n 1851: Stagecoach stop built in the location of the present day Pepsi Americasdistribution plant

n 1852: Memphis-Charleston Railroad opened, improving transportation to andfrom Collierville. The passenger fare from Collierville to Memphis was .75 centsand children under 12 rode for half-price.

n 1861: A group of 80 Collierville men organized the Wigfall Grays unit in honorof Texas Senator Louis Trezevant Wigfall who was known for his movingspeeches supporting the Confederate cause. On May 11, the unit received or-ders to leave Collierville on May 15. The women of Collierville had previouslygathered together to make uniforms for the soldiers, but there were still fouruniforms left to be made when the orders were received. After much delibera-tion, the women decided to work on sacred Sunday to finish the four uniforms.

n October 11, 1863: The Battle of Collierville, one of the bloodiest Civil War bat-tles in Shelby County, took place. Confederate General James R. Chalmers re-ceived orders from the Commander of the Mississippi Cavalry, Major GeneralStephen D. Lee, to move his forces against the Federals on the Memphis-Charleston Railroad to distract the Federals attention from the movement ofthe Mississippi Cavalry. The strategy was to divert the Federals attention bysending a false report that a Confederate force would attack Corinth, MS. Thisstrategy would give the Confederates the opportunity to gain control of therailroad at Collierville. About 10:00 a.m. on this Sunday morning, the Con-federates completely surprised the Federals with an attack that lead to thecapture of a large number of prisoners, forty wagons and other valuable loot. The attack had been executed as planned until around noon when GeneralSherman’s train unexpectedly arrived. The Confederates eventually cap-tured the train, taking 15-20 more prisoners as well as Sherman’s prizedpossession, his horse “Dolly.” About this time, Federal reinforcements ar-rived and General Chalmers realized many lives would be lost, so he or-dered a withdrawal not knowing that the Federals had no heavy artillery.Collierville’s location on the rail line placed it in the midst of several CivilWar skirmishes. In all, there were about 10 battles fought in or nearCollierville. The Civil War was devastating to Collierville as the originalTown was burned to the ground and many lives were lost.

n 1867: Harrison Irby and Dr. Virginus Leake bought approximately90 acres at the present-day Town Square location. They divided theacreage into lots, creating a business district to rise from the ashesthat the Civil War left behind.

n 1872: Collierville’s Town Square business district was establishedand included a park as its centerpiece. The park included a two-story bandstand as well as peacocks and a deer. The bandstand

stood for 90 years hosting town bands and Beale St. performers such as W.C. Handy. To thisday, Collierville’s historic Town Square is the only one in Shelby County and unique in the fact thatit is not anchored by a courthouse.

n May 7, 1875: Grand Calico Ball held. After the Civil War, many families could not afford silkand satin for fancy dresses. The organizers of the Ball did not want any of the young ladies inthe area to feel uncomfortable attending the Ball in calico dresses while others were in fancierdresses. Therefore, the Ball became known as the Calico Ball so that everyone would feel com-fortable attending regardless of their apparel.

n 1876: Collierville was one of the heaviest shipping points on the Memphis-Charleston Railroadwith over 12,000 bales of cotton being shipped to Memphis annually.

n 1878: Magnolia Cemetery was established at the Brown family burying grounds. The gazebolocated in the older section of the cemetery is one of the oldest landmarks in Collierville. It is4

Every town has a unique

story to tell; stories that

include heroic acts, charming

characters and tragedies that

made them stronger. In

1836, Jesse R. Collier

advertised in the Memphis

Enquirer “the Town of Collier

beginning of growth that

continues today.

believed to have been erected in 1882. Magnolia Cemetery is the final restingplace for approximately 56 men who served in the Confederate Army includingone Unknown Soldier who was buried in the Brown Family cemetery.

n August 1878: Tragedy hit Collierville and much of the South with the YellowFever epidemic. Collierville established a rigid quarantine against people andgoods from Memphis and surrounding areas. Many families and individualsfled the area, leaving only a few to care for the sick and bury the dead. TheCivil War was a time of great suffering for Collierville, but Yellow Fever creptinto the Town indiscriminately claiming the lives of young and old, male and fe-male, rich and poor. Many victims of the Yellow Fever epidemic are buried inMagnolia Cemetery.

n 1887: The oldest business in Collierville, McGinnis Hardware, opens asThomas J. Morris Lumber and is still located on the Town Square. To thisday, entering the hardware store is like stepping back in time. Other TownSquare businesses that once contributed to the local economy included cardealerships, general stores, a pharmacy, banks, a theater and hotels. Col-lierville’s strong economy began on the Town Square and expanded to in-clude several industries such as cotton, lumber, cheese and toys.

n 1915: W.W. McGinnis had oak trees hauled from his farm and planted inthe Town Square Park. Many of these beautiful towering oaks still stand inthe Park.

n 1932: The Great Depression hits Collierville and the entire nation. A newbuilding for Collierville High School was one of the first projects in Tennesseebuilt by the Civilian Work Administration (which later became the WorksProgress Authority). The plans for the school were elaborate in order to cre-ate the maximum number of jobs. The auditorium was the most sophisti-cated in the area and was used as a theater on Fridays. Afternoon matineeswere .15 cents and evening shows were .25 cents.

n 1933: Due to the boll weevil, cotton was no longer profitable for manyfarmers. Collierville becomes a dairy town and Swift & Co. opens a hoopcheese plant in Collierville. To celebrate Collierville’s dairy industry a CheeseCarnival is started and lasts for several days. Events included concerts, dances, parades and the announcement of the Cheese Carnival Queen andher court.

n 1940-41: The United Daughters of the Confederacy erected a marker onthe Town Square in memory of the Civil War battles fought in Collierville. They also led the construction of concrete walkwaysin the form of St. Andrews Cross, just as it appearson the Confederate Flag. The park became knownas Confederate Park.

n 1944: Collierville was in need of a new depot. Dueto the scarcity of building supplies, arrangementswere made to have the LaGrange, TN depot cut inhalf, placed on two flat train cars and transported toCollierville. The “new” depot opened on October 3,1944.

n 1955: A tornado struck Collierville destroying manybusinesses on the Town Square and leveling the his-toric 2-story bandstand.

n 1977: The original Collierville stagecoach stop wasrelocated to the Town Square and restored to resem-ble the original 1850s structure and interior décor.

n 1984: Powell Road Park opened with four baseball fields, four soccerfields, four lighted tennis courts, a playground and a 1.2-mile paved walkingtrail. The park also included a Community Center with a basketball court, racquetball courts and meeting rooms.

n 1987: Harrell Theatre opened to the public presenting Winnie the Pooh.

n 1993-1995: The historic Collierville Town Square is renovated to includebrick walkways, new benches and a musical clock.

n 1994: The Collierville Greenbelt Trail Master Plan was adopted to includeover 60-miles of trails and sidewalk connections. The system will eventuallyconnect to other trails in Shelby County and will allow pedestrians and bikersto go from Collierville to the Mississippi River.
