to 200,000 tons of nitrogen oxide emissions.

“The EPA is pleased to recognize Partners with SmartWay Excellence Awards. The award winners are leading the way toward a cleaner, more effi cient transportation future with strategies that reduce emissions and increase profi ts,” said Margo T. Oge, director, EPA Offi ce of Transportation and Air Quality.

Woody Bogler Trucking neither looks nor operates anything like it did when its doors opened in the early 1920s. The company, founded by William Bogler

in Rosebud, Mo., fi rst used a horse-drawn wagon to carry clay to the railroad for transport to brick plants. The fi rst truck was a 1924 chain-driven International. Today, the company operates 126 top-of-the-line tractor trailers, almost half of which are equipped with Thermo King TriPac™ Hybrid Auxiliary Idle Reduction and Temperature Management Systems, saving the company $330/month in fuel per in-use TriPac.

“Idle reduction and ‘green’ initiatives are the way of the future,” said Tracy Bogler, vice president and grandson of William Bogler. Tracy started with the company in 1994, working with his father, Woodrow “Woody” Bogler, who had assumed the company in 1954. “I think all states will be ‘no idle’ by 2015 for environmental reasons. It’s the right thing to do.

“But besides the environmental considerations, we benefi t by choosing the TriPac system in other ways too. It saves us signifi cant money in fuel, especially as fuel costs go up. In addition, it’s helping our engines last longer. Engines build a lot of carbons; if we reduce the engine run time, we reduce the carbon output. We are also able to extend the oil drain maintenance on the trucks. This translates into extended engine and truck life cycles … and more money savings for us.”

Woody Bogler has been running TriPac systems since 2006 and currently has 52 in its fl eet. Company drivers love the system’s quietness, the climate control and the power outlets.

“We’ve been impressed with the product and the service we receive from CSTK (Central States Thermo King) since day one,” said Tracy. “The TriPac system is the premium APU product. We are committed to buying the best equipment so that we can assure our customers that their products will be delivered on time and safely.”

According to Sasha McKenney, sales representative at CSTK, “Woody Bogler Trucking takes immense pride in having a fl eet with top of the line, high performing equipment. Tracy and his team spent a lot of time deciding which APU to purchase, and we consider it a true compliment and testament to the TriPac system when he made it their APU of choice. Tracy has become a great champion for the product and is excited to share the money savings his fl eet is realizing by running TriPac systems.”

Tabitha Fischer, Thermo King sales manager agrees. “Tracy Bogler has been an excellent reference for other fl eets in the area. He encourages us to send customers his way to hear about his experiences with other APUs and the TriPac system. We have a true partnership with Woody Bogler Trucking as they are also a transportation provider for Hussmann, our sister company in St. Louis.”

Woody Bogler operates only new or late-model tractors with an age of less than two years. This $23 million half dry van and half end dump business runs its fl eet in the lower 48 states. Having ‘grown up right along with the trucking industry,’ Woody Bogler Trucking understands that the only constant in trucking is change. They embrace it – to not only provide the level of service customers deserve and demand, but to operate in accordance with all state and federal regulations.

“Our use of the TriPac system is one way we are doing just that,” said Tracy. “And we look forward to adding more to our fl eet in 2008.”
