SEPTEMBER 2015PMI Insights

This month's discussion will focus on "hitting the ground run-ning" on your next project and will be led by Facilitator Dan Heck, M.A., PMP. Many project managers take assignments in project environments well below their skills, experience and expectations of a mature, project-run organization. Key organization questions require exploration, such as:

• How do you interact, teach and lead stakeholders and team members who have little understanding or commitment to project processes, and little or no common project language?

During this knowledge sharing event, we will break into small groups to discuss fundamental project areas and how to make a positive impact, no matter the level of project management maturity. We will also review how to assess the existing level of organizational project management maturity and how to best set expectations for successful project execution.

The event is FREE to attend, however advance registration is required by September 15, 2015. No registrations will be accepted after September 15th. Please provide your contact information and 1 to 3 topic related questions.

To register for this event, go to the PMI Chicagoland website, www.pmi-chicagoland.org, under "Events". If you experience registration issues, contact Cynthia Andersen at [email protected]. Attendees may earn 2 Professional Development Units (PDUs) for this event.

About our Facilitator: Dan Heck, M.A., PMP, has been consulting and facilitating inter-nationally as Principal of Bluefuse, LLC, for more than 25 years. Prior to that, Dan was a Principal Design Engineer for Honeywell Aerospace, managing a wide variety of electro-mechanical prod-ucts. Participants appreciate Dan's strong mix of technical and people skills resulting in valuable workshop outcomes.

SEPTEMBER 2015PMI Insights

SPOTLIGHT ON:

PMI Chicagoland Volunteer Services

Larry Witham, PMP

Volunteering is the backbone of the PMI organization. The PMI Chicagoland chapter values and appreciates each volunteer's time, efforts and expertise. The Chapter Volunteer team will be running a series of Volunteer Spotlights to acknowledge and share individual's perspective on volunteering with the Chapter and giving back to the profession. This month's Spotlight is on Larry Witham who has served for 13 years in different volunteer leadership roles (Director of Business Outreach, VP of Outreach, VP of Communications, VP at Large, VP of Operations). Globally, Larry has worked on the OPM3 Standards team and has been a Virtual Community leader with the Organizational Project Management Virtual Community.

The team had the opportunity to interview Larry Witham on his years of volunteer service, and here are the highlights of the conversation...

Volunteer Team: Why do you choose to volunteer?Larry: I started volunteering in order to get connected with other PM professionals in my area. Also, when I started, the PM profession was not well known or accepted in a lot of businesses and organizations. I wanted to help promote the profession as an important part of an organization's success. I really believe in the PMI mission statement.

Volunteer Team: Why is it so important to you to be a volunteer leader?Larry: Being in leadership with PMI is a good way to try out and develop your leadership skills. It is a safe and supportive environ-ment to learn leadership if you have not been given the chance on your job. Some of the best leadership training I have ever received, I have gotten through PMI.

Volunteer Team: What is your most rewarding volunteer experience?Larry: When you conceive of a new service or event like the Executive Council, Spring Leadership meeting or Remote Satellite meetings and then work with a team of great vol-unteers to make it a reality, it is great to see someone then pick up that idea and make it even better.

Volunteer Team: What suggestions would you offer volunteers new to the Chapter?Larry: I would say, just do it. Find something you are interested in and volunteer for it. The more involved you get, the more oppor-tunities you see and the more you can develop your leadership skills. Stretch yourself. Try things you have never done before. Before you know it, you will be helping others get involved and help them develop as PMs. I think that may be the most reward-ing part of volunteering.

Volunteer Team: If you had one volunteer wish; what would it be?Larry: I wish I had gotten more involved in PMI earlier in my career. It would have had a bigger impact and helped me to become more successful earlier. Also, I would have had more time to do more things with PMI. It is exciting to be part of a Global Organization that is on the leading edge of Project Management and of global professional organizations overall.

Chapter LeadershipThe Leadership Team consists of two groups. There is an elected Executive Board made up of the President, Past President and Vice Presidents. The primary function of this board is to set the strategic plan for the chapter and to oversee the execution of that plan by the Directors and their volunteers. The Directors are appointed by the Executive Board and are responsible for the execution of the strategic plan through the tactical day to day operation of the chapter. The Directors coordinate the efforts of chapter member volunteers to accomplish the activities of the chapter. If you are interested in serving your PMI Chicagoland Chapter, contact our Director of Volunteers for more information.
