ABOUT THE COLLEGE

St Catherine's College is the newest of the University of Oxford’s 38 colleges that admit both undergraduates andgraduates and it has grown to be the largest with 500 undergraduate and 440 graduate members. The Governing Body of the College consists of the Master and 52 Fellows and meets 10 times a year. The Master is the Head of the College and works in partnership with the Governing Body to develop and maintain the intellectual ethos of the College and to ensure that its distinctive character and aspirations can flourish.

St Catherine’s was founded in 1962 building upon the earlier St Catherine's Society, a Delegacy of Non-Collegiate Students founded in 1868 as part of an expansion of the University so that students would be able to gain an Oxford education without the costs of college membership. During the academic year 2018 - 2019, the College will therefore be celebrating the 150th anniversary of its origins.

The College offers almost all subjects, except Ancient History, Archaeology and Anthropology, Classics, Earth Sciences, Oriental Studies and Theology, and the overall composition of membership is divided equally between arts and sciences. 45% of Junior Members and 30% of the Fellowship are women. The College has an extremely international outlook and is committed to equality and diversity. The College reported a median gender pay gap of zero in 2018. The original buildings (1962-67), widely considered to be the masterpiece of the Danish architect and designer Arne Jacobsen, were among the first five post-war buildings to be listed Grade I. The College’s motto is ‘Nova et Vetera’ and it prides itself on maintaining the best features of the Oxford collegiate tradition with a friendly and relaxed atmosphere, openness to creativity and innovation. The alumni and Fellows of the College have included 10 Nobel Prize winners. In 2018 the College was ranked third in the Norrington Table (which compares by college the academic achievement of undergraduates in Final Examinations).

PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

It is likely that the person appointed will have a good academic reputation, but not necessarily have held a University appointment. The office of Master is a full-time appointment requiring a considerable commitment in time and energy. The Governing Body looks to the Master to provide overall leadership in all the academic and other affairs of the College, but the Master is required to be a Chair, working in close partnership with the Governing Body and College Officers, rather than a Chief Executive in a more corporate structure.

It is imperative that the Master should develop a thorough understanding of and commitment to the working structures of the Collegiate University and be disposed to put the interests of the College above personal reputation or advancement.

The successful candidate will need the warmth and charisma to engage with every aspect of the College community as well as the acumen to guide the College successfully through academic, financial and strategic challenges, and to be open and transparent in communicating the position and values of the College. The role requires a capacity for both strategic vision and attention to detail, balancing the ability to think through the long-term consequences of decisions with the need to take immediate action when appropriate.

TERMS AND CONDITIONS

The College will appoint the Master under, and subject to, the College Statutes. The Statutes currently provide that the Master will be expected to retire by the thirty-first day of July next following the 67th

anniversary of their birth. However, the Governing Body has the power under the Statutes to renew the Master in office for a period or periods not exceeding three years after this date.

Subject to the above, the Governing Body of the College intends to appoint the Master in the first instance for a fixed term of seven years, renewable for a further period or periods of five years. The Governing Body believes that this approach best serves the interests of the College in ensuring that it has the benefit of fresh ideas, different approaches, and a variety of experience at its most senior level of leadership.

The Master shall, so far as possible, give to the Governing Body a minimum of twelve months' notice, but preferably four terms' notice, of their intention to relinquish office prior to retirement or to expiry of the ongoing fixed term.

The salary and benefits of the Master are reviewed annually by the College’s Remuneration Committee, which is chaired by an Alumnus. The salary is currently £98,547 per annum and will be inflated by the annual percentage increases payable to academic staff. The appointment will be pensionable under the Universities Superannuation Scheme.

The Master will be entitled to Common Table and a research allowance, if the Master is research active. The College will, of course, welcome the Master's spouse or partner (if any), but has no expectations of them with regard to any aspect of support of the Master’s duties.

The Master does not have an automatic right to sabbatical leave, but may apply to the Governing Body for leave to pursue a project that would further the interests of the College.
