IntroductionWith aging of our population, we are seeing a tidal wave of older persons in our hospitals,

clinics and nursing homes. The purpose of our conference is to provide an evidence-based

approach to help clinicians take exceptional care of these often frail individuals.

Nearly 40 state-of-the-art sessions taught by top

experts. Some highlights include:

� A Symposium on Geriatric Neurology and Psychiatry, including

Assessment of Capacity/Decision Making, Anxiety and Depression, the

Difficult Patient, Non-Pharmacologic Treatment of Dementia, and

Delirium (by Sharon Inouye, MD, MPH)

� Breakout Sessions allowing participants to pose specific clinical

management questions to experts in geriatric GI, Pain Medicine,

Dermatology, and Radiology

� Updates in Geriatric Pharmacology including how to practically

implement evolving standards such as the Beers criteria

� Talks on Geriatric Cardiology by the ACC’s Chair of Geriatrics

� State-of-the-Art Lectures on the common geriatric syndromes including

HELP ConferenceM a r c h 2 7 – 2 8 , 2 0 1 4HELP

This two-day international conference is designed to educate Hospital Elder Life Program(HELP) teams regarding strategies for delirium prevention, using HELP to improvehospital-wide care of the elderly, and creating a climate of change. Expert clinicians andexperienced members of the HELP sites will share evidenced-based information andclinical insights on selected topics regarding the influence of HELP, delirium updates, andthe larger policy implications of care for the elderly. Updates on collaborative papers,expansion of the program and innovative site projects will also be presented.

Learning Objectives

At the end of this course, participants should be able to:

• Understand how delirium impacts older adults in the hospital

• Describe how to successfully train, monitor, and retain HELP volunteers

• Recognize how to present the business case of HELP to hospital administration

• Describe the importance of mobilizing older adults in the hospital

• Appreciate new areas of the HELP program, including updates to the HELP website
