Scholastic Event
14 Winside seniors attended two presentations at the Henry Doorly zoo and Aksarben Aquarium on Friday April 1st. The seniors arrived at the zoo around 900 and toured for a.couple of hours before viewing a North
American Parks video at the IMAX theater. After lunch, they were engaged in an endangered species and North American amphibian
presentation by zoo curator Julie Anderson. After the presentation the group traveled to Schramm State Park and the Aksarben Aquarium south
of Gretna where they toured the upper workings of the aquarium and watched a feeding session of several fish groups. After the tour, Greg Hartel presented a herpentology discussion and allowed the group to
handle and view about a dozen reptiles and amphibians from Nebraska. Mr. Sok and board member Jon Jaeger sponsored the group.

PROM 2016
FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK……. Sarah Remm, PK-12 Principal
Mr. Shoff reflected on an article written by Jon Gordon in the October 2015 newsletter edition that I
feel is a good fit for this time of the school year. This particular article focused on one’s perspective
and attitude about life and work and the effects of changing one’s mindset from a “I have to” to a “I
get to” way of thinking. When we say “I have to do this” and “I have to do that”, negativism may
result. While we can’t always control what life throws at us, the one thing we can control is how we
think about what life presents to us. Changing to an “I get to” mindset can completely change
everything.
Springtime is a very busy time of year in school. The calendar is full of track meets, music contests,
field trips, scholastic contests, the school play, etc. Another important event that takes place is
testing. Our students participate in NeSA, MAP, and ACT testing. I hear both students and adults
comment that “we have to do all of this testing”,which is many times followed by
grumbling. Instead of sending the message we “have to”, why not say we “get to”. Complaining
about and putting down the testing process doesn’t help anyone, most importantly our students. I’ve
talked before how both positive and negative attitudes are contagious. We can do nothing but thrive
when surrounded by positive people and attitudes. On the other hand, negative people and attitudes
can only bring us down.
Testing is a process we get to do. Why wouldn’t we want to see the skills and concepts our students
have learned and mastered throughout the school year? Why wouldn’t we want to showcase our
students’ successes? Why wouldn’t we want to reflect on where our students’ strengths and
challenges lie and then tie those findings into our curriculum revisions and course offerings?
We have no control over the testing expectations, so let’s control what we are able to and change
our perspective about testing. How wonderful that we get to show everyone just how great being a
Winside Wildcat is!
On behalf of the Junior Class Sponsors, Mrs. Wittler and Mrs. Klabenes, we would like to thank everyone
involved with putting together an amazing Arabian Nights Prom for our High School students here at Winside. We appreciate all the time and effort put into organizing this special event.
The Winside High School Junior Class wants to say a huge thank-you to the American Legion and the American Legion Auxiliary, Rod Reed Unit 252 of Winside for donating their china plates for Prom this year
and for future proms. It is very much appreciated to be able to have nice dishes to entertain our juniors, seniors and guests at prom. Thank-you!

Superintendent’s Notes Spring Winside Public Schools will be purchasing ads promoting our school and our support of “The Do Not
Drink and Drive Campaign” on KZEM FM Radio out of Columbus. With Prom and Graduation fast approaching its time to remember what’s important and how one poor decision can last a lifetime. Talk to your children about drinking and driving, it might save a life.
I remind students and parents that a lot of school is missed during the spring months. Please stay up on your child’s progress academically through Power School our student management system. You can also communicate with teachers via email (first initial last [email protected]) example:
The Root of Success I have been reading a lot of Jon Gordon lately. Jon is an author who discusses not only leadership
principles but working together as a team with a focus. He has many great messages for living our lives in
a more positive manner, dealing with negativity, and energy vampires who suck the energy out of doing good things. When I come across some good stuff I try to share it with you, as I think we all need some
direction at times. I know that I do! Maybe this will help.
The Root of Success by Jon Gordon: There once was a tree that produced an abundant supply of fruit. Everyone marveled at its ability to produce a record harvest each year. The owner who sold his fruit at the local market had become one of the wealthiest men in town and he was the envy of all who knew him.
However, as the years passed the owner spent so much of his time counting and selling his fruit that he forgot to nourish
the root. He became so prideful and focused on results that he neglected to see the signs that the tree was dying. Then one day when the owner went to pick fruit from his tree he was shocked to discover that the tree was barren.
"How could this be," he asked? But when he inspected the root he found his answer.
The root had dried up.
He was so focused on the fruit that he neglected the root. He wished there was something he could do but it was too late. It was a lesson he would never forget!
How about you? Do you focus on the numbers, the outcomes and the fruit? Or do you focus on the purpose, people, innovation, culture and root of your success. Always remember the amount of fruit we produce is just an outcome and measurement of how well we are nurturing our root.
If we take care of our root we'll always have an abundant supply of fruit. Ignore the root and say goodbye to the fruit.
What is the root of your success? What do the root and fruit mean to you?
From Jon Gordon; http://www.jongordon.com/positive-tip-root.html
Our root is not just our community and school district it is the people who make up those entities. When we set high expectations for ourselves and our school we are strengthening our roots. I view our school as
part of a lifeline to our community. We are working hard at strengthening the roots so that we all can bear the fruit of our successes long into the future. Thank you to all of you who support our great school!!
