Howard Pressman, CFP® President’s Message
“Nobody on the road,
Nobody on the beach
I feel it in the air
The summer's out of reach
Empty lake, empty streets
The sun goes down alone”
Those are the lyrics to my favorite song, Boys of Summer by Don Henley, and they perfectly sum up how I am feeling
this time of year. But, as I am sad to say goodbye to summer, its slower pace and opportunities for planning and
reflection, I am also glad to move into autumn and getting back to full speed. I hope you were able to spend some time
on a neglected project or two or even something you’re passionate about.
There wasn’t a whole lot going on in the chapter during August. We had a happy hour and reunion at Chima, which
was so much fun. If you’ve never attended one of our reunions, I highly encourage you to join us. One thing I’ve
always been amazed at is how many pioneers of our profession are members of our chapter. Having the opportunity to
chat with the people who literally created financial planning as we know it today is an amazing and inspirational
experience.
We also had an Allied Professionals happy hour at the Tyson’s Biergarten which was very well attended. I spoke with
quite a few people and made some great new contacts.

We have an action-packed September in store for you, starting with an Allied Professionals event with CE on the 6th.,
and a new Allied Professional event just announced for September 11th. Our regular monthly meeting is in Bethesda
on the 13th where we’ll start the day with an ethics presentation from Dan Candura and then have James Philip Head
Esq. of Williams Mullen to help us plan the effective transfer of our clients’ closely held business interests to the next
generation. Friday, the 14th is the chapter’s Day of Service. Join NexGen and other members as we lend a hand at the
Northern Virginia Family Service Clock Tower Thrift Shop in Falls Church. On the 18th, MoneyGuide Pro will be
hosting a webinar on Delivering Consistent, High Value Advice. If that all wasn’t enough, we finish up September
with an Allied Professional happy hour on the 26th. Please see our website to learn more and sign up for these great
events. It’s also not too soon to be thinking about Metro Washington Financial Planning Day which will be held on
October 20th. This is another rewarding event and a great way to help others and feel the power of financial planning.
I hope you had a great summer, that your batteries are recharged and you’re excited about the rest of the year. Thank
you for all that you do for your clients, our profession and each other. The conversations I have with my peers in the
FPA always motivates, energizes and encourages me. If you haven’t made it to a meeting in a while, please join us,
you’ll be glad you did.
All the best,

Active versus passive investing has been long debated in the investment industry. What started in the 1960s as a
theory on attributing a manager's performance to beta and alpha, became a reality with the inception and democratization of the index fund in 1975.
Since then, a debate has raged for decades about the viability of "passive" investing and its place in a prudent, diversified portfolio. Although many prognosticators would agree that some combination of indexing (or at least the concepts that make it possible) and active is appropriate, there is still a diffuse set of opinions on the subject.
On Thursday, September 6th, 2018, come hear from three RIAs, who all employ active and passive indexing differently to give their clients the best chance for investment success. Following will be a Q&A session.
Learning Objectives:
1. Get a better understanding for how indexing and active are being considered as part of a portfolio allocation.
2. Learn about trends, research and tools assisting PMs in their decision making and execution of portfolio strategy.

FPA National Capital Area Presents
Member Luncheon Program and Presentation of Outstanding Member Award
September 13, 2018 - Schedule and CE Below
Bethesda Country Club, Bethesda, MD
Business Succession Planning for
Owners of Closely-Held Businesses
Presenter: James Philip Head, Esq., of Williams Mullen, P.C., Tysons Corner, Virginia
Owners of family businesses work hard and make many sacrifices to create profitable companies that, they hope,
will last for many generations. But will those companies truly survive through the years and down the family line?
Research shows that approximately 30% of family and businesses survive into the second generation; 15% are still
viable into the third generation; and only about 3% of all family businesses operate into the fourth generation or
beyond. Transitioning a business from one generation to the next is perhaps the most difficult, and yet critical,
challenge that family business owners face. Frequently, a family business’s failure can generally be traced to just
one factor: a lack of family business succession planning.
Succession planning presents a great opportunity to maximize opportunities and create a multi-generational
institution that embodies the founder’s mission and values long after the founder is gone. In this business succession
planning presentation, you will learn more about how to:
Help preserve unity and harmony among family members; Transition ownership of the family business to
subsequent generations; Continue the founder’s set of core values; Minimize wealth transfer taxes
Key strategies include the following: Voting Agreements, Valuation Discounts, Buy/Sell
Agreements, Gifts / Sales to Intentionally Defective, Recapitalizations, Defined Valuation Clauses,
Restricted Stock, GRATS (Grantor Retained Annuity Trusts)

MEET OUR MEMBERS IN THE NEWS:
Former Navy intelligence officer helps low-income clients for free By Ann Marsh, FinancialPlanning.com
As 2015 drew to a close, DéShaun Monique Stafford and her husband, now both 30, found they
didn’t have enough cash to pay their rent, a mystifying development since they both brought in
steady incomes.
“Usually, if we were short, we could get help from our family, but it was the holiday season and funds
were really scarce,” Stafford recalls. “We had no idea where our money was going.”
At a financial counseling clinic run by Britepaths, a nonprofit in Fairfax, Virginia, which helps low-
income people near the nation’s capital, Stafford learned she could get free help from a member of
the FPA of the National Capital Area.
That’s how she met Dolores “Didi” Dorsett, a newly minted CFP and a former intelligence officer with
the United States Navy.
With the support of Dorsett and other Britepaths services, Stafford developed a passion for
budgeting, paid down debt and built up an emergency reserve that survived the couple’s 20% to 30%
loss in income after her husband took a different job.
Read more about 2018 Pro Bono Award Runner-up, Didi Dorsett.
